Orbital Habitat -------------------- This design is based on the famous Stanford Torus.This one is quite a bit larger but still rotates at about 1RPM to provide centripetal* force in order to simulate gravity approximating 1G. There are other notable differences. The Stanford Torus specified terraced farming levels on the inner rims, and housing scattered among the "plains" and low hills. This one features large agricultural areas, with most of the living spaces assigned to the rims where the major transport systems would be located. Also featured is the central canal or river of the habitat. This provides irrigation for farms, a secondary transport channel within the colony, and kilometres of shoreline for recreational and aquaculture activities. The original Stanford Torus was designed to accommodate approximately 10000 people. This design is for more in the order of 20-30000. Tangram 3DS brings Floating City to Life Tangram 3DS, a firm specializing in visualization and computer animation, announced its collaboration with E. Kevin Schopfer AIA, RIBA. Together, the companies have designed and presented a bold new urban platform. New Orleans Arcology Habitat (NOAH) is a proposed urban Arcology (architecture and ecology), whose philosophic underpinnings rest in combining large scale sustainability with concentrated urban structures, and in this case a floating city. Tangram 3DS worked with Schopfer to visualize this unique concept and structure. Starting from basic sketches, Tangram 3DS transformed Schopfers ideas into visuals and an animation. Our work helps Kevin convey his concept to the City of New Orleans, investors, the media, and public, said Stefan Vittori, president and founder of Tangram 3DS, LLC. Our tank is made of acrylic. It is 8 feet long, 3 feet wide, and 17" tall. Water depth is 12". We have two 3-stripe mud turtles, three common musk turtles, and about 16 Cory catfish. I have tried to create as natural a habitat as possible. The turtles behave almost as if I wasn't there, kind of like having a front row seat in a local stream or lake. Built entire system for about $400, got tank and stand almost free off craigs list, had to reenforce stand and paint black to match decor. Rocks I got from construction left overs (free). They love their new basking area and large area to swim around. Tank is undersized by 15 - 25 gallons of water since its 10 gal for every inch of turle so next tank will need to be bigger once they grow a bit more.

On the morning of Thursday, November 4, 2010, the Los Angeles Zoo moved 25-year-old Asian elephant Billy into a completed section of the new six-acre Elephants of Asia exhibit, scheduled to open December 16. Zoo staff used pumpkins to create a trail for Billy to follow into his new home. After cautiously stepping into the new habitat, Billy began eating the pumpkins along with some of the landscaping. Billy then showered himself underneath the new waterfall and dug into the river sand which surrounds the habitat. "Seeing Billy explore and engage inside his new habitat, was an amazing and rewarding sight," said Los Angeles Zoo Director John Lewis. "All of the hard work and dedication on the part of Zoo staff and supporters is paying off and the Los Angeles Zoo is excited to share this incredible exhibit and these stunning animals with Angelenos." The new Elephants of Asia exhibit is scheduled to open December 16th. The habitat will include features dedicated to the health and welfare of the elephants such as bathing pools, sandy hills, varied topography, enrichment opportunities and a state of the art barn that is capable of caring for elephants of all ages. Elephants of Asia will focus on the rich connection between elephants and the cultures of Thailand, India, China and Cambodia.
