This is an experiment I did with the Electro-Harmonix Harmonizer/Vocoder...the female-sounding backup vocals and harmonies were also done with the preset harmonies on the EH 256-band Harmonizer/Vocoder. I am using an old Casio SK-1 sampling keyboard to control the vocoder, and a Shure Beta 58 mic for the vocals and the formant control of the EH Harmonizer/Vocoder. It was my first experience ever using a vocoder, and it was incredibly simple to use. I was impressed with the performance of the new EH device and I highly recommend it for home recording and/or live performances. It is a high-quality device and tracks very well, and it was designed by the same person at EMS who made vocoding famous. This was recorded on a BOSS BR1600CD unit, and the "Seinfeld" sounding bass was provided by a preset on the Yamaha DTXPressIII electric drum kit. I used a 1981 Ibanez musician guitar (direct, no amplifier) and utilized the built-in guitar effects on the BOSS recorder. This was written, arranged, performed and recorded by me in my living room over the course of about 2 hours. It may sound cliche, but Machine Gun Kelly is an artist who marches by the beat of his own drum. Big Beatles fan, I'm from their time, lapped up all those Beatles albums until they turned grey (those of my time understand this). This song takes me back to an unrequieted love, I longed for this person I used to dance with, but that was a long time ago. I recorded this version two or three years ago with some other Beatles songs. All A cappella. I did not use a harmony machine, just recorded the vocals, then over recorded harmonies (in the old fashioned way) That is what puts the "humanity" into it. I am all for tech gear and fun with recording, but there are times to just let the voice do its own thing.

This is a Serge Creature controlled by audio from a Korg Kaossilator. There is also some weird vocoded vocals via Electro Harmonix Voice Box. The carrier wave for the vocoding came from the Creature's left oscillator, and was recorded at the same time as the beat and the video; I did some cutting and pasting, but I tried to keep the 3 tracks (vid, vox, Creature) together throughout the video. I don't really like the song but I posted it anyway; I'm using terrible software, and I'm tired of working on it.
