2010 "Dutch Groundhog Day" on the Beemster Polder
This Dutch Groundhog Day signals the start to spring and is quite an experience to see as the cows literally run and jump with anticipation as they can now freely graze on the lush, untouched spring pastures of the Beemster polder. Beemster Graskaas is a rare, extra smooth cheese made in April from the first milking of the cows as they leave the barn for the first time after the cold, windy winter. The milk taken during the first weeks of Spring is the creamiest and is used to create a special edition cheese to be released at the Spring Cheese Festival. For more information: www.beemster.us

This is our pet Ground Hogs-Daisy Mae & Boots getting some special treats for ground hogs day. They were hilarious eatting this 7 grain bread. It kept getting stuff to the roof of their mouth. My husband said this is nothing. He gives them his peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that are left from work some days and that is even funnier-watching them get that off the roof of their mouths. They have eat this since they were born!!!

Gobblers Knob was the scene for the February 2nd excitement as thousands gathered to worship the opinion of a rat!! Groundhog Day is a holiday celebrated on February 2nd in the United States and Canada. According to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, it will leave the burrow, signifying that winter will soon end. If it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow, and winter will continue for six more weeks. Modern customs of the holiday involve celebrations where early morning festivals are held to watch the groundhog emerging from its burrow. In southeastern Pennsylvania, Groundhog Lodges (Grundsow Lodges) celebrate the holiday with fersommlinge, social events in which food is served, speeches are made, and one or more g'spiel (plays or skits) are performed for entertainment. The Pennsylvania German dialect is the only language spoken at the event, and those who speak English pay a penalty, usually in the form of a nickel, dime or quarter, per word spoken, put into a bowl in the center of the table.
