I replace a CV axle or halfshaft on the passenger side of a 1999 Nissan Altima. Replacement of the CV axle went pretty smoothly. First of all getting the nut off of the axle is usually kind of tricky but if you have a cheater pipe for your ratchet or some impacts it's not too bad. I figured out that if you break the nut loose before you take the tire off it works really good. I usually just stand on the end of my cheater pipe until it breaks loose. Then getting the tie rod end off can be tricky too. However I have a special tie rod end puller and a pickle fork that can be used to do that job. I prefer to use the puller though because the pickle fork damages the boot on the tie rod end. Both tools can be purchased at Auto Zone, O'reilly's or Advance Auto for about 15 dollars a peice. This Nissan CV axle on the passenger side is kind of different because it has what they call a carrier bearing. I guess since it's so long they had to put a bearing in the middle of it too. It's not bad though, it's only held on by 3 little bolts. Since it has the carrier bearing the CV axle doesn't snap into the transmission like most other cars. After the carrier bearing has been removed it slides in and out really easily. Sometimes when you take the CV axle out some transmission fluid spills on the floor. This was not the case today since I had the car jacked up so high. When I was done I went ahead and checked the transmission fluid anyway.

I replace a CV axle or halfshaft on the passenger side of my 1995 Subaru Legacy Station Wagon. First I break loose the nut that goes on the end of the axle. That part is kind of tricky but if you have a cheater bar or an impact it's not too bad. Then I unhook the hub assembly from the strut. That allows the outer end of the axle to be removed from the hub assembly. To remove the inner side of the axle I first have to knock out a pin. Once that pin is out the CV axle comes out really easily. It's almost exactly the same as doing it on the driver's side except for there is a little more exhaust in the way. They told me at the Auto Zone that the half shafts or CV axles are interchangeable between the two sides.

In this video i am showing how to replace front axle assembly and front wheel bushings in a riding lawn mower (MTD). The bushings are around 84 cents a piece so it doesn't cost much to do this. ALSO NOTE I USE WAY TO MUCH GREASE, YOU DO NOT NEED THIS MUCH GREASE!!!! And be careful when doing anything like this, its easy to bust your knuckles. I would highly recommend searching for this video "2002 Chevy Tahoe Front Right Axle Seal How to Replace" posted by another (briansmobile1) as part 1 of 2. It is excellent and he seems very experienced. Then when his video goes black, switch over to my video as part 2 to pick up where he left off on how to reassemble the gears. This will save you if you drop something or they get out of position and you don't remember how they go together. In my video I state "I think the drivers side is very easy to replace but not sure". I ended up needing to remove the CV axle in order to get the slide hammer in position (through the hub bearing). I really had to slam that hammer about 10 times before it would come free. I have read that the circlip in the inside can wear and make a burr on the shaft making it extremely difficult to remove. I forgot to check for a bur but hopefully this will be the last time it comes out anyway. One other note: I always grease the inner most surface of a seal which is normally the right thing to do and was recommended by my Haynes manual. However, these goofy seals have an inner race that ***may*** spin with the shaft (Internet people have said it does and also doesn't). I have never seen a seal like this. The axle actually showed a stain mark with the same pattern as the inner lip of the seal (like a diamond imprint). I am now wondering if I should NOT have greased the inner lip since it may cause the inside seal race to slip on the shaft and wear out <b>...</b>

I had the "Service 4WD System" message appear on my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited (5.7L Hemi with Quadra-Drive II). I checked the wiring from the Final Drive Controller (under the rear seat cushion) and verified the front axle actuator wiring and solenoid were OK (14 ohms across the solenoid wiring) but the rear axle actuator solenoid wiring was open circuit. I checked the resistance at the axle connector and it was also open circuit so the rear axle cover would have to come off. Replacing the actuator solenoid and wiring fixed the problem! Working on cars can be extremely dangerous. Take safety precautions and do all of the work slowly. BUY A CAR MANUAL. Like a haynes or chiltons manual. I personally have purchased both of those brands and have found that they are pretty good for what you pay for. This partiuclar style shown in the video isnt really the style that is in the books. There are fewer parts taken off using this method. I see no reason to completely take off the brake assembly and the strut and the tie-rods and all the other stuff many of the books call for.
