Gobblers Knob was the scene for the February 2nd excitement as thousands gathered to worship the opinion of a rat!! Groundhog Day is a holiday celebrated on February 2nd in the United States and Canada. According to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, it will leave the burrow, signifying that winter will soon end. If it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow, and winter will continue for six more weeks. Modern customs of the holiday involve celebrations where early morning festivals are held to watch the groundhog emerging from its burrow. In southeastern Pennsylvania, Groundhog Lodges (Grundsow Lodges) celebrate the holiday with fersommlinge, social events in which food is served, speeches are made, and one or more g'spiel (plays or skits) are performed for entertainment. The Pennsylvania German dialect is the only language spoken at the event, and those who speak English pay a penalty, usually in the form of a nickel, dime or quarter, per word spoken, put into a bowl in the center of the table.

On Tuesday, February 1, 2011 lasting through the morning of Wednesday, February 2, 2011, Chicago experienced a historic blizzard with severity that is seen on average once every 20 years. This particular storm had a magnitude comparable to the blizzard of January 26-27, 1967. Over the course of 35 hours on January 26-27, 1967, 23 inches of snow fell on Chicago. As of 10:30 am on Wednesday, February 2, 2011, 20.2 inches of snow was recorded at O'Hare International Airport and 20.9 inches at Midway International Airport, putting the storm ahead of the infamous blizzard of January 1979 that left 18.8 inches. The Chicago Blizzard of 2011 has become the 3rd biggest on record with later reports that could confirm it to be in 2nd place. Snow fell for a total of 22 hours. This blizzard produced snowfall rates of 2-3 inches per hour at times with wind gusts exceeding well over 50 mph. Wind gusts hit 70 mph at the lakefront. Spectacular lightning followed by significant rumbles of thunder occurred with this storm. As reported by Chief Meteorologist from WGN-TV 9 Weather Center, Tom Skilling and Frank Wachowski from Midway. The first few seconds into the film appears the surface analysis on Tuesday, February 1, 2011. Note the boundary of high pressure off to the North and a low pressure track below progressing from southwest to northeast. A typical setup for blizzards. This Dutch Groundhog Day signals the start to spring and is quite an experience to see as the cows literally run and jump with anticipation as they can now freely graze on the lush, untouched spring pastures of the Beemster polder. Beemster Graskaas is a rare, extra smooth cheese made in April from the first milking of the cows as they leave the barn for the first time after the cold, windy winter. I realize the length of the video, but if you wish to briefly view each of the four scenes that make up the footage, you are more than welcome to do so. :) To facilitate your viewing, the times listed below show where each section begins: Radar imagery: Beginning Snowfall footage: 0:40 On the road: 4:12 Evening scene: 10:33 I tirelessly monitored this Groundhog Day storm since it was in its infancy, carefully following its intensification stages and particularly the storm trajectory for nearly a week's time. As it turned out, this was a tremendously powerful and massive area of low pressure (the equivalent size of nearly half of the US, and it had a central minimum pressure of 993-994 mb) that soon became a fearsome storm for many across much of North America with record-breaking snowfall. As Texas lows are very moisture-laden, heavy snow and blowing/drifting snow were the principal attributes of this system. Enduring periods of freezing rain were also observed in a narrow band just South of the snow zone in the midwestern and eastern US This video shows various scenes of the same storm that brought us heavy snows here in Montreal, starting on the early morning of Groundhog Day and enduring into the overnight hours. Snow totals are likely close to 25 cm (some of my measurements are close to this value at last check) and snow drifts are very impressive!
