Hauppauge HD PVR This is a great card...works straight out the box, no need to upgrade you're computer, as long as you have one of the newer ones, not one from 5 years ago, because all the encoding is already done by the product, not our computer. The downfall of this card is that it only has Component connections; therefore; limiting it's quality of the recorded footage. Pros: -Works right out the box -Doesn't need an extremely powerful computer/Works for PC and Mac -Ability to play Xbox 360 without turning on your computer(not 100% sure but it looks like it since the HD PVR has its own power adapter) Cons: -Component cables -No support or future support for 1080p/Resolutions only up to 1080i Blackmagic Intensity Pro The next best thing, I believe this card is better than the HD PVR for many reason, first being that it is an HDMI card and HDMI is better than component. I know people will say, for youtube, there no/minimal difference in quality between these cards, but in actuality, it is better. Component cables are maxed out on what it's capable of doing; however, HDMI is still expanding. The downfall of this card is, it is an internal card, only used for Desktop computers, NO LAPTOPS. Works with both Mac and PC. You do need to have the program up and your computer running in order to see picture on your TV but that can be fixed by buying an HDMI splitter. REQUIREMENTS: (HD PVR capture card) You will need an HD Television. You will also need a computer with a duel core CPU and at least 256MB of graphics memory. My computer only has a single processor and i had to recently buy a new graphics card with a 256MB graphics card. My computer struggles with a single processor, but it manages lol. CAPTURING: The cheap option is a 'Dazzle Video Creator (Platinum Edition)'. The more expensive option is a Hauppauge HD PVR: www.hauppauge.com EDITING: The HD PVR creates M2TS Files which can only be recognized by very few editing programs. Sony Vegas Pro 8.0c will recognize the files, but any previous version will crash when you import these files. I had sony vegas 8.0a and i had to upgrade to 8.0c. FLICKER PROBLEM: The Hauppauge HD PVR latest editions will sometimes flicker while filming. This makes them totally unusuable. To fix this, you must uninstall all the software and drivers you installed; and then re-install the older version drivers. Don't ask me why, but it works! Unboxing and look at Hauppauge WinTV NOVA-TD-500 Dual DVB-T Freeview Digital TV Tuner which I purchased from Amazon for £55. Dual DVB-T Tuners allow you to record one program and watch another, or even record two different programs at the same time. The card and remote worked out of the box with MythTV in Mythbuntu 11.04, unfortunately it was slow at changing channel. Using it in Windows 7 it was far quicker at changing channel, however that one single advantage was far outweighed by many disadvantages such as: no simple EPG, remote not compatible with other applications, slow bootup, etc... This was for a HTPC that I built for one of my mates. So a lot of people were asking if there was a difference in quality and all that jazz between my new capture card and the old one (which many people use). So I did this video showing comparisons in resolution and then the color and detail. Personally I think the IP is better then the PVR as far as picture quality goes. Everything is sharper and not smudged out like the PVR. Also the colours are a lot more vivid and true to what they are actually supposed to be. Here's the bottom line though, if you have a PVR and are happy with it... then I don't see a need to upgrade. I did the upgrade just cause I have a new computer and it works a lot better with my video editing workflow. Essentially with the capture card I have less steps needed to get the highest quality video. However it comes at a cost... about 1GB/min of video. Yes, a PC or laptop is required to use HD PVR. The PC is used to both run the HD PVR application plus is the place where HD PVR recordings are stored. HD PVR does not have any internal disk storage. HD PVR connects to a PC or laptop computer through a USB 2.0 port. The HD PVR recordings are stored on the PC's disk drive. Can I connect the HDPVR passthru cables to a standard TV? No, the pass thru cables only work on a TV with Componet input (Red, Green, Blue) you can not connect using the Composite (yellow) standard definition input on the TV. Can I use HD PVR with a Mac? There are several third party applications which support HD PVR on a Mac. These applications are sold separately. One of them can be found at: www.hdpvrcapture.com. System Requirements When you playback an HD PVR recording on your PC screen, you need a fast CPU and at least 256MB of graphics memory. By connecting the Component video output from your high definiton cable TV or satellite TV set top box to the component video inputs of the HD PVR, you will be able to record the TV programs coming from your set top box to the hard disk.
