Chess Openings: Grunfeld Defense

The Grunfeld Defense is one of the most popular chess defenses against the d4 opening from white. Black looks to play a hypermodern defense by allowing white to control the center of the board and counterattack the center with this minor pieces. White much be careful and defend properly or his center control will vanish. White also has the option to decline and continue with a more aggressive line. www.thechesswebsite.com Chess Software used in the video can be found at http and www.chessok.com

Grunfeld Schlummerlied Schumann Rec. 1913

The first notable pianist to record, Alfred Grunfeld (1852-1924)was a pupil of Theodore Kullak and a friend and colleague of Brahms,Johann Strauss Jr. and Leschetizky. Wrongly often concidered to be a "salon pianist," his programs included late Beethoven Sonatas and rarely heard (at that time ) Schubert. His playing was praised by von Bulow and the notoriously hard to please critic, Hanslick.

Chess.com - The Complete Grunfeld: Fischer's Masterpiece!

As the author, FIDE Master Lilov, points out -- This game was one of Bobby Fischer's finer moments (at the age of 14 no less). Of course the Grunfeld theme is continued with flare, and we see the instructive idea illustrated: Just because you have the center, doesn't mean it is an advantage. In many cases in fact, your extended center may become a target itself... Full video available at www.Chess.com

Karol Szreter plays Strauss-Grunfeld Soirée de Vienne

rec. 1926 Karol Szreter, Born: 1898 in Lódz, Poland Died: March 20, 1933 in Berlin, Germany Pianist Karol Szreter started out a child prodigy, making his first public appearance in his native Poland at about the age of 9. At age 13 he was awarded a scholarship to study piano at the St. Petersburg Conservatoire and he remained there until the outbreak of World War I. Afterwards Szreter completed his studies in Berlin with the great Egon Petri. While a meeting between Szreter and Petri's mentor Ferruccio Busoni has not been established as a matter of fact, it is more than likely that there was contact somewhere along the line, and Szreter's recorded performances bear certain recognizable pianistic traits that are held in common within the "Busoni Circle." At war's end Szreter began his career in earnest with a series of successful concerts given in Central and Eastern Europe. Szreter recorded prolifically, beginning with acoustic records made for the German Vox label in the early 1920s. Around 1925 Szreter struck up a relationship with the German branch of the Parlophone label, and this firm would continue to engage Szreter's talents for the rest of his days. Parlophone is a pop label, and the vast majority of Szreter's many recordings would consist of popular melodies, usually backed by an orchestra. However, the upside of this arrangement was that on occasion Szreter was provided far more latitude to record serious literature than was allowed most of his contemporaries ...

Alfred Grünfeld (1852-1924): Soirée de Vienne

The great Alfred Grünfeld playing his arrangement of some Johann Strauss melodies, recorded in 1910 (25 October). Grünfeld was the first great pianist to make any kind of commercial recordings, which he commenced in 1899. He left recordings of works by Bach, Chopin, Schumann, Grieg, Debussy, Liszt, Brahms and others; but Grünfeld was known primarily as a provider of light entertainment music in Vienna, and his arrangements of Strauss's music are his most famous and enduring legacy. Note the sprung rhythms, smiling charm and sheer genial wit in the performance: this music is more often performed today as mere virtouso display.

Die Fledermaus (Johann Strauss - Grünfeld)

Stereo: www.youtube.com This clearly needs more work, but for the sake of keeping me motivated I felt a need to make this little "snapshot" today :) Once I'll be able to play this more musically and with less mistakes it will be dedicated to fellow piano friends Monica and Kleines Cis for their help in translating and understanding the text of Glinka's Lark. Alfred Grünfeld (1852-1924) was an Austrian pianist and composer. He was the first notable pianist to make an audio recording, and some of his wonderful playing is also available on Youtube. As a composer, he became famous by his transcriptions of Johann Strauss (the younger) waltzes, with whom he was good frieds. Strauss dedicated his "Frühlingsstimmenwalzer" to him, and remarked that Grünfeld was playing it "more beautifully than he ever conceived it". The piece I'm playing here is the most famous of Grünfeld's transcriptions and has been popular among generations of pianists, such as Backhaus, Buchbinder, or Kissin.
