Are Greens a Part of a Fruitarian Diet?

I call myself The Fruitarian and my diet - Fruitarianism because most of my calories come from fruit. I do eat greens as well as well the occasional root vegetable and coconuts from time to time. In my food choices I try to follow my cravings and my instincts. I also pay a close attention to how different foods make me feel and how they affect my body and my performance. I don't eat any foods out of fear of deficiencies -- either mineral or caloric. I eat what I enjoy eating, what I crave the most, and what makes me feel good. I think it is very important not to become too obsessed with perfection of just one factor in your health program -- such as your diet -- striving for 100% fruit or 100% organic. While a certain degree of dedication is necessary during the transition period , once you are 'out of the woods' - you need to switch your focus to pursuing other things in life that you are passionate about. thefruitarian.com

To complete this How-To you will need: Discipline Lots of raw fruit, preferably organic Step 1: Ease into it Ease into fruitarianism by starting off with fruit for breakfast, and then slowly begin eliminating meat, dairy, grains, etc. until you are eating raw fruit exclusively. Step 2: Don't mix fruit Eat only one kind of fruit at a time, and wait at least 90 minutes before switching to a different type of fruit. Step 3: Eat only when hungry Eat only when you are feeling hungry and stop when you are satisfied. Step 4: Supplement with nuts and seeds Technically, raw fruit includes things like olives, seeds (such as pumpkin, sunflower, and sesame), and nuts, like almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, and so on. Just make sure nothing is roasted. Tip: Botanically, nuts are classified as fruits because they develop from pollinated flowers. Step 5: Limit nuts and seeds Eat as much fresh fruit as you want, but ...

Fruitarianism is NOT an Eating Disorder

Wikipedia gives the following definition of Eating Disorders: Eating disorders are a group of conditions characterized by abnormal eating habits that may involve either insufficient or excessive food intake to the detriment of an individual's physical and emotional health. Insufficient food intake usually manifests as calorie restrictive diets (anorexia), and excessive food intake - as uncontrollable binges often followed by self-induced vomiting (bulimia). These people either are not able to stop eating foods they are addicted to or they are afraid to eat any food. But I also believe that anyone who is eating foods that are clearly harmful for their health, anyone who eats for the brief pleasure of their tastebuds with disregard to long term ill consequences -- has an eating disorder. Fruitarianim is based on how all animals eat in their natural habitat: raw, unprocessed, species specific foods, one type of food at a time, when hungry until full, and whatever is in season, what is available, what is easy to get. I eat for health and by default my body maintains a healthy body weight. I eat until I am satisfied. And I eat for pleasure - I love fruit. I believe I have a very natural and healthy relationship with food. If you try Fruitarianism -- you will clearly see how many people in our society actually have an eating disorder, and perhaps, you will be a little sad to see how disorderly your own pattern of eating used to be.

Food Addiction is Real! Fruitarianism - a Life of Freedom!

Eating today is often done not for survival and nourishment. We associate our meals with our culture, comfort, entertainment, stimulation, reward, and even romance. A lot of people think that raw vegans or fruitarians have given up a significant amount of pleasure in their lives. Well, during a period of transition and withdrawal you might find the taste of fresh fruits and vegetables less intense and stimulating than the taste of cooked food full of salt, sugar and seasonings. But after a while you will find that you experience the same intensity of enjoyment if not more so eating ripe juicy fruits. The difference is that you will feel great physically, emotionally and spiritually before, during and after your meals. After eating nothing but raw fruits and vegetables for a significantly long period of time (probably about a year), there will come a day when you will stop associating any other substances with edible food. That is, when you walk into a supermarket or a deli store, you will literally not pay any attention to or think about anything else but the produce section. It's as if you quit smoking a long time ago, and don't notice cigarette racks any more. There are no vegetarians who feel sad about not eating meat. There are no former drug addicts who don't feel joy realizing that they are free from drugs. There are no fruitarians who don't feel intense pleasure eating ripe organic fruit. Give your body and your mind a chance to experience the freedom and pure ...

Grazing vs. Meals on the Fruitarian Diet

Grazing all day solved many problems that I experienced trying to eat very large volumes of fruit or vegetables when I first started out on a Fruitarian diet. As an athlete I usually require 4000-6000+ calories a day in the form of fresh fruit and some vegetables. To try and eat this many calories in only 3 meals a day requires ingesting a huge amount of food. I don't enjoy feeling like I am going to explode from eating so much, nor do I enjoy feeling tired or sedated after a massive meal. I find that eating in smaller quantities all day long is more natural, more manageable, and more enjoyable. My emotional thinking about eating large meals is too closely related to my associations with eating cooked foods. The evolution of a cooked food diet in our society is heavily tied in with having large meals at one time. It is interesting to note that in nature most carnivorous animals eat meals, whereas most herbivorous animals graze all day long. I believe eating a lot of food at once is as unnatural for us as eating cooked and processed foods. I don't think there is anything wrong with sharing food in a group with others, but having social interactions with others being based on stuffing yourself is unhealthy no matter what type of food you are eating. By eating all day long in moderation I don't find myself as hungry in the evening hours. I don't go to sleep with a very full stomach and have to get up and go to the bathroom often during the night. I sleep much better this way ...

Fruitarianism and Dates: a Message of Personal Experience

After eating pure low fat fruitarian diet for several years, you will notice that you feel better eating high water content fruits such as melons and oranges as opposed to denser fruits such as dates, raisins, bananas, mamey, etc. Lower water content dense fruits are a must during the transition of giving up cooked food and overt fats. Once you are free from cooked food, you will feel that eating high water content fruit brings a different physical and emotional experience from eating low water content fruit. Even though dense fruit doesn't introduce toxins into the body, it does require much more digestive energy and supplemental water intake. After a meal of dates or bananas you might notice that you feel tired, sleepy and, somewhat, sedated, similarly to how you used to feel after eating cooked food. You might also notice that the elimination process takes longer and perhaps is not as effortless as it normally is with lighter, high water content fruits. As the body becomes cleaner and more pure - the detox process takes less time and effort and your need for a sedative effect from more dense fruits lessens. Your body craves high water content fruits that have the advantage of needing less energy for digestion. I think that dried fruit, particularly, dates, and other dense fruit are invaluable for the transition period and also in situations where it is difficult to obtain high quality ripe fresh fruits as during winter season. I do recommend dates for very high ...

Teeth on the Fruitarian Diet

A lot of people are wondering what The Fruitarian's teeth look like? Fruit has a lot of sugar in it, doesn't it? If you have so much fruit in your mouth all the time -- wouldn't it just dissolve your teeth? Well, I haven't had any dental problems at all in the last 2.5 years since adopting a strict fruitarian diet. So, where did the myth of fruits rotting our teeth away come from? I think it came from people transitioning to the fruitarian diet that already had existing dental problems, and also from people eating too much fat, nuts and seeds, avocados, dried fruit, unripe fruit, and/or going back and forth to cooked foods. If you are transitioning to the fruitarian diet and experiencing teeth sensitivity or any other teeth problems -- take a good look at your diet and see if anything from the above could be the reason. Have faith that after a couple of years your teeth and gums will become stronger than ever before, but also consider the following tips: 1. Make sure that no more than 10% of your daily caloric intake is coming from fat (overt as well as covert). Blood sugar imbalances caused by a high fat diet can result in teeth sensitivity and demineralization. If you have blood sugar issues - it's the best to temporarily forgo overt fats completely. 2. If you have a history of candida -- focus on monomeals. Efficient digestion will help to starve off the candida and your teeth will feel stronger. 3. If you have any current teeth problems or sensitivity, try to minimize ...

Fruitarianism and a 50 Mile Run

After you stay on a Fruitarian diet for some time -- you will gradually notice that your perception of reality literally transforms. You will start seeing things differently. Colors will become brighter and more intense. You will feel deeply connected to nature. Your digestion load will lighten to an effortless purity. You will begin to experience more life. You will discover and start trusting your inborn intuition. Instead of living by the accepted rules you will realize that you have your own answers. Your thoughts will transform. You will notice that you hardly ever experience fear, anxiety, worry or anger. You will have enough energy to spread your love and compassion to ever widening circles. You will notice that your mental and physical perceptions are sharpened and your thinking is crystal clear. Occasionally you will feel as if you are living in a different dimension from most people and from where you used to live. At times you will feel that you are literally high... Today I ran 50 miles in 95F heat and it was easy. I ran as if I was a natural wild animal in nature, just doing what I was born to do, in perfect health, in perfect harmony, and on nothing but fresh natural fruits! Fruitarianism in a Cold Climate

A lot of people complain about cold weather and how it creates difficulties in maintaining a fruit based diet. I am not disagreeing that cold climates can create challenges, but I do think you have a choice in how you respond to the challenge. I love the various climates on planet earth. I love the 120F temperatures in the desert, and I love the -30F temps that I've experienced climbing mountains in the dead of winter. I love the various elements but my diet doesn't change for them. I still prefer frozen bananas over granola bars! The winter months bring out the best citrus of the whole year, not even mentioning pomegranates and persimmons. We live in a world and age where all year long we have good options to chose from. Making excuses about climate and temperature is not a good enough reason to go back to cooked addictive foods that will always compromise your health and vitality. I embrace the winter, I look forward to it. I also love the spring, summer and fall. I love all that the natural world has to offer, and I love it more when eating a fruitarian diet. www.thefruitarian.com

The Fruitarian in Daily News - November 2010

Just prior to NYC Marathon 2010 a writer from Daily News was looking for a story about a local runner. He contacted the president of my running club (The Van Cortlandt Track Club) and asked if they could interview one of the top club runners. The club's president gave the reporter my phone number. Little did he know that the main topic of his story was soon going to be about my dietary lifestyle and not so much my training and running schedule. He was so fascinated by my story that he sent over a film crew to shoot a video. Enjoy!

Detoxification - a Path to Health on a Fruitarian Diet

Detoxification or detox is the process of removal of toxic substances from a living organism, and additionally can refer to the period of withdrawal during which an organism returns to homeostasis after long-term use of an addictive substance. Detoxification can occur in many different forms including but not limited to acne breakouts, low energy, headaches, cold sores, mouth sores, diarrhea, high fever, all sorts of temporary skin rashes, coated tongue, mucus discharge through the nose, mouth or eyes, irritability, cold symptoms, etc. Detoxification sometimes manifests as an autointoxication, caused by poisoning one's body with internally released toxins as a result of insufficient food intake. In this case the body is breaking down massive amounts of body fat for fuel and therefore toxins stored in the fat are being released too quickly. You can't eat a diet that is "too clean" -- this is a myth. But you can undereat and therefore start experiencing constant "detox" symptoms and low energy. If you are convinced that you need to detoxify, go on a fast under a proper supervision, otherwise -- eat enough to support your lifestyle and goals. Try not to sabotage your detoxification attempts by going back to foods that you are trying to detoxify from. When you make a big change in your diet -- expect some adverse reactions, stick with it, and have faith from other people's experiences that it will get better.

Constipation Doesn't Exist in Nature! Elimination on a Fruitarian Diet

Going to the bathroom is something that we all do multiple times each day - every day. It's important to recognize how unnatural most people's bathroom experiences when they eat a conventional diet.
