PAL-V Flying Car - Maiden Flight

This week the Dutch company PAL-V announced the first flights of its prototype "flying car". This unique vehicle is called the PAL-V One, or the 'Personal Air and Land Vehicle', and It marks the start of a new era. On the ground the vehicle drives like a sports car. Within minutes its rotor is unfolded and its tail is extended: then it is ready to take off thanks to the advanced gyrocopter technology. With these successful test results it is proven that it is not only possible to build a flying car but also that it can be done within existing international rules for both flying and driving. Having passed this important milestone the company is now inviting investors to join them in creating the future. The next step will be the design of the first commercial production model of the PAL-V, and first deliveries are expected in 2014. For 100 years people have dreamed of a flying car, and many attempts have been made to realize this dream, but now it has truly become a reality. www.PAL-V.com

Terrafugia - Flying Car

Woburn, MA June 3, 2009: Terrafugia, Inc. has successfully completed the flight testing program designed for its Transition Roadable Aircraft Proof of Concept. Having been dubbed The Flying Car, the Transition completed its historic first flight on March 5, 2009 with 27 additional flights completed over the next several weeks. The successful completion of flight-testing with the Proof of Concept concludes the first stage of a four stage process to bring the Transition into production. Work is underway on Stage 2, the Beta Prototype. First delivery is expected in 2011. The Proof of Concept vehicle is the first and only Transition to be built thus far. It has now achieved its goals by demonstrating driving, flying, and automated transformation between the two in one integrated aircraft. The flights conducted a plan set specifically for the Transition: characteristics such as handling, performance, and take-off and landing, stability and stall were evaluated. B-Roll footage is available of representative flights. The flight-testing program demonstrated the safety of the vehicle in the air while identifying modifications that will be incorporated into the next Transition model to be built, the Beta Prototype. Test Pilot Colonel (Retired) Phil Meteer had a positive review of flying the POC: I would like to keep flying this Proof of Concept vehicle, but it makes sense to move on to the Beta Prototype. Categorized as a Light Sport Aircraft, the Transition requires a Sport Pilot ...

Flying Cars: Our Traffic-Avoiding Fantasy Gets Closer to Reality

From Inspector Gadget to Back to the Future, we've imagined cars that can help us circumvent traffic. And now, we may be getting closer; two different companies have unveiled—yep—flying cars. In Holland, the new Personal Air and Land Vehicle claims to fly for distances of over 300 miles. And Massachusetts-based company Terrafugia Inc. is set to roll out it's own version—the Transition—at this week's New York Auto Show. The Transition, which has reportedly taken its first flight and could be available later this year, rose 1400 feet in the air for eight minutes. But it also will reportedly cost $279000—not exactly a consumer-friendly price just yet. Both vehicles fly at speeds over 100 miles per hour and require a limited flight license. But unfortunately you won't be able to zip out of that traffic jam without a significant runway. We'll wait for them to get cheaper, and in the meantime, guys—can you make them run on banana peels and High Life?

Gyrocopter flying car

A Dutch company is launching a vehicle which can be driven on land, or flown in the air. The Personal Air and Land Vehicle (PAL-V) can be configured as a gyrocopter, requiring a 165m (540 ft) runway to take-off, or as a three wheeled car. PAL-V chief executive Robert Dingemanse said that private individuals had expressed an interest in the machine, but he was also hoping that military and emergency services could find a use for it. Several test flights have been successfully conducted and the company is now looking for investors to take the PAL-V through the final development stage.
Flying Cars are Here

www.lockergnome.com - The dream of flying cars has long been a staple in the world of geekery, emphasized in the 1980s by the Back to the Future series, and solidified as a dream through countless prototypes and inventive hopefuls. Unfortunately, that dream has yet to become a reality. Or maybe it's fortunate when you think about how a lot of drivers can't seem to handle driving on the ground, let alone adding the dimension of up and down to the equation. Bo and Luke Duke sort of drove a car that could fly all the way back in the late '70s and early '80s, but I'm not sure that's exactly what we had in mind when looking toward a future of flying cars. Flying Car Makes Successful Maiden Flight The Dutch company PAL-V Europe NV has successfully concluded test flights of its flying car, PAL-V (Personal Air and Land Vehicle). During the past two weeks, several test flights were conducted at the Gilze Rijen Airport (The Netherlands). The patented vehicle flies in the air like a gyrocopter with lift generated by an auto-rotating rotor and forward speed produced by a foldable push propeller on the back. On the road it drives like a sports car. No new infrastructure is required because it uses existing roads and airstrips. Dutch Innovation A team of top engineers has been working on the first prototypes since finalization of the design concept in 2008. Renowned institutes such as the Dutch National Aerospace Laboratory and Delft University have also been involved in the development. The driving prototype was fully tested in 2009 and now the flying-driving prototype has made its first flights. The PAL-V complies with existing regulations in all major markets, which means that the vehicle is allowed both in road traffic and in the air. Robert Dingemanse, CEO and co-founder of PAL-V commented: "We are very proud to announce this successful maiden flight of the PAL-V and we now invite investors to create the future with us. We know there is a lot of interest for the PAL-V. Where's My Flying Car?

A practical flying car with everyman usability has so far eluded the public, but we may have already been introduced to a design that could lead to a breakthrough. Some of the major challenges of producing a point-to-point simple and safe to operate vehicle are technological in nature. Autonomous navigation (enter the destination, press a button, and allow the vehicle to navigate, communicate with, and autonomously avoid other aircraft) may be one key to safely organizing masses of flying vehicles in the same airspace. And as society progresses, the gap between the dream and reality may be shrinking.

euronews hi-tech - Driven to fly: cars that can take-off

www.euronews.com This rather unusual looking car can reach speeds of up to 180 kilometres an hour but that is not what makes it special. All is revealed when it unfurls it propellors; this car can also fly. The Personal Air and Land Vehicle or PAL-V is a gyrocopter that can both fly and is allowed on the road. So what do you need to drive this machine? Robert Dingemanse, CEO and founder of Dutch company PAL-V, said: "A normal drivers licence. And for flying a personal or private pilot's licence and that's something you get in around 20 to 30 hours worth of lessons. So it's pretty easy in a gyrocopter. It's a gyrocopter and that's the easiest way of flying, also the safest way of flying." If the PAL-V sounds like the answer to the traffic jam, there is a hitch. It requires 165 metres of runway to take-off, 30 metres to land and can only be flown from an airport. It is expected to retail for somewhere between 250000 and 300000 euros. But the PAL-V is not the only flying car - or driving plane if you prefer - coming on to the market. The US-based firm Terrafugia have just carried out successful tests on their own street-legal plane called the Transition. Terrafugia say around 100 orders have already been placed for the car, which will cost roughly the same as its European cousin. Terrafugia Transition fulfils flying car fantasies

nma.tv Terrafugia, an aeronautics company based in Massachusetts, will unveil a flying car named "Transition" at the 2012 New York International Auto Show. The compact vehicle accommodates a driver and one passenger. It reached an altitude of 1400 feet during a recent test flight and has a top airspeed of about 115 miles per hour. Its wings fold down when on land, allowing it to drive on standard roads just like any other car. It even runs on ordinary gasoline. It won't win any races, though. The vehicle maxes out at 70 miles per hour on the ground. Will the transition catch on? Price is certainly a barrier at $279000. One hundred fat-pocketed people have already shelled out a $10000 down payment. Promised in sci-fi shows and movies of the past, people have long expected flying cars to be part of their everyday lives at some point in the future. Personal flying saucers are standard issue in the Jetsons cartoon, which takes place in the still well-off year of 2062. The flying cars of Back to the Future Part II are a little more within reach. Doc Brown and Marty McFly cruise the skyways in 2015, just three years from now.
