A class of Stanford University graduate students have been honored as the Autodesk Inventor of the Month for October for developing a prototype of the recyclable Bloom laptop. The Bloom is the project of a team of students from Stanford and Finland's Aalto University who were given the task to create a recyclable consumer electronics product that makes electronics recycling a simpler, more effective and engaging process for consumers. The students used Autodesk Inventor and Autodesk Inventor Publisher software to help develop and refine the innovative laptop during the school year. Creating 3D digital prototypes of the hardware components inside the laptop aided in creating a readily accessible laptop design that is also easy to disassemble. When separated into different material types — such as plastics, metals and circuitry — the Bloom laptop's modular design makes it easy for consumers to decrease the amount of electronic waste added to landfills. For example, 1.9 to 2.2 million tons of electronics became obsolete in 2005, with only 345000 to 379000 tons being recycled. The Bloom can be disassembled in just two minutes, without tools and in just 10 steps. By comparison, a commercially available laptop takes about 45 minutes to disassemble, requires three separate tools and involves as many as 120 steps.

UMass Amherst graduate students held a workout class outside of Whitmore today at noon AGAIN to protest the rise in gym fees. -- The Grad Student Senate (GSS), Grad Employee Organization (GEO) and several graduate students have been working hard to lower the gym fees, which were raised from $40/semester to $125 in just one year. But it seems that the UMass administration is attempting to balance their budget at the expense of student health, and by increasing skyrocketing student debt. -- Reps from GSS and GEO and other grad students met with the administration (Athletic Director John McCutcheon, Vice Chancellor for Admin and Finance Joyce Hatch and Campus Rec Director Zulma Garcia) on Oct. 8 with a proposal available on umassgss.org for a $50 bundled package with access to both the old and new facilities. -- We provided them with results of the email survey we sent out, which you can see here. One of the most instantly recognizable features of glass is the way it reflects light. But a new way of creating surface textures on glass, developed by researchers at MIT, virtually eliminates reflections, producing glass that is almost unrecognizable because of its absence of glare — and whose surface causes water droplets to bounce right off, like tiny rubber balls. 2012 Charles E. Young Humanitarian Awards go to three outstanding UCLA students. Kendra Knudsen, 22, of Pleasanton, Calif., a psychobiology major who will graduate in winter 2013, developed the Creative Minds Project at Step Up on Second, a nonprofit organization in Santa Monica that serves people with mental illness. The project utilizes creative art therapies to foster change and progress toward recovery, stability and reintegration into society. In particular, Knudsen is an art teacher and coordinator of "Julie's Room," Step Up on Second's art studio, where she is bringing together UCLA undergraduate and graduate students to facilitate creative art therapy groups. "Kendra's attentive listening skills, sensitivity and thoughtfulness are a great help to our members," Aaron Criswell, director of supportive services for Step Up on Second, said in recommending Knudsen for the award. "Many of our members are not only fighting the stigma of mental illness but homelessness as well. Kendra's sincere acceptance of the members and her promotion of dignity and compassion make 'Julie's Room' a popular haven." Knudsen plans to pursue a doctorate in clinical neuropsychology to investigate how creative thinking may yield health benefits for both mentally ill and healthy individuals.
