US foreclosures go sky high

The Bank of America Plaza skyscraper in the state of Georgia, the tallest building in the southern US, is just another lamb to the slaughter after it was auctioned off for about half the amount it was worth five years ago. Once the symbol of the area's booming commercial real-estate market, the tower now represents its widespread failure. After the housing bubble burst, millions of homes have been foreclosed in the country. President Barack Obama's programmes have not helped nearly the number of people he said they would, while Mitt Romney, the Republican front-runner, says the answer is to let the market bottom out. Al Jazeera's Patty Culhane reports from Washington.

60 Minutes: Foreclosures

Across America, recession-fueled foreclosures and plummeting home values have left countless properties abandoned and vulnerable to looting. As Scott Pelley reports in the above video, the problem has gotten so bad in Cleveland, Ohio, that county officials have demolished more than 1000 homes this year - and plan to demolish 20000 more - rather than let the blight spread and render nearby homes worthless.

The story of foreclosures and mortgages-INfocus-04-08-2012

Millions of Americans have lost or are on the verge of losing their homes in the United States. As of March 2008, an estimated 8.8 million borrowers, 10.8 percent of all homeowners, had negative equity in their homes, a number that is believed to have risen to 12 million by November of the same year. In September 2010, 23 percent of all US homes were worth less than the mortgage loan. Barack Obama's administration has fallen short of expectations to ameliorate the travesty. The latest deal gives homeowners in crisis only about USD 2000 as a consequence of their life being turned upside down. In this week's INFocus we speak to troubled home owners and experts to discover why the US mortgage crisis is a major contributor to minorities and under privileged Americans being trapped in a system that will not afford them socioeconomic mobility. Foreclosures: Killing middle class dreams

People in Riverside, California have stopped using electricity and other utilities because they can't afford the skyrocketing prices. Banks are taking the homes off of the market and then not putting them into their inventory, making it tougher on the people trying to afford their mortgages. According to our guest George Hemminger, 25% of the people in Riverside are squatting in their own houses.

Bobby's Story: Facing Foreclosure

Made by Peter Leeman and Kyle Kehrwald Watch on Vimeo: vimeo.com Click "Show More" for details on the occupation of Bobby's home. From Occupy Minneapolis: Occupy Minneapolis will begin another home occupation to defend Vietnam era veteran Bobby Hull from eviction this Tuesday, on the national day of action against foreclosures called by Occupy Wall Street. Bobby has bravely served his country as a US Marine during the Vietnam War era and despite his sacrifice he and his family are facing eviction this winter. Bobby first began living in his South Minneapolis home when his mother bought it in 1968. The title was later transferred to him, and he made timely payments on the house for decades while his nine brothers and sisters and innumerable extended family used the home as a stable transition point as they worked through the economic downturn. Some recent health problems have caused him to fall behind in his payments. Meanwhile, US Bank has refused to negotiate with him to keep him and his family in their home. If we do nothing he and his family are facing a February eviction, in the dead of winter, with nowhere to go. Come hear directly from Bobby on the need for banks to change the way they do business with hard working families. Bobby was surprised to learn that we were organizing to help him and others in his position. "Thank God this is happening. I've read the Constitution and I know that it's supposed to be 'We the people'", Said homeowner Bobby Hull. "If people ...

Occupy MN Prompts Clergy to Oppose Home Foreclosures

Are the Occupy MN protestors making a difference by defending foreclosed homes? They are with clergy in North Minneapolis. David Snyder of Jewish Community Action ? and an organizer of the interfaith Northside Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC) press conference at Shiloh Temple today that called on banks to work with homeowners in foreclosure ? said that the Occupy movement has given NCRC and religious leaders a shot in the arm to speak out against the crisis. "Occupy MN has pushed us to think broader and to think of new tactics," said Snyder. "It has opened up political space to make broader demands. It's a critical movement. We're grateful that they're putting their bodies on the line to make the space for us to articulate these demands." Five prominent religious leaders, and one North Minneapolis homeowner who narrowly avoided foreclosure, shared the podium at Shiloh Temple on Tuesday. They were Bishop Richard Howell, Revs. Jerry McAfee, Dwight Seawood and Paul Slack, Vic Rosenthal of Jewish Community Action and homeowner Cathy Spann. Shiloh Temple is on Broadway in the heart of North Minneapolis, a neighborhood decimated by poverty, over 5000 foreclosures since the housing crisis began in 2007, and a tornado on May 22. "We're about the poor, the needy, we're about anybody here," said Bishop Howell of Shiloh Temple. "Anybody who comes through these doors from the north side. That's what we do, and we do it best." "We try to minister to the whole person ? spirit ...

From Coal to Foreclosures, Bank of America Faces Protest at Charlotte Shareholders Meeting

DemocracyNow.org - Occupy Wall Street protesters, environmental activists, and struggling homeowners are converging in Charlotte today for a protest outside Bank of America's annual shareholder meeting. The protesters are calling attention to the bank's involvement in the financial crisis, its support for the coal industry and its long record of alleged foreclosure abuses. The rally marks a test run for activism targeting September's Democratic National Convention, which will be held in Charlotte. The city recently enacted broad police powers to stop and search anyone carrying a backpack, purse or briefcase with the intent to conceal anything on a long list of prohibited items, ranging from weapons to markers to bicycle helmets. "Folks are coming to Charlotte to stand their ground against the predatory practices of Bank of America," says Rachel LaForest of the Right to the City Alliance, a national coalition of community groups that is bringing roughly 175 residents to Charlotte who have been evicted by Bank of America. "We're coming to their shareholders meeting and to say: 'This is what your practices have done to our lives.' We're entering into the space to become decision makers and ensure this stops." We're also joined by Rebecca Tarbotton, executive director of Rainforest Action Network, which is calling on Bank of America, the largest financier of the coal industry, to transition its investments out of coal and toward energy efficiency and renewable energy. Auctioneer: Stop All The Sales Right Now!

Community Members block auctions in Brooklyn court; 9 activists arrested. Date: October 13, 2011 Calling on the judicial system to institute an immediate moratorium on all foreclosures until a fair system of home loans is put into place, a group of New York City housing justice advocates disrupted the auction of several foreclosed Brooklyn properties in Civil Court on Thursday afternoon through music and song. The group, called Organizing for Occupation (O4O), was protesting what it views as a system designed to benefit financial lending institutions at the expense of homeowners and low-income communities. Although the New York judiciary instituted mandatory pre-foreclosure settlement conferences in 2009, O4O claims that these conferences do nothing to protect the rights of homeowners to remain in their homes. "No lender, be it Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citibank or Chase, has any intention of settling by means other than a foreclosure auction or another predatory modification," says Karen Gargamelli, a housing attorney and spokesperson for O4O. "These auctions displace our neighbors and destabilize our neighborhoods. We need a stronger system for dealing with foreclosures, one that holds banks accountable for making bad loans and then speculating on them as 'securitized instruments'." And until the Legislature passes more protective laws, O4O is calling on the courts to hold all foreclosure auctions, and encouraging New Yorkers to raise their own voices in the courts ...
