The Endless Night: A Valentine to Film Noir

After many long hours, this is my tribute to my favorite genre, to the dark shadows and the profound despair of the soul. I tried to include as many as I could get my hands on, though there are obviously some that I overlooked, some accidently (the absence of "The Sweet Smell of Success" and "White Heat" are the most obvious and shameful), some purposefully (save Sam Fuller's 1964 pulp masterpiece "The Naked Kiss," I decided to stay strictly within the 18-year period between 1940 and 1958, so absolutely no neo-noirs like "Chinatown", and even more importantly, absolutely no colors). Song: "Angel" by Massive Attack This video is dedicated to two awesome women: The first is my friend Cecilia Ossenbeck, my partner in crime in the adventures of cinema. The second is to noir icon Ann Savage, who died yesterday. If you like this, check out Eddie Muller's original short film: www.youtube.com And now, the noirs: THE LETTER (1940, William Wyler. This public domain movie is a classic example of film noir and one of my favorite movies. In it, a guy is poisoned by radiation poisoning put in his drink, and he knows he is going to die, but in with his remaining time he dedicates himself to discovering who killed him, and why. Quicksand (1950) Mickey Rooney and Peter Lorre Film Noir Full Movie

Quicksand (1950) is a United Artists film noir starring Mickey Rooney and Peter Lorre in a story about a garage mechanic's descent into crime. The film has been described as "film noir in a teacup... a pretty nifty little picture" in which Rooney "cast himself against his Andy Hardy goody goody image. Young auto mechanic Dan Brady (Mickey Rooney) takes $20 from a cash register at work to go on a date with blonde femme fatale Vera Novak (Jeanne Cagney). Brady intends to put the money back before it is missed, but the garage's bookkeeper shows up earlier than scheduled. As Brady scrambles to cover evidence of his petty theft, he fast finds himself drawn into an ever worsening "quicksand" of crime, each of his misdeeds more serious than the last. His descent is sped along by his heartless and morally lacking boss Oren Mackay (Art Smith), and the seedy owner of a pinball arcade on Santa Monica Pier, Nick Dramoshag (Peter Lorre). Brady and Vera split when Vera purchases a mink coat with money Brady has stolen. Brady's still-loyal but unappreciated former girlfriend Helen (Barbara Bates) then reenters the scene and tries to woo him back. Later fleeing what he believes will be a murder charge, Brady carjacks a sedan which happens to be driven by a sympathetic lawyer (Taylor Holmes). By movie's end Brady is back with his faithful girlfriend, who promises to wait for him while he spends the next few years of his life in prison. Cast includes Jimmie Dodd and Minerva Urecal. Follow John Doe an author from 1940s America and have an insight into his mind as he tries to create a best selling novel, however from the start as he tells us his name we know there is something wrong. This was my first ever short film, I knew from the start I wasn't going to be 100% pleased with the final edit, however I can learn from all my mistakes and keep everything in mind for my next short film, and hopefully I can get better. Jealousy: Film Noir Movie about Marriage (1954)

DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Jealousy is a secondary emotion and typically refers to the negative thoughts and feelings of insecurity, fear, and anxiety over an anticipated loss of something that the person values, particularly in reference to a human connection. Jealousy often consists of a combination of presenting emotions such as anger, sadness, resentment and disgust. It is not to be confused with envy. Jealousy is a familiar experience in human relationships. It has been observed in infants five months and older. Some claim that jealousy is seen in every culture; however, others claim jealousy is a culture-specific phenomenon. Jealousy is often reinforced as a series of particularly strong emotions and constructed as a universal human experience; it has been a theme of many artistic works that seek to privilege monogamous discourses. Psychologists have proposed several models of the processes underlying jealousy and have identified factors that result in jealousy. Sociologists have demonstrated that cultural beliefs and values play an important role in determining what triggers jealousy and what constitutes socially acceptable expressions of jealousy. Biologists have identified factors that may unconsciously influence the expression of jealousy. Artists have explored the theme of jealousy in photographs, paintings, movies, songs, plays, poems, and books. Theologians have offered religious views of jealousy based on the scriptures of their respective faiths ...

Christmas Special! GUILT IS MY SHADOW (1950) Full Movie

This British film noir, released in March 1950, was directed by Roy Kellino for the Associated British Picture Corporation. Rather strangely it has since slipped into complete obscurity and has never been shown on tv in the UK. Possibly one of the reasons for this was the lack of any top star names, but Patrick Holt, Peter Reynolds and Elizabeth Sellars turn in good performances in a story that holds the viewers' interest throughout the film's running time. Devon farmer Kit (Patrick Holt) receives an unexpected visit from his nephew Jamie (Peter Reynolds), on the run from police following a bank robbery. But events take an even more sinister direction when Jamie's wife (Elizabeth Sellars) comes looking for him. "Guilt is my shadow" was originally protected by the Copyright Acts of 1911 and 1956 but did not come under the transitional arrangements of the 1988 Act. Copyright in the UK expired in 2000 and the film is presented here for research purposes only.
