jazzguitarlegend.com Standard, Les Paul - SOLD - JULY 2011 33 years old and still rockin'...probably better than ever. Like a fine wine, the wood in these vintage guitars just keeps improving. This is a Gibson Les Paul Standard in rare three-colour sunburst made in 1978 in the original Gibson Workshop in Kalamazoo. In other words, made in the same place by the same craftsmen who made the 1958 Les Paul sunbursts that are now worth half a million dollars each. Gibson stopped making the Les Paul Standard between 1961 and 1968, and made the SG instead. But consumer demand led to the reintroduction of the Standard in late 1968, made as closely as possible to the original classics. The neck pickup has the Patent Number stamped into the underside, and is consistent with what would have been put in a 1978 Les Paul at the Gibson workshop. The bridge pickup is a "Classic 57" pickup from the 1980s, which must have been put in at some point as a replacement for the original. Have a listen to the YouTube clip...both pickups sound great. The neck is three-piece maple (see photo) and well broken-in by thousands of playing hours. But importantly, it has never been broken! Many of these early Les Pauls have headstock and/or neck repairs. This one is rock solid; no breaks, no repairs. As Les Pauls go, this beauty is a bit on the heavy side. Not necessarily what you want hanging off your shoulder for a three hour gig. But she's got tone to die for! She's also got a few scars, including belt ...
