Priming with W&N Artists' Acrylic Gesso

Artists' Acrylic White Gesso Primer www.artsupplies.co.uk This gesso is made from the highest quality acrylic resin. It has a superior level of pigmentation to give maximum covering power, so one coat is usually enough. However we recommend using two coats for unprimed canvases when used with oil colour. It is fast drying and opaque and dries to give an excellent level of tooth and a balanced absorbency. It dries to a non-yellowing, flexible ground suitable for acrylic, oil and alkyd painting. It can be used straight from the pot and dilution is not recommended. Artists' Acrylic Clear Gesso www.artsupplies.co.uk This gesso is made from unpigmented clear resin which provides excellent tooth but dries completely clear, therefore it doesn't change the original appearance of your ground. If you want to start your work from a coloured ground, you can make your own tinted gesso primers by the addition of acrylic colours. We recommend using up to 1 part Artists' Acrylic colour with 4 parts Clear Gesso, and opaque colours will give a better result. It is fast drying and provides a balanced absorbency. It dries to a flexible ground suitable for acrylic, oil and alkyd painting. It is also suitable for preparing a surface for pastel or charcoal.

My 1st Tutorial Gesso + Glimmer Mist

The materials you need and the colors that I used: I used a butterfly stencil from Tattered Angels (Set= Fanciful Stencils) Glimmer Mist: Key Lime; Fully Purple; Caribean Blue My Mini Mr.'s were filled with a grassy green and ultramarine blue Inspite of the Mists or Sprays you could also do it with a brush and aquarell or watercolor paints. The result would be a little different, but you can experiment. You need thick cardstock, Gesso, a big brush, papertowels and a heatgun( not necessarily, but very handy)

Bob Ross style b/w gesso painting

Well I said I would post a response to Gary's b/w Bob Ross style gesso painting so here it is, as this was my first painting I was a bit terrified of the paint and of destroying a perfectly good canvas panel, I think I bit a little more off than I could chew using a 38x46cm though and despite all of that, as a complete beginner with no teaching, no technique, no experience & no idea whats going on in life, I'm pretty satisfied with the result. Now to find a frame that does it justice!!

Art Journal Challenge - No Gesso

Note: Sorry for the typos in the subtitles! I should've proof viewed it before I published it... So in layer two, it's paint, not pain ;) And collag. It's collage :D For some reason it kept cutting off the last letter. Hmph :/ So the other day, I was searching high and low for my gesso, and I just couldn't find it anywhere!! Finally I just gave up. I knew my gesso would eventually pop up somewhere, and I'd bonk myself on the head and say "Oh duh! It was there all along!" But I really really wanted to paint, but I just couldn't wait until I found gesso. So I took up the challenge! Can we still art journal without gesso? {What is so important about Gesso?} Gesso is almost always used as a primer. It's a thick white paint that helps the paper become stronger to holding up lots of paint and collage. Also, if you put Gesso on textured paper, like watercolor paper, it'll give it the smooth surface while still absorbing the paint like paper is supposed to, but not ever letting the paint seep through the whole page. So in doing this experiment, I'm NOT trying to prove that you don't NEED gesso, I'm just doing a fun experiment on what happens when there is no gesso. And I noticed that my page was very flimsy, and it might take a lot of abuse later on. So lesson learned! Art Journaling with Gesso is possible, but not the best choice!
