FumeFX Explosion Javelin Tank Strike

This is my first effects shot. I constructed it using 3ds Max 9, FumeFx, Photoshop and After Effects.The background was created with a combination of reference pics using Photoshop. My main aim was to achieve a realistic explosion effect and comp it on top of a live action/photo plate. That's where most of my time was spent, learning how to use FumeFx. FumeFx + Krakatoa Particle Plasma.

(Took a good amount of time to get this video working with youtube, sorry if i spammed your Subscription box.) So, worked on this effect for a whole day and i really liked the way it turned out. First i started with a FumeFx simple source that shot a high velocity burst of smoke into the container, simulated that and created a particle flow around it using a few million particles. Then i used Krakatoa to cache those particles into my hdd. Then i messed around with the KMC or "Krakatoa Magma Flow" editor to use velocity vector as a variable for color generation for each particle, higher velocity = blueish color which then turns into red as the speed decreases. And there you have plasma kind of looking thing. I like it. (I still need to practice rendering + compositing of Krakatoa particles though...)

Sea World Commercial - Krakatoa & Fume FX

Fusion CI Studios created these "ink-in-water" effects for Ntropic in San Francisco for this Sea World commercial. Fusion had the opportunity to apply a new tool set from its arsenal - 3dsMax, Fume FX & Krakatoa. This combination gave us the ability to generate both turbulent fluid field and a soft volumetric render more consistent with an ink diluting in water look than you can't get out of other fluid simulators such as RealFlow. For this project we created simulations of Fume FX fluid grids interacting with the geometries of the characters (provided by Ntropic). The characters also emitted fluid from selected parts of their bodies to leave the trails in their wakes. We then used Krakatoa to generated 10s of millions of particles to follow the fluid motions. Fusion simmed and rendered these 14 elements in a 6 week time frame. Artists working on this piece were: Mike Wallner, Will Shepherd, Wayne England, William Salas, and supervised by Mark Stasiuk. Ntropic did the art-direction, character modeling & animation, character texturing and lighting and comp'ing & finishing. Overall vfx supervision: Ntropic's Andrew Sinagra.

CG Explosion wip -- Fume FX, 3DS Max & RealFlow

A slow-motion CG explosion created with 3ds Max, FumeFX and RealFlow. The explosion is a complex, multi-source expanding FumeFX smoke simulation followed by a violent expanding FumeFX fireball, all of which are sourced within the geometry of a building and funnel out thru the building's windows and doors. There are additional details created by explosively expanding RealFlow fluid sims, from which FumeFX smoke and fire is emitted. The physical parameters on the explosion dynamics, such as gravity and turbulence detail, were carefully animated to achieve the full explosion behavior of onset, expansion, and buoyant rise, over a specific timeframe required by the length of the piece. Rendering was done using the FumeFX volumetric renderer. Simulation time for the full-res explosion was about 35 hours and took up 16 gb of RAM. Additional layers of debris -- the glass and wood fragments of the window and window frames -- are not shown here but were simulated in Maya using BlastCode.
