Joyless Street - Viennese Love: Greta Garbo, Werner Krauss, Asta Nielsen (1925 Movie)

DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchived.blogspot.com Joyless Street (German: Die freudlose Gasse, 1925, exhibited in the US as The Street of Sorrow, in Britain as The Joyless Street), a film based on the novel by Hugo Bettauer and directed by Georg Wilhelm Pabst in France, is one of the first films of the "New Objectivity" movement. Greta Garbo stars in her second major role. The film is often described as a morality story in which the 'fallen woman' suffers for her sins, while the more virtuous is rewarded. In 1921 in the poor part of an Austrian town called Melchiorgasse there are only two wealthy people: the butcher Josef Geiringer and his wife. Mrs. Greifer runs a fashion boutique and a nightclub patronized by wealthy Viennese. Annexed to the nightclub is Merkl Hotel, a brothel to which the women of the nightclub bring their clients. The film follows the lives of two women from the same poor neighborhood as they try to better themselves during the period of Austrian postwar hyperinflation. They are Marie, who becomes a prostitute, and Grete who does not. At the finale Else kills the butcher because he will not give her meat. The poor of the neighborhood, hearing the sounds of the nightclub, revolt against the clients by throwing stones. The nightclub burns down killing two beggars. Only Grete seems to have any hope of leaving Melchiorgasse and this because of her relationship with an American Red Cross officer. Rotten Tomatoes reports per July 2010 that 83% of six sampled ...

Falco - Garbo

Song from album Wiener Blut...Perfect Song from perfect singer Falco ( Hans Holzel ) ....Garbo - Greta Garbo ♥ Text :) She had exquisite style , she was upper class she had supernatural grace A melange of Aphrodite and Venus combined with an angel's face She didn't talk to the press she couldn't care less She didn't even answer the phone She said on one occasion, without persuasion "I wanna be left alone" From this moment on from dusk till dawn 'till the end of time, I'll be with you you'll be with me, forever in my mind It's you I see before me, oh, oh, Garbo C'est toi que je t'adore, oh, oh, Garbo A lover's greatest story, oh, oh, Garbo The say: "Well that's amore!", oh, oh, Garbo It's you I see before me, oh, oh, Garbo C'est toi que je t'adore, oh, oh, Garbo A lover's greatest story, oh, oh, Garbo The say: "Well that's amore!", oh, oh, Garbo People say on the day of victory, no fatigue is felt Garbo, it's you who has the power that makes every man's heart melt They say that when the heart's on fire sparks fly out of the cage, but beauty is like a good wine, it tastes sweeter with age No man can guess in cold blood, what he may do in passion 'cause the things he deplores today are tomorrow's latest fashion Serving one's own passion is the greatest slavery but if in wanting you, I become your slave, I intend no bravery From this moment on from dusk till dawn 'till the end of time, I'll be with you you'll be with me, forever in my mind It's ...

Garbo and Gilbert - The Beauty of Silence

This famous scene from `Flesh and the Devil (1926) is an exemplar of silent film art. No sound sequence could match its romantic intensity. Despite the intertitles, what makes the scene unforgettable is the way it depicts the moments for which there are no words; the times where the deepest communications occur in silence. Though we instinctively look to Garbo today, Gilbert was the more famous of the two when `Flesh and the Devil' was filmed. He was considered a master of the intense romantic moment, and he discovered just how important they were when sound arrived. Scenes such as this, when accompanied by hackneyed and unnecessary dialogue, completely lost their sense of intimacy. While it is often claimed that Gilbert's voice was unsuited to sound, it was in fact his persona that could not make the transition. Had he still been alive, Rudolph Valentino would probably have suffered the same fate. As Gilbert's star fell, Garbo's soared - perhaps because her natural reserve and the mystery behind her eyes proved as compelling as silence in any role, no matter the dialogue. Golden Age Pioneers: Jean Batten - Garbo of the Skies

Jean Batten, (1909 -- 1982), was a New Zealand aviatrix whose daring and adventurous flights made her a global heroine and broke barriers of time, distance and gender. Jean competed in a male bastion of dashing bravery and proved to the world that a woman could equal and even exceed their exploits. Jean's love of flying was matched by her desire to prove herself equal to any man. These driving forces combined to create 'the Garbo of the skies', a glamorous daring adventurer who courted world wide attention to further her ambitions and then shunned it in later life. We love the fact that Jean was able to literally rise above the confines and expectations of her time, both as a woman and a pilot. She dreamed of doing something that had never been done before; a solo flight from England to Australia in under 20 days. She persevered, keeping her dream in focus, and eventually did fly to Australia, breaking the record by five days. For good measure she established another record by becoming the first woman to make the return flight as well. She then went on to even bigger dreams. Jean astonished the world with her daring feats, flying solo to make to the first flight across the southern oceans from West Africa to Brazil. She was also the first person to fly across the Tasman. On some of these flights she encountered storms which meant she did not know if she was off course or not for much of her flight. She had to trust to her instruments and keep flying. No copyright infringement intended. Greta Garbo passed away on 15th April 1990. The Swedish Sphinx has never ceased to mesmerise us. Whether it be her silent films, her talkies or those paparrzzi shots in her final years, she was always the essence of mystery, THE movie star whose presence and mark on film is unsurpassed. With eyes that told so much and yet revealed so little, Garbo is a fascination for the eyes. Her whiskey-and-cigarettes voice haunts us to this day, and is remembered when it was first heard in ANNA CHRISTIE. With all this physical beauty, it is easy to oversee the depth and quality that Garbo possessed in the acting skill. In every role she gave her heart and soul, made the character real, tugged at our heartstrings and gave performances that are the benchmark for every actress after her. Greta Garbo is, and remains, the most precious being that lit up the screen. The music to the photos at the beginning is ANY OTHER NAME composed by Thomas Newman for American Beauty. And the song for the clips is MY LIFE by Dido. The song talks about being independent, which Garbo was.

Garbo: Poika julman maan

Garbo: Poika julman maan Tähän kaupunkiin synnyin kauas pohjoiseen, missä jäinen tuuli tunkeutuu sielun syvyyteen. Missä ihmiset on tottuneet työtä tekemään, otsa hiessä leipänsä syömään. Mä oon poika, poika julman maan, syntynyt, syntynyt uhrautumaan. Vuoksi pelkän kunnian vaan, aina maksaa saa poika julman maan. Minä ja Kati oltiin 18 vaan, ja me uskottiin ettei rakkaus pysty kuolemaan. Mut mä sain käskyn lähtee armeijaan, Kati ei mua jaksanut oottaakaan. Mä oon poika, poika julman maan, syntynyt, syntynyt uhrautumaan. Vuoksi pelkän kunnian vaan, aina maksaa saa poika julman maan. Mä oon poika, poika julman maan, Syntynyt, syntynyt uhrautumaan. Vuoksi pelkän kunnian vaan, aina maksaa saa poika julman maan. Julman maan... Julman maan... Poika julman maan...
