2011 Green Car of the Year - General Motors Chevy Volt
The first electric vehicle to capture the Green Car of the Year award presented by Green Car Journal is General Motors Chevy Volt. The Volt is a plug-in hybrid electric car that can go about 40 miles on one charge and about 300 more while a tank of gasoline recharges the battery. It was chosen by a panel of experts over four other finalists - 2011 models of the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, all-electric Nissan LEAF, and gas-powered but high-mileage Ford Fiesta. At present, the Chevy Volt has only been available on a limited and lease basis through pilot programs with electric companies but is expected to go on sale this December in California and six other selected areas. The four-seat Volt carries a hefty, Government and Union set price tag of about $40000, less a federal incentive tax credit of $7500 in taxpayer funded monies. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced Thursday the city and the Department of Water and Power are expanding a program of additional (government based) financial incentives and charging-station upgrades designed to make it easier for motorists to use electric vehicles. Villaraigosa said Los Angeles and other Southern California cities and utilities have "made a lot of headway" in the year since he outlined the regional plan to pave the way for a rush of environment-friendly cars in 2010-11. The students compete in designing, building and racing electric cars. Designed, built and raced by teenagers. This is the Greenpower Education Trust's annual endurance race - a four hour test of engineering and teamwork - with all the cars using identical batteries and electric motors, says Greenpower's Emma Tyler. [Emma Tyler, Greenpower Education Trust]: "They have two batteries on the car, they have four batteries in quarantine -- they can swap them over in a series of pit stops. So they've also got to work out their pit strategy and their team work as well as all the engineering." Teams must have six drivers and six pit staff and cars must have a maximum speed of 25mph (40kmh) - the test is how many laps can you complete within the timescale. 80 teams from around the country won a place at the Goodwood race track final - racing creations made from wood to aluminum - inspiring the next generation of British engineers and their parents, according to Tom Bollard from the Malting School in Essex. As the price of gas remains high many are turning to more environmentally friendly options. The German Automobile Club has come out with a list of the most environmentally friendly cars. Asian carmakers Toyota and Honda once again come out on top. Is this the greenest car on the roads? This Toyota Prius Hybrid topped Germany's VCD Automobile Club's annual list of the most environmentally-friendly vehicles. It was followed by another Toyota model, the iQ, and in third place the Honda Insight Hybrid. The VCD's been rating 300 car models each year for the past 20 years. They measure the fuel used and emissions released for each kilometre driven. Plus how noisy the car is. The VCD's spokesman says the top three cars are all hybrids. [Gerd Lottsiepen, Spokesman German VCD Automobile Club]: "These are vehicles with a petrol engine and an electric motor, so they can be cheap to run. They are very quiet, and that is important to secure a place on the VCD's environmentally-friendly list." As Japanese carmakers take the top three positions - many will wonder where the European manufacturers are. Two German carmakers - Daimler and VW - are in the top ten.
