Flugelhorn Jazz with Clark Terry
Clark Terry was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended Vashon High School there and began his professional career in the early 1940s by playing in local clubs before joining a Navy band during World War II. Afterwards, he played with Charlie Barnet (1947), Count Basie (1948 to 1951), Duke Ellington (1951 to 1959), and Quincy Jones (1960). He also performed and recorded regularly both as a leader and sideman. In all, his career in jazz spans more than sixty years.

Hugh Masekela: King of the Flugelhorn (HD)
Hugh Masekela is one of the most recognized, beloved figures in music. His success gave mainstream media attention to "township jazz," inspired several generations of South African musicians, and was a defining influence in shaping our perception of South African music. In this video interview, he reflects on his life and work, and what motivates him now. The video captures footage of his recent concert for SFJazz at the Palace of Fine Arts, whose assistance was invaluable in creating the video. Also included is footage from several earlier concerts, and an audio interview with 84-year-old Harry Belafonte, a father-figure in Masekela's life, and also one of Masekela's current band members, drummer Lee-Roy Sauls. Let's look a little more at brass instruments with valves and how they work. This is a tuba, but as we know, it could just as well be a trumpet, or a euphonium, or a French horn, or a flugelhorn; they all work on the same principles. Let's look today at the logic behind the system of fingerings. If you think about it, there are only two possible states for a valve: either depressed or not. A lot like a human, I guess. So if each of the three valves has two different possibilities - and we have two times two times two - which gives us eight possibilities. The highest note we could play is by not depressing any valve. And a little lower is pressing the baby; a little lower is pressing the daddy, and a little lower is pressing the granddaddy. Now, let's think about this from the bottom up: If we press everything, then we get the lowest note we could. And a little higher, subtracting the baby, subtracting the daddy, subtracting the granddaddy. So this is just a mirror image of itself. And these two notes, of course, produce - again, aside from tuning issues that don't concern us here - the same note. Now, think about the following: Every single note that a tuba or a trumpet or a flugelhorn or a French horn or a euphonium ever plays, they play it with one of these eight possibilities. Flugelhorn and Yamaha Silent Brass
After nearly 10 years, I finally bought again a musical instrument (Flugelhorn). Since it would be probably the last day in my apartment in Japan if I played my instrument, I had to buy some special mute system, naturally this is an invention by a Japanese company (Yamaha: Silent Brass ST5: Personal Studio), since I think in most countries of the world people just play when and where they like. I just tried the basic functions today, but it is quite fun, because there are so many different sounds, you can add. Additionally, you can also create your own sound combinations. Here are just a few of the many already provided sounds. So, this is no real music yet, just presenting the effects ;) Found it quite interesting, especially the last one: - Normal tone with Echo - Delay Effect - Chorus Effect - Filter Effect (Only very short. My computer did not want to record that of whatever reason.
