Burlon Craig on Folkways, face jugs and folk pots Part 1 of 2

Burlon B. Craig (ca. 1914-2002) was born in Lincoln County, North Carolina and learned to make pottery as a teenager. When Craig returned from service in the Navy following World War II he purchased the Reinhardt farm and pottery complex in Vale, North Carolina. The pottery operation included a groundhog kiln and fully equipped shop. While Craig worked full time at a local furniture factory, he also made pottery and for the next 25 years single handedly kept the pottery making traditions of the Catawba Valley alive. Americas' Bicentennial celebration increased interest in traditional crafts and Craig's work began to be discovered by academics and folk art collectors. His pottery was featured in several publications and in 1981 examples of his work were added to the Smithsonian Institution collection. In 1984 he received the National Endowment for the Arts' National Heritage Fellowship. Craig continued to live and work in Vale until his death in 2002. His annual pottery sales, known as "kiln openings" were attended by hundreds of collectors. Burlon was my great uncle.

Hazel and Alice - Folkways Records - Recorded 1967

This was recorded in 1967 and released, very hastily, in 1973 when other record labels paid interest. Alice Gerrard is listed as Alice Foster, Alice Fister and Alice Goster all on one album. They were good at recording history and lacking in the proofreading department. But, there were no spell checks back then. Please Mommy Please. Eddy Arnold.

Smithsonian Folkways Presents: The Mickey Hart Collection

On October 11, 2011, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings will release the 'Mickey Hart Collection' to preserve and further the Grateful Dead percussionist's endeavor to cross borders and expand musical horizons. Smithsonian Folkways will make many of Mickey Hart's music projects available digitally (stream and download) for the first time while keeping physical versions in print as on-demand CDs. The Mickey Hart Collection begins with 25 albums drawn from 'The World,' a series Hart curated that incorporated his solo projects, other artists' productions, and re-releases of out-of-print titles. Six of the twenty-five albums form the "Endangered Music Project," a collaboration between Mickey Hart and the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, which presents recordings from musical traditions at risk. Both 'The World' and 'The Endangered Music Project' were previously distributed by Rykodisc from 1988 to 2002. 'The Mickey Hart Collection' offers a wide variety of music from virtually every corner of the globe, recorded in a diverse range of locations from the Nubian Desert to the Papua New Guinea rainforest. "Music is our talking book, our portal to the spirit world. I hope you will enjoy these audio snapshots of my musical journey," Hart says. "It's an honor to have my recordings at Smithsonian Folkways alongside the greatest songcatchers of our time." The marimba is a vivid legacy of African presence in Latin America. But only on the Pacific coast of southern Colombia and northern Ecuador does it keep its close connections to a strongly African culture. Hailing from small towns along the Colombian coast, the seasoned women singers of Cantadoras del Pacífico raise their voices to the accompaniment of marimba and drums, performing their distinctive styles of music known collectively as currulao. Here, they perform the piece Mirando. Cantadoras del Pacífico can be heard on the Smithsonian Folkways album "iArriba Suena Marimba! Currulao Marimba Music from Colombia by Grupo Naidy". Smithsonian Folkways recording artists Los Texmaniacs play Marina from their new album

Los Texmaniacs have fun with their conjunto tejano music on audio engineer Joe Treviño's back porch in San Antonio, Texas. Max Baca (right), on the bajo sexto guitar, says conjunto began with its early pioneers "listening to the German oompa music on the radio in the late 1920s. They would imitate, but in doing so they created their own sound." To appeal to the younger generation, the Texmaniacs "put it up in high gear while preserving the natural beauty of the traditional music." "Imaginaries" by Quetzal from the Smithsonian Folkways album "Imaginaries"

Purchase the new album at folkways.si.edu: www.folkways.si.edu Inspired by traditional son jarocho music of Veracruz, Mexico, and spiked with urban rhythms, rock and R&B, East LA Chicano group Quetzal will release 'Imaginaries', its 5th album and 1st for Smithsonian Folkways, on Feb. 28, 2012. Quetzal, called "provocative, heartfelt and strikingly original" by the LA Times and founded by guitarist Quetzal Flores, rose from the ashes of uprisings in LA in 1992 as a vehicle for social commentary and activism. More information about the album release can be found here: www.folkways.si.edu "When we become critical of the discourses that teach an outlook of community assessment through a lens of deficit and instead look to our communities from an asset-based perspective, we stand to create something much more sustainable. In this sense, we imagine. We visualize. We gather our resources. We design and construct. Taking part in communities that have exercised decolonializing methods such as these, as well as dialoguing and learning from communities that survive by adopting the same strategies and principles, inspired this song." --Band member Martha Gonzales, on the title track "Imaginaries" 'Imaginaries' begins with the dark but lively "2+0+1+2=Five," about a barren landscape ruined by environmental abuse; set in 5/4 time, the composition is punctuated by lush strings, organs and eerie vocals. It sets the tone for a fiery, innovative, percussive and bilingual album that fuses <b>...</b>

Folkway Violation SOC

This is a video clip of me doing my Sociology Assignment. The assignment was to violate a social norm, a folkway (norms that are not strictly enforced). My first violation was to cheer on a stranger for no apprent reason. So, I chose to cheer on & encourage the "Cold Stone Creamery Ice Crew Member". It is one thing to be excited to do it & just get it done but it is another when your actually put on the spot with a camera and have to do it. I was very nervous doing. I didn't get the desired effect from the girl. Although, she did give me a couple weird looks but she played it off really well. Not too mention that the cheering led to extra gummy bears. Haha. So, I decided to try a second more invasive folkway violation. Invading Personal Space. I chickened out when I saw a girl sitting on the bench but then got my nerve up to go sit by a guy on a bench. My plan was to sit down then see how closely I could scoot over before he moved. This one was great. I enjoyed the assignment alot. So, did my daughter who got free ice cream & gummy bears out of the situation. :D
