Briefing: Katrina vanden Heuvel on Class Warfare from the Top Down

Class warfare is not, as John McCain would have you believe, overturning Bush's tax cuts for the rich. "Class warfare is when you have corporations sitting on $1.8 trillion," says Katrina vanden Heuvel. While the economy stagnates and our infrastructure crumbles, Bush's breaks for the wealthiest Americans are doing far more harm than good. But what is Obama doing about it? "The spine of this White House," says vanden Heuvel, "is wobbly." Meanwhile, the real class war is happening in the same direction it always has—from the top down. When people like Elizabeth Warren are demonized and deficits are a point of obsession, it's not the rich who have to worry. Vanden Heuvel joins The Nation on GRITtv to explain why the Obama administration continues to defend the rich to the detriment of the rest of the country.

Katrina Vanden Heuvel on Osama bin Laden's killing

With Bin Laden being slain after years of a war in Afghanistan, will the death of the al Qaeda leader change anything for US foreign policy? "Let us hope it will," says Katrina Vanden Heuvel, editor of The Nation. Speaking with RT, Heuvel says lawmakers should use this opportunity speak out to the public and realize that there is no rationale for American occupation of Afghan. Katrina vanden Heuvel & Melissa Harris-Lacewell: The Year of the Woman?

The victories of Carly Fiorina and Meg Whitman in California, Sharron Angle in Nevada, and Nikki Haley in South Carolina in last week's primaries are being hailed as a victory for women. Yet do conservative, anti-government women's candidacies spell gains for women nationwide? Or will the cuts they threaten to make to government programs hurt more women than their candidacies help? To kick off our new Monday collaboration with The Nation magazine, we are joined in studio by editor and publisher Katrina vanden Heuvel and columnist Melissa Harris-Lacewell, who break down the election results, the real history of these faux populists, and also report back on a Nation investigation in New Orleans that has led to indictments.

Corey Heuvel - Queenstown

Facebook: www.facebook.com Website: www.coreyheuvel.com Myspace www.myspace.com This is a new song I wrote a few months back, entitled "Queenstown". I don't write many traditional "love" songs because I never like how they turn out, but this one is bearable at least ;). I hope you guys enjoy it. There may be an album in the near future with this song as well as "Beautiful Slide" and "Sage Trees"... I'm currently in the recording process so stay tuned! Here are the lyrics: Out in the woodlands where we used to play She saved me from lions I couldn't keep away And I'd be cryin' til she'd say "hey, hey, hey"... I still remember we'd meet by the sign And walk away together as years would climb I saw in her eyes that she was mine, all mine If I had known the light would go so soon If I had known, I'd given up to you If I had known... Out in the moonlight with our backs to the dawn She tells me her troubles and that she'll soon be gone She's leaving for Queenstown the next train on The next train on... If I had known our midnight glow was through If I had known, I'd given up to you If I had known... Don't slow down, this I know You'll make Queenstown your home This I know... This I know... I know, I know...

Corey Heuvel - The New

www.facebook.com www.coreyheuvel.com http This is title track from my latest album "The New" and one of my proudest moments as a songwriter. I wrote it when I was 16 years old and going through quite a fit of despair. I didn't realize at the time that it would mean so much to me over the years in learning to overcome the absurdity of this world and to embrace life at its every moment. I hope you enjoy it and maybe it will mean something special to you as well. Here are the lyrics: Walk me to the sun Please let me see inside Such power can't be spied alone Shadows cast pale upon me While blacker than night on you What's more to you Leave me hear for now My light be taken someday I'll go when I know I awake again Let me soar through the ceiling of love Where rich glow makes my healing so true Its pulling from my heart Its draining all of me from here Staining the fall of thee so clear May I see your blue How is your green and red Please tell me what they said to you After all the dawns We are but pieces and pawns Searching for the new Its pulling from my heart Its draining all of me from here Staining the fall of thee so clear The wait is none The pain is undone My search for the new has begun Awake, awake, awake again.

Korb vs. vanden Heuvel: More or Less Troops in Afghanistan?

Go to: rethinkafghanistan.com We're thrilled to say that over 460 people submitted topics for the Afghanistan debates between The Nation's Katrina vanden Heuvel and Lawrence Korb of the Center for American Progress. We received questions on everything from costs of war to regional diplomacy to the damage caused by predator drones. Now watch the first of these three debates, in which vanden Heuvel and Korb debate whether additional troops will create more terrorists or be effective in combating terrorism. It's clear from seeing all of these submitted topics that people have serious concerns about the war in Afghanistan, which they have been largely unable to voice until now. These critical questions must be posed to Congress, and we have made it easy for you to record your questions for Congress to address in oversight hearings. We will compile these video questions on DVD and deliver them to Congress to make your voices heard. Go to rethinkafghanistan.com

Please check out the recorded version on myspace. The song is divided into two sections, the first being a kind of reflection and prayer, the second being an action and escape. Here are the lyrics for anyone who's interested: Safe inside the dark wood On a summers night My captors are closing in Both silhouette and shadow Pull me into sight My wish only to be forgotten In the tire of escape And visionless wander My eyes loft in paradise Between calm and earth My mind grows fonder Until I am ageless and wise Running blind but hoping to find The love I used to know Could this be a crashing sea That will not let me go Oh sage trees who guard the keys And keep my heart on forest floor Take what seems but give me dreams For now and forevermore Oh sage trees - - - I hope you enjoy and feel free to leave a comment :)

Cenk Uygur & Katrina Vanden Heuvel: Obama's 2011 Budget

Listen, our system in many ways is rigged through the power of establishment money, through the lobbyists that swamp DC every day. But, on the other hand, you can provide leadership that lays out a different narrative. Cenk, we`re having this debate about the budget, completely wrong frame, skewed priorities. A budget is not just a set of numbers, it`sa moral document. It is also a reflection of a nation`s values and aspirations. And if we`re a nation that is going to balance a budget on the back of the working class and low income Americans to the benefit of the richest, to the multi- national companies with offshore jobs, then we are a nation different than what we`re seeing in the Middle East, but we are a nation in dire need of our pro-democracy movement to take back this country for the people who have built it, who have made it strong. Take it away from those who brought us the financial crisis which robbed trillions from people who have worked so hard over these last decades....it`s going to require people outside of Washington, working with allies inside. Cenk, you said it earlier, no one in DC cares? There are allies inside this Congress. And we can ally with them to say hey, enough. There is a disconnect between what is going on in Washington and what this country needs.

This is where I'm drawn Then blown out from the wind Oh, am I finally in? Finding it all in too much confusion This beautiful slide too slow If love won't heal my soul I fear this beautiful slide will go This hand on my face reminds me I'm still here Just hold me closer until time disappears Then slowly slipping, I see the only sun But when I touch this light I will be someone If love won't heal my soul I fear this beautiful slide will go Copyright 2009 (SOCAN)
