The death toll has pushed past two dozen on the Palestinian side, with many more wounded, most of them civilians. The Israeli military said its first air strike on Friday killed Zuheir al-Qessi, who Palestinians said headed the Popular Resistance Committees, armed activists from different factions. Israel named a second militant leader killed as Mahmoud al-Hanani. Israel released video purporting to be of what it calls preventive targeting to kill militants. The death of a Palestinian militant whose car was targeted by Israeli forces in Gaza City has sparked the worst violence the area has seen for almost a year, with Israel on the receiving end of sustained rocket attacks. The Israeli army confirmed strikes have been carried out and said it was checking reports that a boy had died. He's said to have been killed in northern Gaza. A Palestinian militant reportedly died in a separate attack. The escalating violence has brought calls for a ceasefire from the UN, the EU, the Palestinian Authority and Egypt. Militant groups in Gaza, vowing revenge for the Israeli strikes, have fired more than 100 rockets into southern Israel since Friday. Six people have been injured, one seriously. The police say several more projectiles have been fired into Israeli territory on Sunday. Some 25 were intercepted on Saturday before they landed in Israel, according to the military. The Gaza Strip's only power station has been shut down, cutting electricity in the area by almost two-thirds. The Palestinian enclave usually relies on fuel smuggled in from Egypt, but the power facility has run out. Gaza is under a sea and land blockade imposed by Israel, which prevents regular shipments of power to the area. A trip to the zoo usually means the chance to see live exotic animals on display, but the Dream Park El Janoob Zoo in Khan Younis on the Gaza Strip showcases its animals in a different way. Visitors are treated to an entire exhibition of mummified animals. Workers embalm dead animals such as lions and tigers that are then placed in cages. This gives people the chance to stroke the furry creatures without being attacked, as would happen with a living wild animal. The reasons for a seemingly morbid method of displaying animals is due to financial shortages in shipping of live creatures from countries like Egypt and Senegal and ongoing challenges in importing goods into Gaza. Israel has imposed land, air, and sea blockades on the territory since 2007, in a bid to prevent illegal smuggling of weapons and military material from reaching its Islamist rulers Hamas. Among the visitors are school children, and like Rwan Ghames, they are very well aware of the reasons for displaying mummified animals at the local zoo. Zoo owner Ziad Owadah maintains the mummified animals, and says that it would be a waste to get rid of them considering how expensive they were to purchase, so he decided to embalm them. The zoo charges an entrance fee of $15 for a busload of children, who also get the opportunity to see a few live animals as well, which Owadah belives enhances the zoo experience by seeing animals in all forms. Refugees in the Gaza Strip which is home to the largest Palestinian refugee population in the Middle East held a rally to mark the Nakba Day. The day of catastrophe or Nakba marks the expulsions of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees of their homes prior to the creation of Israel on their lands in 1948. They were displaced from Palestine and lost their land and property. Six decades down the road, Palestinian refugees are scattered in camps in the West bank and Gaza Strip, or in neighboring countries like Jordan, Syria, Lebanon or elsewhere, but they are still holding fast to their Palestinian identity and right of return. In December of 1948, the UN General Assembly resolution 194 called for the return of all Palestinian refugee's to their homeland. The Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip has meant that farmers have not been able to export most of their produce, starving them of a much needed economic lifeline. Palestinian farmers grow strawberries, peppers, tomatoes and flowers, but Israel's security blockade since 2007 has meant most produce won't find an external market. According to the terms of an agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority in 2005, about 400 trucks of fruit and vegetables should be exported from Gaza every day. But at the only crossing out of Gaza still operating for goods, the number of trucks making it out of the territory are much lower. Al Jazeera's Rory Challands reports from Gaza Strip.
