Flashover Or Backdraft Occurs While Crews Are Inside A Working House Fire In New Chicago
Crews were dispatched to a reported house fire at 402 Madison In New Chicago on 02-17-12, On arrival smoke was showing and a working fire was declared. Crews quickly stretched lines into the house to knock the fire down and a hole was cut in the roof of the living room/entrance. Shortly after the hole was cut there was a violent explosion that blew an officers helmet off his head and blew the leaves in the lawn. We are unsure what the explosion was. There were three members in the structure when this happened and all were ok. One other member suffered an asthma attack while fighting the fire and was treated on the scene. The Lake County Fire Investigators Team was requested to the scene to assist with cause and origin.

Firefighters Nearly Trapped By A Flashover In Gary Indiana
Crews were dispatched to a reported still alarm in the 2300 block of Massachusetts, on arrival Battalion 4 advised of a working fire in a 2 story dwelling at the corner of 24th and Massachusetts. Engine 12 brought in the hydrant and Truck 4 started opening the building. As firefighters made entry the interior flashed and they made it out by the skin on their behinds. An aggressive attack was made and the roof was opened. Nobody was hurt at the fire scene. Excellent job and everyone went home. Much love to GFD

"It may have looked like an out-of-this-world blast, but authorities say a mysterious glow that lit up the early-morning sky in Bridgewater today was no cause for alarm. Some county and Bridgewater officials believe that transformer fires caused by heavy rain may have played a part in the freakish light show, although they had no definitive answers about the source of the lights. Shortly after midnight, several Bridgewater residents reported seeing a pulsating glow in the distance that changed colors, similar to the aurora borealis. They said the lights appeared to come from the northern part of the township. "The sky lit up like pure daylight," said 87-year-old Joseph Wing, who lives on Foothill Road. "This was unlike anything I've ever seen." Wing said he first wondered if an explosion was responsible, but he didn't hear a blast or feel an impact that matched the intensity of the lights. He said the glow disappeared around 12:30 am It was followed by reports of power outages in the township. "On Facebook there were a lot a people saying, 'Oh maybe it was aliens, but I obviously knew that wasn't the most realistic option," Dragon said. Flashover occurs when heat generated by a fire can no longer be absorbed by ceilings, walls, and room contents. Heat begins to radiate back toward the room, raising the temperature of unburned gases, room contents, walls and flooring. At approximately 750 degrees the entire room ignites creating an inferno. Firefighters wear protective clothing, referred to as turn-out gear, to protect themselves. However, a flashover creates such extreme temperatures that turn-out gear cannot provide adequate protection. A firefighter trapped in a flashover has only 2 seconds to escape the harsh conditions before being overcome. This represents only 5 feet of movement once the flashover occurs.

Lodi NJ Firefighters responded to 175 St Joseph Blvd on 6-4-09. They encountered very heavy fire upon arrival. During the final phases of the knock down. Firefighters from Hasbrouck Heights were opening the roof when a light to moderate smoke condition turned into the attic flashing over. FLASHOVER CAUGHT ON TAPE AT A HOUSE FIRE
The Ogden Dunes FD was dispatched to a reported attached garage on fire in a 1 story 25x75 house, on arrival a fully involved garage with extension to the house was reported. A 1st alarm was struck at the point, Engine 1511 stretched a 3 inch ground monitor and used foam for the fire attack. Just before crews were going to make an interior attack there was a flashover that blew windows out and engulfed every room in the house. It was later dtermined the house was under rehab, there were two workers in the house that made it out safe. Fire investigators from Porter County FIST Team were on scene working. Nobody was injured at the fire scene

Flashover At A Fully Involved House Fire, 2nd In One Night. Gary Indiana
Crews were dispatched to a reported house fire at 48th and Vermont, on arrival GFD found a house with fire blowing through the roof of a 25x40 frame single family dwelling. After knocking the fire down with a deck gun crews made an interior attack with multiple hand lines. It took some time to bring the fire under control and one firefighter suffered minor burns. Fire investigators were called to the scene.
