I somehow had my spotting scope adjusted wrong and didn't notice how blurry it was. Oops! Earlier in the week I zeroed my scope at 100 and 200 yards with my new loads for the Hornady flex-tip bullets. I was happy to see that they didn't shoot bad at all, actually they did very well. 1 15/16 inches at 300 yards is .6moa; that's a 1/16 larger than my loads for the Hornady A-Max at that distance.

It was rainy out so I didn't take my deer picture out to shoot, instead I shot some steel. I need to make a insert for that hole just in case; luckily I'm not good enough with that scope to get it through the hole yet.. Tomorrow I will try with the 30-06, I am rethinking on which bullets I will be shooting with the 30-30. I think I'll be using the Hornady flex tip bullets so I can crimp them in the cannelure. I dropped that cartridge and the bullet sunk right to the powder.

Taking a few shots from my Marlin 1895M lever action. has a little kick. Trying out some of Hornady's FTX Bullets with a flex tip that allows spitzer type bullets to be loaded into a tube magazine. For this quick try out they didn't do too bad. The previous owners had the rifle sighted at 100yards. So far the best place I have set up at home is 75 yards. Farthest clear line of sight to my bullet catch right now... Our backhoe will soon remedy that.... First put some flat points through it. Frankly the recoil at bench rest caught me off guard and I botched those shots as you see. Looks on target though! Great brass for reloads too.

This little round does everything it is supposed to do and does a great job at it. The expansion was very consistent between to two shots fired, and over penetration is hardly a factor with these rounds. Weight retention was 100%

Shooting an old creatine jug with maybe 2/5 of the creatine powder left that I mixed with water. Shot it with a Hornday Leverevolution 325 Grain FTX (Flex Tip Expanding), producing 2050 FPS and 3100 Ft Lbs at the muzzle. Rifle being used is a Marlin 1895 Cowboy with a 26 inch barel, Hornady tests the round with a Marlin 1895 with a 24 inch barrel. Not to be gruesome, but in my own personal opinion this is probably the closest to what would happen if had to shot another human in the head, but since never having had to do that, I could be dead wrong, no pun intended...hahaha.

This is some close range bowling pin shooting with my ruger redhawk 44 mag. I am testing Hornady's relatively new FTX flex tip ammo. This flex tip stuff looks absolutely wicked when viewed from the wrong end of this 44.(looks like 6 ballistic missiles in the cylinder). I have yet to hot-nick a deer with this ammo.

Federal Hydra-Shok is an older HP design from the mid 90's which was a pioneer of the time. Using a center post HP design it was less likely to become plugged with heavy clothing, but since may be eclipsed by more effective HP's that expand more reliably than this older bullet design. The HST of Federal's own design for example, is an excellent round in 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP with perfect expansion and penetration abilities. Why they have not introduced a .380 ACP HST is beyond me. I think the Hydra-Shok in .380 is just a notch above an FMJ in my testing. I think velocity is the key in this bullet's unpredictable expansion. Overall a 4/10 rating in my book. The Golden Saber from Remington is an older HP design that is non-bonded. It features a lead core and spiral programmed brass jacket. In my jug testing I had very poor results without any expansion when shot through denim. Without denim I did get expansion but not 100% and on expanded rounds there were jacket core separation issues. Muzzle velocity was possibly the culprit in unreliable expansion, but bullet construction also plays a role. The most offensive thing I saw was one of the rounds took 5 PRIMER strikes before it went off! All solid strikes on the primer Overall rank 2/10 primarily due to expected expansion could be expected in light clothing and heavy weight and penetration of the round. The famed critical defense line from hornady has received a lot of attention in the media and overall I have had good results with the 9mm and 380 loadings so I decided to test some with the camera rolling and you guessed it epic fail. Not sure why it was pretty cold, around 28 degrees and the rounds had been chambered a few times since they had been carried ccw style. I'm not sure it that was the problem or just the perfect storm scenario, but I fired two; one on camera and one through the lcp off camera with piss poor performance. I reshot again with an unchambered round and a warmer day about 55 degrees, and got more similar results: good expansion and adequate penetration. So the test reassured me of what I have read and seen, if you are doing less than 1000ft/sec it's likely you will have unreliable expansion. I love the hornady company and shoot and use alot of their products but i have been more impressed with other 380 loads, death and taxes are absolutes right.

Velocity coming out of the small 2.75 inch barrel of the S&W Bodyguard .380 is consistently in the 1130 fps range, AWSOME! This is the first round I have tested in .380 that actually meets or exceeds the 1000 fps mark. On the down side I did have jacket and core separation with all expanded rounds and one that did not expand. I talked with Tim from Buffalo Bore and he stated they are currently using Sierra HPS and will load Gold Dots again when available, which would make this a strait 10/10 for me. I told him if they could work out an agreement with Winchester to load the PDX-1 at 95 grains and get it coming out at 1050-1100 fps it would hands down be the best defense .380 loading in my option. The recoil on this round is very manageable; only slightly more web of the hand impact over standard rounds, much less than the Magtech Guardian Gold +P load, which was near painful to shoot. I was shocked to see the high velocity on the chrony based on the felt recoil. Excellent load in my top 3 loads for daily .380 carry with the Corbon DPX, and Winchester PDX-1.

Simple penetration and expansion test of the Hornady .40 165 gr FTXhollowpoint, using a diluted form of SIM-TEST Ballistic Testing Media. This format is comparable to ballistic gel, and includes four layers of denim. Video includes brief overview of the cartridge, recoil shots, and one shot test. Post-shot evaluation shows bullet path through the block, average diameter, and retained weight. Basic ballistic test for the relatively new but popular Hornady Critical Defense FTX in 9mm. This was tested in gallon jugs filled with wet newspaper, 4 layers of denim over the first jug. This is most definitely a light-recoiling, low-velocity cartridge when compared to the greatest majority of self-defense loads for law-abiding concealed carry. It could also be a good choice for those concerned about overpenetration. NOTE: As of late 2009/early 2010 here have been sporadic instances reported with hard primers in the 9mm Critical Defense, and also the .380 version. From what I can discern through various forum posts, this has been reported to Hornady.
