Hamlet Synopsis with Internet help

This is a short synopsis I did of Hamlet for my Shakespeare class. I did a hastily put together video with some popular internet clips. I wanted to keep it short, but it got rather long. In that vein, all the clips I took are obviously not mine, and you should check them out as most of them came from YouTube itself. If you haven't read Hamlet I recommend you do. There are a great deal of themes that run through that play, and it is a very interesting (albeit long) read.

That's why one of Shakespeare's themes in "Hamlet" is the mystery of death. Does Hamlet solve the mystery? Watch this 60second Recap® ... and learn.

Hamlet, Act 2, Scene 2, Part 1

Synopsis: King Claudius and Queen Gertrude enlist the help of Hamlet's old schoolfellows Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to spy on Hamlet and find out the cause of his madness. In the meantime, the ambassadors Cornelius and Voltimand return from Norway with news that Fortinbras no longer has plans to attack Denmark. Then, Polonius reveals his theory that Hamlet's madness is due to the rejection of his love by Ophelia (at the bidding of Polonius). The first song is "Isfahan" by Duke Ellington. The second is "Caravan" by Duke Ellington. The third is "Caprice Number 14" by Paganini. The fourth is "Caprice Number 18" by Paganini. Happy Valentine's Day, 2010!

Hamlet, Act 3, Scene 2, Part 1

Synopsis: Prince Hamlet instructs the actors who are about to reenact the alleged murder of his father, telling them to act naturally. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern drop in, and Hamlet tells them to fetch the rest of the audience. Horatio drops by, and Hamlet lets him know that Horatio is really, truly his best friend, and asks him to keep a special eye on King Claudius to see if Claudius betrays guilt during the murder scene. The audience comes in. Hamlet is still bitter over the breakup with Ophelia and behaves in quite a mean fashion, still acting like a madman. The play-within-a-play begins with a pantomime. The first song is "Polonaise Brillante Op. 3" by Frederic Chopin. The second song is a snippet from Mozart's "Piano Concerto No. 20 in D Minor - I. Allegro". The third song is Chopin's Butterfly Etude. The fourth song is "At the Picture" by Charlie Chaplin, taken from the soundtrack to Modern Times. The pantomime is intended as a homage to Charlie Chaplin, quite possibly the greatest filmmaker of all time! Remark: Includes famous speeches such as "Speak the speech I pray you" and dialogues such as "Lady, shall I lie in your lap?"

Hamletmachine was written by Heiner Muller. This play is absolutely insane, and is only eight pages long! Anybody who is interested should check it out just so you can understand the insanity I am talking about. This was my final independent project for my college script analysis class. My professor actually wanted to use it as an example for future students! So yeah, I got an A.

Hamlet, Act 1, Scene 2, Part 1

Synopsis: King Claudius gives a speech to the Danish court regarding the death of his brother, the late King Hamlet, and his own marriage to Hamlet's widow, Queen Gertrude. As he talks to various members of the court, they receive him well, until he addresses Prince Hamlet, son of the late king. Still mourning his father's death, Prince Hamlet cannot pretend to be happy, and as the court disbands, he begins to meditate on his discontent. Special thanks to Claudio Meneses for one of the paintings. The first song is "Moonlight Serenade" by Glenn Miller. The second song is Paganini's "Caprice No. 24." Remark: Notice Claudius' callousness in his line, 'But you must know, your father lost a father,' since that father is in fact his own father.

Then Rosencrantz and Guildenstern walk by and begin trying to figure out what's going on with Hamlet. Includes famous lines, "There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so." "Though this be madness, yet there's method in it." "What a piece of work is a man!" And others... The first piece is "Caprice No. 18" by Niccolo Paganini. The second piece is one of the Caprices by Paganini, but I'm not sure which one. The third piece is "Caprice No. 1" also by Paganini. KILL JOY (FULL MOVIE)

SYNOPSIS: On routine patrol through a small Iraqi hamlet, a convoy of US Army vehicles is suddenly ambushed. Private McKay, the squadron's newest recruit, finds himself thrust unexpectedly into his first ever combat experience. His ears ring from the shrieking of exploding shells, but McKay hesitates to return fire. In a matter of seconds his understanding of warfare is forever changed as he raises his gun and unloads on the target. An epic film about the war in Iraq, the film is basically about the danger of socialization, the power of social change, and the effects of warfare on our veterans. While there have been countless war films in the past, Kill Joy seeks to present an unbiased glimpse into the lives of those fighting in Iraq. As an objective film that seeks to neither glorify nor condemn the US invasion, it hopes to encourage viewers to think about their world view and challenges them to make their own mind about armed conflict on a very real, applicable level. DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT: Soldiers are often not understood. Our film, Kill Joy, seeks to provide you with a glimpse into a day in the life of an ordinary US Army private and how he has to come to terms with killing for the first time. The film is about how males in America are brought up and socialized to kill, and how traumatizing killing someone can be for the men and women serving in our armed forces. Hamlet Unbound (2012) Trailer of the Brechtian adaptation by Hugo Santander

Hamlet is a Colombian-born adapted son tortured by guilt by the mining enterprises of Elsinor Inc, his family company, in Latin-America. The film opens with Hamlet attempting to commit suicide from the roofs of Temple University in Philadelphia. The cadences of to be or not to be are then delivered in Spanish with English subtitles. Under the direct influence of surrealism, Santander makes use of dreams, intertitles and multiple voices in order to underline the inner worlds of the characters. Hamlet is a melancholic figure tortured by the death of his father in a godless era, or, as he says: "Nothingness is our fashion, mother." The original script was written while Hugo pursued his MFA in Film & Media Arts at Temple University. "I wanted to adapt and direct Shakespeare's Hamlet since I was 18. Kenneth Branagh's literal adaptation of 1996 was only an obstacle at my university, where they couldn't understand why a Latin-American artist was attempting to adapt an English classic in the United States. Since the 90s American scholars are obsessed with racial or ethnographic identity: a sociological issue that constraints freedom of thought. At the end I was fortunate enough to find a devoted group of reliable, talented actors. We shot the film in a shameless filmmaking guerrilla style during weekends for almost six months. In fact, we never asked permission to shoot on streets, public buildings, parks and cemeteries." The project underwent several changes for 14 years. It was <b>...</b>

Hamlet, Act 1, Scene 1

Complete and unabriged! Synopsis: Danish castle guardsmen Marcellus and Barnardo have been seeing a ghost every night for the past few nights. They invite the skeptical scholar Horatio to confirm the sighting. The ghost bears a striking resemblance to the dead king Hamlet. The companions discuss, among other things, the fact that Denmark is preparing for a possible invasion by the Norwegian prince Fortinbras, who wants to gain back lands lost by his father. The companions decide to tell the Danish prince, also named Hamlet, about the ghost sighting. The first two musical pieces are from the Romeo and Juliet ballet by Sergei Prokofiev. The first one is called "Death of Tybalt" and the second one is called "Dance of the Girls With Lilies". The third piece is called "Aquarium" from the Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saens. The fourth piece is called "Morning" by Grieg.

Hamlet, Act 2, Scene 2, Part 4

Synopsis: At Hamlet's request, the head actor in the troupe performs a speech depicting the killing of Priam, King of Ilium (Troy), during the Trojan War by the Greek Pyrrhus. Then he goes on to describe the lamentation of Priam's queen, Hecuba. Hamlet asks the actors to put on a play called "The Murder of Gonzago" the following evening. As the actors are leaving, Hamlet asks the head actor to perform some extra lines he will insert into the play. After everyone leaves, Hamlet meditates on his own inertia towards his father's murder, in contrast to the head actor's intense emotional identification with the fictional character of Hecuba. He is still not convinced that the ghost is telling the truth, however. So he decides he will test King Claudius by having the play resemble the death of his father. The first piece is from the Polovtsian Dances from "Prince Igor" by Alexander Borodin, performed by the Sofia National Opera Chorus and Orchestra. The second piece is "O Fortuna" by Orff from Carmina Burana. The third piece is Caprice No. 14 by Niccolo Paganini. The fourth piece is Caprice No. 5 by Paganini.

Act III, Scene 1 (Part 1)

Act III, Scene 1 is a modern reworking of William Shakespeare's Hamlet. It abstracts, contemporizes, and condenses elements of the play into a short film with its focus trained on Act III, Scene 1: the crucial exchange between Hamlet and Ophelia. Synopsis: A young prince embarks on a path of vengeance, sacrificing an authentic "romantic love" for a lofty idealism, driving himself and his lover insane. Last Wave's revision uses the classical tale of Hamlet to contemplate domesticity, anthropology, power dynamics, gender roles, politics, etc.; and ultimately to tell its own story.
