Herring Gulls Mating

April 27, 2009: The Herring Gull, Larus argentatus, is well known along the shores of Asia, western Europe, and North America. The Herring Gull should not be confused with the Silver Gull, Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae. The Herring Gull is called the silver gull in many other languages: German Silbermöwe, French Goéland argenté, and Dutch zilvermeeuw). The Herring Gull, perhaps the most common and familiar gull of the northeastern United States and western Europe, is a large white-headed gull that inhabits shorelines of oceans, seas, lakes, and large rivers. The behavior and ecology of the Herring Gull are well studied, especially in Europe and Canada. Although this species is an opportunistic feeder, most individuals feed primarily on natural prey such as marine fishes and invertebrates. Studies from Europe and North America indicate that individual gulls specialize in their foraging and that choice of diet influences breeding performance. This species generally nests in colonies, often large ones; successful nesting appears to require sites near water and safe from terrestrial predation, sites such as islands, offshore rocks, or abandoned piers. This gull typically lays three-egg clutches in May, which generate fledged offspring by mid- to late July. Herring Gull (Larus argentatus) with extra dark upperparts

The rather dark upperparts on this argentatus indicate together with the reduced amount of black markings on the outer primaries that the bird most likely comes from the northeastern most populations of argentatus. The still photos give a wrong impression of the darkness of the back whereas the video illustrates the colours more realistic.
The Herring Gull

In Canada, most seagulls are Herring Gulls (Larus argentatus). The adult Herring Gull is about 61 cm long from the tip of its bill to the tip of its tail. Its head, body, and tail are white, its bill is yellow with a red spot on the lower tip, and its legs are pink or flesh-coloured. The backs and upper wing surfaces of adult gulls are grey, and the tips of their outermost flight feathers are black with a white spot. In winter, the heads of adult gulls are streaked with brown. Immature birds are a mottled brown and take four years to develop full adult plumage.
More herring gull chicks

peplers.blogspot.com Here's some more video of the recently hatched Herring Gull chicks. You get a proper view of them this time, and they look very cute when they hurry to huddle underneath their parent's wings.
Rescuing a herring gull

peplers.blogspot.com This herring gull got stuck in a balcony and I had to climb up a ladder to catch it and get it out of there. This happens once every week or two at our house, or the neighbouring houses. The hard bit is when it happens at a house where there's nobody in, as you have to go up a ladder rather than coming out of the balcony doors.
Hornby R2805XS LNER A4 No. 4466 'Herring Gull' WITH SOUND (Part One)

This is a short video showing the Hornby R2805XS LNER A4 'Herring Gull' with sound running on a rolling road. It's not intended to record the whole range of different sounds available but to give an idea of the overall quality of locomotive sound and how it is synchronised to the speed of the loco. Herring Gull is entirely recorded using the default Hornby sound-chip settings and is under the control of a Gaugemaster Prodigy Advanced 2 controller which can be seen operating in the video. As with previous Hornby sound fitted steam locomotives, the speaker is mounted facing downwards beneath the coal space in the tender with the sounds emitted through the wheel spaces either side of the axle keeper plate. Remember, it is not possible to give an accurate representation of the sound quality from my home video camera and it is recommended that before making any purchasing decisions you listen personally to a demonstration of the locomotive in operation at your local model shop.

LNER Class A4, 4466 'Herring Gull' with DCC sound

Here is class A4 4466 'Herring Gull' in DCC sound. At last a sound steam engine has been added to the collection of the model trains I have. Also there are 2 DCC sound diesals and I may do a video on them. This video is really the friat run of the engine. ^^ I'm soo happy with this engine and the sounds are awesome, me and my dad hope to get another steam to add to the ever growing collection. Now I know I said I was going to put a video up next showing the model project that I have done but I really wanted to make a video of the new engine. Like the diesals I don't know whether or not to have them in my series. In January 1944 'Herring Gull' was re-named as 'Sir Ralph Wedgewood' after sir ralph had been condemned after suffering serious bomb damage in a bomb raid in 1942, but most of us may know this information after seeing the awesome British railway series by simierski. This is the frist time I had used the new camera to flim with the lights on in my room and I do think that the video came out good. Next (may be) the 2 lights and sounds diesals (well of them has lights on) that me and my dad have, or it could be my frist model project what ever comes frist^^. I hope you enjoy this video and more of my thomas videos will be soon. please comment and please make it a good on, if not it will be removed. if you are new to my series please sub^^ I would be very greatful, Also please give it a good rating^^. thank you once again and more videos soon. Hornby 'Herring Gull' in action on the Selby Garden Railway

I've made my comments concerning the disappointing sound quality of Hornby's LNER A4 No. 4466 'Herring Gull' previously so now it's time to see just what she sounds like in action. Indoors on a rolling road setup this A4 certainly doesn't impress me - in fact at high speed it sounds horrid - so how will it perform outdoors on the Selby Garden Railway? Well, if you can spare the next 6 minutes to watch this video you'll see 'Herring Gull' in action first without digital sound. I thought it best to clear all thoughts of sound from your head and get you used to watching a standard non-sound loco. After 2 minutes of non-sound action you'll then be introduced to Herring Gull's digital sound in operation outdoors and I have to agree that it performs better than I was expecting. Traction wise there is work to do as this loco (at only 305 grams) struggles on the Selby garden Railway with anything above six coaches. The addition of more weight to the loco will be of benefit and hopefully allow me to add at least an additional 2 coaches. With quite a bit more work there's a chance that I might yet have a sound-fitted A4 that sounds acceptable and that can haul a reasonable number of coaches. Fingers crossed!

Hornby R2805XS sound fitted 'Herring Gull' - (Part Two)

This short video filmed on a rolling road shows the difference in the chuff rate between the default factory sound chip settings of the Hornby LNER A4 'Herring Gull' and one in which CV 57 has been changed to a value of 42 to give a more prototypical 6 beats per driving wheel revolution. Herring Gull is going to require a lot more tweaking before it sounds and performs remotely like an A4.

Herring gulls breaking open mussel shells by dropping them onto stone beach

This was at Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, UK. The gulls were carrying the mussels from where they had been exposed by the tide going out to the beach and using it as an anvil. An example of tool use in birds?
Herring Gull chicks hatched out

peplers.blogspot.com I think these chicks have hatched in the last couple of days. You can only just see them peeping out once or twice from under their parent, who's holding their wings to make a wall to keep them in. Interesting that when it stands up, you can't see the chicks - I'm guessing they're keeping down low, as you can see the parent peer down at them.
Bringing Up Baby Herring Gull

On June 3, 2008 I spotted a pair of Herring Gulls on the roof of a building across an alley from the parking deck where I kept my car. I Spotted the nestling on June 20th. This is just a little look at how quickly they grow. June 20th I spot the chick and 3 weeks later it appears to be full-size (although still a little 'downy' in the feathers)

A herring gull kill at South Side, Nova Scotia, clearly shows the negative effects of processing herring roe for sushi and other nasty products. Notice the skeletons of other gulls killed in past gull kills. Please never eat herring roe or fishsticks to help save herring gulls and other marine life. Help COHPS help our ocean inhabitants. Hybrid Glaucous-winged Gull x Herring Gull

This gull was video-scoped at Sue's Ponds, near the Logan Landfill, in Cache County, Utah on 19 October 2008. Most of the other gulls in this shot are California Gulls. There may be a Ring-billed Gull or two somewhere in the background. This bird was initially identified as a Thayer's or Glaucous-winged Gull but the expert consenus seems to be that it is a hybrid between a Glaucous-winged Gull and a Herring Gull, also known as a Cook Inlet Gull.

Feeding Herring Gulls

There's a strong wind coming over my right shoulder, so the birds are flapping their wings to hold themselves still. Taken on a Sony 6mp digital stills camera with video mode. Frame rate is a bit too slow for what I'm trying to achieve, really, but the sharpness and focus are nice I think. They're Herring Gulls (Larus argentatus) and the one actually taking the food still has juvenile markings.
Herring Gull bathing in a shower cabin

This is a rescued juvenile Herring Gull. The bird was malnourished and injured when it arrived at our house. Gulls really enjoy bathing a lot and if you dont provide them with a suitable bath, they will try to wash themselves in their water bowls, splashing it all over.

Gullage : The Herring Gull

The commonest of the gulls in the UK. Seen in every seaside resort. These were spotted in Denbigh , North Wales on 8th February 2009 , about 12 miles inland , a sign that there is some bad weather on its way. Noisy and bullying , these birds circled aggressively in search of scrappage.
