Many people have reported sensitivity to Fluorescent Bulbs, and now with the compact version (CFL) set to take over in 2010 - was it really well planned? In this video we're going to demonstrate fluorescence thermochromism. Simply dissolve a small amount of copper iodide into pyridine to form a clear yellow solution of trispyridine copper iodide. Normally this does not fluoresce but if cooled to liquid nitrogen temperatures it will fluoresce a strong yellow color. To understand why this happens one must first understand a little about fluorescence. The ultraviolet light is absorbed by the molecule and excites electrons in it to higher energy levels. Normally the molecule bumps into other molecules and looses this energy, dropping the electrons back into their ground levels. In fluorescent materials though, the electrons release their energy first as fluorescent light before they loose their energy through collisions. In trispyridine copper iodide, the molecules vibrate and collide too much at room temperature and thus destroy any chance of fluorescence, so the substance looks non-fluorescent. But if cooled low enough, the molecules vibrate less and thus the electrons have more opportunity to emit light before a collision. Now moving on, if a few drops of the trispyrdine copper iodide solution is put on a sheet of filter paper and allowed to dry. it looses a pyridine molecule to become bispyridine copper iodide. This substance is more stable and will fluoresce at room temperature. But cooling will not improve the fluorescence noticeably since the substance is already stable enough to resist collisional deactivation. Warming <b>...</b>

"boomerman2004" has made a great instructable on how to do this at s821.photobucket.com i basically did the same thing and took cheap camera circuits and gutted them, but used 3.6 cell phone and cordless phone batteries as inputs. one of them is actually one of the battery cells that make up a laptop battery. each put out around 4v at good current. the problem is leaving the lights on for too long will burn out the transformer. i added a 25 ohm rheo on the green box so i can leave it on for however long i want, just at a low brightness. i wasnt satisfied with the light a single AA puts out, and i like the rechargeability of these battery packs. they charge super fast and will last like almost forever in these circuits. i will definitely be using these next time the power goes out. room to room portability is what makes it ideal. u could also create an inverter for a car battery that will run much bigger fluoros during outages. the pope is a faggot and im going to spinkick that fool in his big ass head ay seriously tho if u like the pope u need to sit on a pinecone and twirl true story

I am in the process of upgrading the lighting in my shop. It currently has a number of 4-lamp and 2-lamp T12 4-foot fluorescent fixtures. The best solution is to replace the ballast in each of these fixtures with high-efficiency electronic ballast ($15), and replace the lamps with T8 high-CRI bulbs. This will save energy, and greatly improve the quality of the light. LEDs and T5 fluorescent are MUCH more expensive to install, and their energy savings are not nearly enough to justify the cost. Remember that running a T8 with an electronic ballast will provide more light than it's nominal rating, which is for magnetic ballasts. T5 are always rated for electronic ballasts, so it is not a fair comparison. For new fixtures in my shop, the cheapest/best solution is to buy $10 "shop lights" and replace the ballast. The total fixture cost is $25, and efficiency is 96 lumens/watt for a total output of almost 6000 lumens. It can't be beat! Commercially-available T8 fixtures with electronic ballasts are more expensive, and the quality of the ballast is suspect.
