Officer Johannes Mehserle and another officer were restraining Grant, who was prostrate and allegedly resisting arrest.[4][5][6] Officer Mehserle stood, drew his gun and shot Grant once in the back. Grant was unarmed. During his court testimony, Mehserle said that Grant then exclaimed, "You shot me!"[3][4][7] Grant was pronounced dead the next morning at Highland Hospital in Oakland.[7] The events were captured on multiple digital video and cell phone cameras. The footage was disseminated to media outlets and to various websites, where it was watched hundreds of thousands of times.[8] The following days saw both peaceful and violent protests.[9] The shooting has been variously labeled an involuntary manslaughter and a summary execution.[10] On January 13, Alameda County prosecutors charged Mehserle with murder for the shooting. A home video has surfaced showing the events surrounding the shooting death of 22-year-old man by police at a Bay Area Rapid Transit station in Oakland early New Year's day. A copy of the videotape was provided Saturday to CBS 5 by the woman who captured the scene on camera. Karina Vargas told CBS 5 that she was making the tape available so the public would know what transpired shortly after 2 am Thursday at BART's Fruitvale station when Oscar Grant was shot. The video, that Vargas said she shot on a brand new camera she received for Christmas, would seem to support previous witnesses accounts that Grant was laying on his stomach with his hands behind him on the train platform when a single shot was fired by a BART officer. According to Vargas, Grant was not resisting when the gunshot was fired. Vargas said she was standing only about 5 feet away from the shooting scene. She also said she resisted an officer's attempt to confiscate her camera. Vargas, who said she was on her way home from a New Year's celebration along the Embarcadero in San Francisco when she witnessed the shooting, contended that Grant's "rights were definitely violated" by police. BART officials have said Grant was unarmed and implied the shooting was an accident, saying the officer's gun discharged while he and four other officers responded to reports that two groups of young men were fighting on a train that had come from San Francisco and was en route to the Dublin/Pleasanton station. Painting at the Fruitvale Bart (subway) Station in Oakland (part 1)
[Done in 2008] I did this painting on the upper platform of the Fruitvale Bart (subway) Station in Oakland. The paint was really fun to create and the time of night was perfect because there wasn't a lot of foot traffic. The only challenge was getting the camera at the right angle for film .... and I only had one battery which gave me only 60 mins. I didn't time the painting but now that I think about it, had to take somewhere in the vicinity of an hour and a half to complete. The canvas was 16x20 and the media was acrylics. After I finished and was packing up the Bart (subway) police came to tell me that I can't film on the property. They said people alerted them that I was filming and it made them feel uncomfortable. Yea right, a guy with a paint brush, easel bicycle camera pointed at the canvas... didn't know art was a crime...lol. Any way I hope you enjoy the video and leave your comments below. On Saturday, July 18, 2009, The Marine Mammal Center released six California sea lions back to the ocean near the Farallon Islands 26 miles from the Golden Gate Bridge. All of the sea lions were rescued after having stranded as a result of malnourishment. and all were rehabilitated at The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, CA. One of the sea lion's released Saturday was named Fruitvale. He was rescued in June after he made his way on to a busy freeway in Oakland, CA. The Center is rescuing and treating a record number of malnourished sea lions like Fruitvale. Since the end of June, volunteers and staff have rescued over 1000 marine mammals - 720 of which were sea lions.
