Video tutorial of new Haiku version, each time nearer of final release!

It's been quite a long time since I've made any Haiku OS videos. Here is a short demo of the latest revision (r43034). This OS has come a long way in the past 10 years.

Now Haiku OS has gone Alpha I show installing it in Virtual box and what it can do. A very interesting piece of technology and shocking slick for a OSS operating system in alpha.

These are prototypes produced using Haiku, but are not currently part of Haiku! By Ahmed Al Hassani and Mohannad Hammadeh. Ahmed and Mohannad extended the Haiku app server with functionality for tiling and stacking of windows. That is, windows can be arranged in a non-overlapping manner by snapping them to other windows, or stacked similar to tabbing in a web browser. The two have not only implemented the new features but have also evaluated them using eye tracking equipment, showing that with a high probability stack & tile is more efficient in certain situations.

Visualization of activity on the Haiku OS git repository done with Gource. www.haiku-os.org code.google.com www.haiku-os.org I used a combination of the Gravatar script ( code.google.com ) and some custom done icons for some of the users, replaced the default user icon with a modified "People" icon from Haiku, dropped in the Haiku logo, and did a number of other tweaks. Command line: gource --hide filenames -c 4 --load-config gource2.cfg --max-user-speed 100 -r 25 -o gource.ppm Encoding line: ffmpeg -y -r 25 -f image2pipe -vcodec ppm -i gource.ppm -vcodec libx264 -vpre veryslow -crf 1 -threads 4 -bf 0 gource4.mp4 Config file (minus the long list of usernames I had to add to get the username highlighting to work since there are apparently quite a few bugs in Gource still, including the NASTY flickering / jittering you'll see in the source tree from time to time. Directory name highlighting doesn't work when you set it to all, the title highlighting doesn't work on the version I used, but did work on a newer version... etc): [display] viewport=1280x720 [gource] auto-skip-seconds=0.01 camera-mode=overview default-user-image=person5.png font-colour=f3f516 hide=progress highlight-colour=f3f615 highlight-dirs=true highlight-users=true key=true logo=HAIKU logo - white on transparent - small.png seconds-per-day=0.01 stop-at-end=true time-scale=1.2 user-image-dir=/home/justin/haiku/.git/avatar/ user-scale=8 highlight-user=DarkWyrm etc... long list of other users here. :) The video <b>...</b>

These are prototypes produced using Haiku, but are not currently part of Haiku. By James Kim and John Kim. They extended the Auckland Layout Model (ALM), which is a layout manager based on linear programming that has already found its way into the Haiku source tree. They implemented new functionality that allows users to switch a GUI of a running application into an "editing mode", in which a user can modify the GUI using a WYSIWIG editor. A user can customize a GUI on demand, and immediately use it afterwards. The only requirement is that ALM was used as the layout manager. Customized layouts can be loaded and saved using XML files, which can be used on different platforms (Java, .NET, Haiku) to produce the same layout. The example GUI in the screencast consists mostly of buttons, however, the layout manager and editor work with any type of control. James and John have also performed a small evaluation of the prototype, which indicated that many end-users appreciate this new feature.

Fiddling around with Haiku OS. Doing a bit of this and that. Installed on hard drive (not a VM) and I gotta say that it's pretty damn fast. Recorded using BeScreenCapture. Edited with kdenlive in opensuse 11.2. Running on asus m2a-vm mobo and a athlon 64 X2 4000+. Sound didn't work when I ran it, but that's to be expected when few vendors will release drivers for an obscure OS like this.

Here we have the latest version of zeven os, based on a buntu backend but using xfce and the BeOS style, now for me i rather like it and it will not suit everybody but if you want something different but is stable this may be the one for you, and on the plus side because it is buntu based you may not get the feeling of crash as if you had got haiku..(even though i do love haiku). but i will still recommend you all give haiku a go as im sure you will all like it..nuff said.

Well turns out that my dream operating system already existed about 10 years ago. It was called BeOS and it could have been what Mac OS X wanted to be. Apple was going to buy Be Inc. (makers of BeOS) but Be wanted more money than Apple was offering. So Apple bought NeXTSTEP and the rest is history. Unfortunately Be Inc. was bought by Palm then went into bankruptcy. Years later some BeOS fans decided to bring back Be. They started Haiku which is sorta like BeOS only with open source components. I really like it. It's a little slow (I'm running it in a VM) but it's really a good operating system. BeOS was a good operating system that died too early. If it would have survived I believe it would be a serious competitor to Windows and OS X today. What could have been... :( www.haiku-os.org en.wikipedia.org

Load Testing User Responsiveness and Work throughput of CPU and System while under high levels of duress. CPU was intentionally maxed out to show how premptive multitasking and multi threading provide a more user responsive interface while performing lots of work. Test was performed with 3 OpenGL redndered Graphics Applications 2 MP3 player instances playing seperate files 2 video Instances playing 2 different videos Compiling the Operating system itself I also demonstarted how disabling CPU core merely slows the system. It does not lock it up like some other operating systems on the market. It is a streamlined efficient workhorse. We got zero audio distrubance until we got to one cpu core and maniupulated the GUI enviroment. at 2cpu core we got no audio or video clipping even with GUI drawing demands. This OS is the way forward in computing for the user. Please support the Haiku OS by donating your time or money or promoting the OS. www.haiku-os.org
