(Read my blog post here: Read my blog post here: bit.ly Dobie Gray's version of "Drift Away" is, justifiably, the most famous and, by far, the most brilliant reading of the Mentor Williams-penned (that would be Paul Williams' brother) 70s staple. Originally released on John Henry Kurtz' 1972 REUNION album, the indelible classic always takes me away...to that far away place I used to reside -- within the deepest caverns of my soul. At times the song makes me weep, as I miss the halcyon days of my youth and the kinder world we thrived in. When any ills of the world would be swept away when reaching for your LP of your favorite music was all that was needed to, well, drift away. The song was covered hundreds of times these past 40 years, most famously and recently in a passionless 2003 recording by Uncle Kracker. Credited as Uncle Kracker featuring Dobie Gray, the track meandered along in karaoke sterility until finally Gray's soul chimed in mid-point and he infused it with a thrilling tremble. When the track reached #9 on Billboard's Top 100, Gray broke the record for the biggest gap between top US top 10 appearances (it had been 30 years between both). The Kracker version had a far more major impact on Billboard's Adult Contemporary charts -- it holds the record as the longest #1 on that chart, having reigned for 28 weeks in 2003-04. Click here to see the video! blip.tv I Mike Hanson, answered the comment line and worked in Alex Jones office for many years. Mrs. Gray sent letters and called for several years trying get me to talk Alex into going to East Texas to do a story for his TV and radio show for the Grays personal problems relating to a custody battle over their grandkids. Alex didn't want to do a story on a personal problem but the Grays persisted in calling. Later the custody battle turned into a standoff situation as a result of John Gray being stopped in his vehicle and refusing to go to court. Mrs. Gray called my cell phone with this new information about the standoff. Alex and I went to the Gray Ranch to talk to the Grays and ended up staying off and on for the next several weeks. Mrs. Gray personally asked me to tape and air their story. I stayed up 24 hours in a row editing the video which played on Public Access TV the next night after getting the footage. The same footage that was released to 20/20 was shown on Access TV at Mrs. Grays request before it was shown on 20/20. So the video was already in the public domain. If I had known the way the Grays would turn on Alex and I, even as far as pulling a gun on us, I would not have spent so much time trying to help them, and would instead have spent the time with my wife and young children. Spalding Gray in his "talking cure" one man performance. Not only one of the best "one man" performances ever, but actually, one of the best films ever. May, Spalding Gray, be forever remembered. As a film buff and artist, i can easily say Spalding Gray had changed my perspective on life with his monologues. Spalding Gray's Swimming to Cambodia is a 1987 Jonathan Demme-directed performance film (beore Silence of the Lambs, and Philidelphia, but after Stop Making Sense). The film is a performance of Spalding Gray's monologue ("Talking Cure") which centered around the themes as his trip to Southeast Asia to create the role of the US Ambassador's aide in The Killing Fields, and his search for his "perfect moment". Swimming to Cambodia was originally a theatre piece on which Gray spent two years working. Swimming to Cambodia won Gray an Obie award. The opening shots of the film depict Gray walking toward The Performing Garage in New York. He goes in and after walking in past the audience, he takes his seat behind a table. On the table is a glass of water, a microphone and a notebook which Gray brought with him. Behind him are two pulldown maps. One is a map of Southeast Asia and the other is a diagram of the bombing of Cambodia, which Gray tells the viewers was called Operation Menu. Johan Gray : Motorcyclist Saves Calf from Canal
Johan Gray was riding along a canal on his dual-sport bike and spotted a calf struggling in a steep-walled canal. Gray then MacGyvers his way down into the canal using his bike's frame as an anchor, and rescues the calf. He then gives the calf a ride back to its herd. The calf rescue was capture by Gray's helmet-cam. The best thing about this video is that the uploader did not feel compelled to add an annoying soundtrack or anything beyond simple subtitles. Johan Gray was riding in the Amageza 2012 rally qualifier, but took time out to help a hoofed stranger in need. Check out the calf-rescue video below... you'll go, "aaawww".
