Del recalls playing this song almost every performance when he was the guitarist and lead singer with Bill Monroe's Band in 1963. Del was originally hired by Monroe as a banjo player. In the spring of "64 Grisman met Jerry Garcia at a Bill Monroe show at Sunset Park in West Grove, PA. Later in '64 Del left Monroe and Peter Rowan was Del's replacement as a Bluegrass Boy. By 1966 Grisman had befriended Rowan & McCoury and began picking together. Grisman & McCoury recorded "Early Dawg" in 1966. By '67 McCoury formed his own band, the Dixie Pals and Rowan & Grisman went on to form Earth Opera.
8/13/04 Railroad Earth performs the Todd Sheaffer penned "Mourning Flies". The Hill Hollar Stage;, Floydfest 3. Blue Ridge Pkwy., VA. Todd wrote this song for his girlfriend when her Mother passed away. This song appears on the Sugar Hill 2004 release "The Good Life"
