Transcript: That was another really interesting opportunity to be involved in the process of reviewing the submissions from a number of really amazing environmental forerunners and looking at three levels of engagement and looking at a senior executive who has done some really groundbreaking activities within their company to push forward the environmental agenda, also looking at a staff member who has done the same within a company, and then looking at a team to see a team that's really rallied and taken the environmental performance of the company forward in a really meaningful way. And I think it opened my eyes to what so many different companies are doing both large and small, companies here in Canada are doing to green their operations. We looked at the performance so are there clear metrics to show that the company has been successful with these initiatives and then also to look at the process. And that was an interesting bucket to see to the extent to which it engaged within its own corporate culture and also to see how it engaged within its broader corporate community such as its industry peers to reach out and share best practices. Helen talks about creating beneficial insect habitats: bees, parasitic wasps, (in april she was experiencing a 1-to-1 ratio of parasitized aphids to non parasitized aphids), spiders, ground beetles ... Broccoli, brussel sprouts and cabbage yields are explored. Using three foot wide raised beds. The minimum till was done with a single shank chisel plow followed by a light tilling with a tiller/rotovator. Living mulches experimented with include clover which contributes nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, but also competes with the production crop. goodnews.ws The house; It was built by myself and my father in law with help from passers by and visiting friends. 4 months after starting we were moved in and cosy. I estimate 1000-1500 man hours and £3000 put in to this point. Not really so much in house buying terms (roughly £60/sq m excluding labour).The house was built with maximum regard for the environment and by reciprocation gives us a unique opportunity to live close to nature. Being your own (have a go) architect is a lot of fun and allows you to create and enjoy something which is part of yourself and the land rather than, at worst, a mass produced box designed for maximum profit and convenience of the construction industry. Building from natural materials does away with producers profits and the cocktail of carcinogenic poisons that fill most modern buildings. Main tools used: chainsaw, hammer and 1 inch chisel, little else really. Oh and by the way I am not a builder or carpenter, my experience is only having a go at one similar house 2yrs before and a bit of mucking around inbetween. This kind of building is accessible to anyone. My main relevant skills were being able bodied, having self belief and perseverence and a mate or two to give a lift now and again.This building is one part of a low-impact or permaculture approach to life. This sort of life is about living in harmony with both the natural world and ourselves, doing things simply and using appropriate levels of technology. These sort of low cost <b>...</b>
