Education taskforce emphasis on skills

www.ktnkenya.tv The task force on education reforms is recommending a radical shift from emphasis on how many years Kenyan children spend in school, to a flexible curriculum based on what skills the children want to learn. Speaking at the prime minister's office as they presented reports from the Education and Higher Education Ministries, Higher Education Permanent Secretary Professor Crispus Kiamba, proposed that laws establishing universities be consolidated to remove duality in the accreditation and quality of assurance between public and private universities.

TEDxVillanovaU - Michele Pistone - The Future of Higher Education

This talk discusses the future of higher education, which has been based on the same educational model for more than 100 years. But the status quo is about to be disrupted, by the Internet and those educators -- including new competitors -- who would unleash its potential. Higher education institutions at a whole have not adequately recognized the threat to the status quo, or come close to responding adequately to it. In truth, responding adequately will be very difficult, because higher ed face a classic innovator's dilemma. Michele Pistone guides law students as they evolve from student to lawyer at the Villanova School of Law. She founded its current clinical program and is the Director of the Clinic for Asylum, Refugee and Emigrant Services (CARES). Through CARES she and her students provide free legal representation to asylum seekers fleeing persecution, torture, unlawful imprisonment and other forms of mistreatment. Her clinic's clients are survivors of human rights abuses directed at them because of their religion, their political opinions, or other beliefs and characteristics that we as a nation have always sought to protect. Among the clients that she has represented are former child soldiers from Sierra Leone and Uganda; political dissidents from Belarus, Cameroon, and Afghanistan; women's rights activists from Nepal and Kenya; children's rights activists from Peru; and religious minorities from Iraq; among countless others. She is a lifetime learner, always ...

Mitt Romney to students: You're on your own

The Massachusetts decline from 37th to 47th in job growth under Governor Mitt Romney was not just a coincidence - his cuts to job training and higher education helped make Massachusetts less competitive. Now, Romney wants give massive new tax cuts to the wealthiest while making dramatic cuts to job training and higher education on a national level. Even with college costs increasing, Romney bragged about his cuts to higher education and his answer to a student asking aboutaffordability was 'shop around'. Romney's rhetoric on college reflects his priorities and worldview: cutting taxes for the wealthy is more important than investing in an economy that works for the middle class.

Black Studies 'Claptrap' Comments Get Chronicle Of Higher Education Blogger Fired

Via The Huffington Post: "The Chronicle of Higher Education dismissed one of its bloggers after outcry over a blog post she wrote questioning the legitimacy of black studies as an academic discipline. Naomi Schaefer Riley, a lecturer and author who wrote for the Chronicle's blog, Brainstorm, was let go after readers pushed back on an essay she published last week titled "The Most Persuasive Case For Eliminating Black Studies? Just Read the Dissertations." Riley's essay responded to a sidebar of a story in the Chronicle which profiled several up-and-coming black studies scholars in the process of writing dissertations. Riley looked at the titles of the dissertations -- on subjects like the role of race in housing policy and the history of black midwifery in the United States -- and called them "left-wing victimization claptrap." Nearly 6500 people signed a petition calling for her dismissal from the blog...".* Ana Kasparian and Desi Doyen discuss on The Young Turks. *Read more from Gene Demby: www.huffingtonpost.com Watch - Hipster Racism? www.youtube.com Subscribe to The Young Turks: bit.ly Find out how to watch The Young Turks on Current by clicking here: www.current.com The Largest Online New Show in the World.
