The Healthcare IT Path Forward

As you know, this as a pivotal time to address the goals of expanding access, improving quality and reducing cost in our healthcare system. But how can your collective investments in infrastructure and improved processes help to deliver on these goals. How do you fit in? Clearly a road map would be highly beneficial. To help guide this process Intel is doing some radical rethinking of the healthcare system. Intel is committed to shifting the focus of healthcare reform from a one-size-fits-all, institutional model to a personalized model that improves both the process and the outcomes for healthcare practitioners and patients. After all, healthcare is a knowledge industry. Technology should help us share that knowledge effectively. Meet Dr. Mark Blatt, director of Intel's Health and Healthcare Industry Solutions.

Perspectives on Watson: Healthcare

Medical records, texts, journals and research documents are all written in natural language -- a language that computers traditionally struggle to understand. The ability to deliver a single, precise answer from these documents could go a long way in transforming the healthcare industry. Watson, the IBM computing system designed to play Jeopardy!, could deliver such a solution. Thought leaders including Dr. Herbert Chase, Professor of Clinical Medicine at Columbia University School of Physicians and Surgeons, share their thoughts on how the DeepQA technology that powers Watson could impact the way doctors diagnose and treat patients. Death By Deletion, Adventist Health System IT Whistleblower Patricia Moleski Speaks Out

Death By Deletion, Electronification, Healthcare And The Adventist Health System/Cerner Cover-up A major issue for public health and safety in the US and internationally is the manipulation of electronic medical records by the corporations to limit their liability for malpractice on patients and injured workers who are entitled to workers compensation. The Adventist Heath System according to former Adventist Health System IT worker Patricia Moleski illegally manipulated their records to limit liability and violated privacy laws and other protections. She also discovered that due to a glitch in the electronic system at Adventist Health System improperly gave drug injections and these were leading in some cases to the deaths of patients. This was also covered up by the company according to Moleski. Moleski went under cover with the FBI to expose the Federal and State crimes and later came under physical attack herself and her family when her home was shot at and her car was firebombed. www.youtube.com www.youtube.com Although this information has been provided to members of Congress and Senator Charles Grassley as well as Attorney General Eric Holder no action has been taken both to protect Patricia Moleski and prosecute blatant violations of the law. The Cerner corporation was aware of glitches in their electronic system but did nothing to rectify these serious systemic problems in their electronic system and the possible dangers to the public. RIBA-II healthcare robot now stronger, smarter - still a bear

www.plasticpals.com The researchers at Riken and Tokai Rubber's joint laboratory RTC (RIKEN-TRI Collaboration Center for Human-Interactive Robot Research) haven't been twiddling their thumbs since the unveiling of the nursing assistant robot RIBA (Robot for Interactive Body Assistance, which was itself an upgrade of Riken's RI-MAN). They've announced a new version of the robot, which is even better at picking up and carrying bedridden patients of up to 80kg (176 lbs), which is 19kg (41 lbs) more than the first RIBA could handle.

Adorable Puppy Explains Health Care Bill

In which John offers a summary of the health care reform bill that just passed the US senate, discussing the insurance exchange market, pre-existing condition clauses, medicare taxes, and other fine points of the still-under-debate bill. Here's a good explanation of how the insurance exchanges will look like: bit.ly Thanks to Alan Lastufka ( youtube.com ) for the Ben Nelson asshat photo. About abortion: The senate plan works like this: Policies covering abortion would be available in the exchange market (at least in some states), but those plans would have to collect two separate premiums--one covering everything other than abortion, and one for abortion coverage. The subsidy (available to all families making less than about $88000 a year depending on number of kids) would only apply to the non-abortion policy. If this seems like a hilariously stupid distinction, that's because it is. Ultimately, it of course doesn't matter which policy the subsidy goes toward. But then again, every federal program "supports" abortion in some way. For instance, without federally funded highways, it would be impossible for most women to get abortions. All government spending indirectly goes to support all activity in America, but it's ridiculous to say that, for instance, food stamps encourage meth use, even though sometimes people trade meth for food they bought with food stamps. It's equally disingenuous to say that this bill will allow federal funding of abortions, unless you're willing ...

John Stossel: Why Healthcare Costs So Much

John Stossel makes a good case in that we should pay for own healthcare. It would actually be cheaper and force prices down. Medical procedures not covered by health insurance like lasik eye surgery are getting cheaper. Is Ron Paul correct when he says we should try a more free market approach to healthcare.
