Flywheel Electrical Energy Storage
Although this little homemade device is not actually useful for much, it does demonstrate the concept of energy storage by flywheel. I made it from a brushless DC cooling fan motor. The motor is rated for 12 volts but I have pushed it to 18 without electrical or mechanical failure. At 18 volts the flywheel speeds up to scary high speeds. I have no equipment to measure the speeds, but in theory the video plus audio should be enough to make an accurate estimate. At times, the flywheel appears to be spinning much slower than it actually is, but that is caused by the stroboscopic effect. In reality, it spins too fast to perceive. I tapped into the same coils that accelerate the flywheel and used them for generating power, which is why the voltage is too high to use on LEDs during spin up. Once I disconnect the 12 volt supply, the coils are no longer energized externally and the voltage drops to that which is produce by the spinning flywheel. The magnetic coupling is weak so I can only draw low currents. Industrial units exist in applications where short duration, high output, uninterruptable power is needed or when rapid charge and discharge is needed. They usually suspend the flywheel by magnetic levitation. One example of an ideal application is temporary emergency backup power for hospitals. The hospital's ICE driven generator takes a few seconds to start, and so the flywheel bridges the gap between power loss and the generator's online state. How did I balance the <b>...</b>
Flywheel Hybrid Technology
Torotrak is a UK-based company that's developing a technology called a flywheel hybrid. Instead of using a big, heavy battery to store energy, the Torotrak system uses a spinning flywheel. It's simple and lightweight compared to traditional electric hybrids, and it's even going to be used in Formula One race cars. There's no word yet if any automakers are signing up, but if it starts winning races you can bet they'll be all over it.

A common problem with the replacement flywheel's on LLV's has been the ring gear welded off center to the plate. If this happens the starter teeth will most likely grind with the new flywheel. If you don't want to replace the flywheel a second time, check it before you install it. Here's how.

Home made wood splitter, The inspiration came from You tube video's, What you see is a heavy wheel with a splitting maul welded to the face of the wheel, a small electric motor powers the wheel, you can tell that the operation is quiet. After failing to create a more compact Auto-Flywheel system, I tried to make a simpler one. (I know it still looks complex, but there are much fewer moving parts than before.) Power input comes from the treadmill through the front wheels, which spins a variable geometry flywheel. The flywheel shaft sends power to the gearbox and governs the gear position. The perpendicular wheel at the back is connected to the output shaft. The gear box has 3 speeds of gears plus a neutral.

How to replace a sheared flywheel key on a Briggs & Stratton walk behind lawn mower
**Always follow the instructions in your repair manual when doing repair or maintenance work on Outdoor Power Equipment. Manuals can be found at the manufacturers website.** This video shows how to replace the flywheel key on a Briggs & Stratton walk behind lawn mower. The engine is a Briggs & Stratton single cylinder, 650 series, L-Head engine. The procedure is similar on other brands of engines. Sheared flywheel keys are a common problem on lawn mowers that have the cutting blade connected directly to the crankshaft. The problem happens when the cutting blade hits an object of large mass. This impact usually causes the engine to stop turning. The sudden stopping of the engine causes the rotational energy in the rotating flywheel to be transferred to the flywheel key and the key shears. The flywheel key is designed to shear when this occurs to prevent the energy in the flywheel from being transferred to the crankshaft and causing serious damage. The method I used to loosen the flywheel from the crankshaft is not recommended by the manufacturer, but it works if you know how to do it. You need to be careful, because using the pry bar can damage the crankcase and hitting the crankshaft with a hammer can also cause damage. My first choice would be to use a flywheel puller, but the holes on this flywheel, used to attach the puller, were not threaded, so using a puller was not an option. Also, most people don't have the specialized tools recommended by the manufacturer. Tools <b>...</b>
