The snow fall does not abate. Throughout the night we get another foot of powder snow but we stay warm. I put dogness in a tent with the boys for body heat and she sleeps well there (this is pre-surgery for Allie). I give an insight to again how cheap gear can fail you at the worst possible moment in the process (Target tent). Also I give a reminder how cotton is usually a poor choice for winter backpacking. With the continuing to fall, it becomes a possibility the other adult leader with his car will get stuck in the canyon or slide off a cliff. As such, we skip the BB gun shoot and elect to bug out. Heavy snow and wind ensues as do the hike down and it's all I can do to get any footage of the event. However conditions overall were IDEAL for this instructive outdoor experience for the boys who were man enough to show up for it (others were too scare to come out). It wasn't exactly fun and never really is when snow backpacking (much work) but it builds self-confidence and if you can stay comfortable out here you can do it anywere. Leave the push-button world behind and come on along for a Nutnfancy backpacking trip. It seems like it's always a sacrifice to peel away from the world and make it out to my wilderness places. Messages pile up, phones go unanswered, emails fill the inbox, and careers are put aside for awhile. But it's always worth it and it creates one of those special memorable experiences. I do my best in this series to share it with you. As I mention in many of my vids, a wilderness backpacking adventure is one of my top recommended ways to make memories with your friends and family, instill wilderness confidence, learn about your gear (and yourself), and to "depussify" your children. That's because it's hard work and requires planning and lots of effort. Here we hike in about 7 miles on what soon becomes a snow covered, hidden trail. As shown, wading and post holing through 4 foot snow banks will wear you out, especially at high elevations. The upside to to this difficulty was the complete isolation we quickly achieved on this trip; we saw no one else in the three days we were up there and we owned the basin (though in warmer days this is a very high use area). With a steady but deliberate pace we reach a gorgeous high mountain lake, still partially frozen from the long winter. It is serene and beautiful. On the trail in this Part 1 of "Summer Snow Actual" I discuss trekking poles, backpacks, boots, gaitors, teaching your kids to hike, dog training, and other backpacking subjects <b>...</b>

DECEMBER 22nd, 2011. --- Finally some snow! I took a winter hike out in the Ojito Wilderness and got to enjoy the great outdoors for the 1st time this winter season in the snow! Temprature was about 28F degrees. Elevation: 6300 ft. I was planning on showing what I carry in my day pack, and also show you a dinasaur dig site where the mighty Seismosaurus was discovered, but the mud and snow was too thick on the squishy dirt road to be taking chances getting stuck outside in the middle of nowhere by myself and an approching winter storm chased me off quicker then what I would have liked. Thru-hiker Dusty aka Particle hand-picked the yummiest part of the Appalachian Trail for this tenderfoot to hike for three days and guided us. We hiked in Shenandoah National Park, in Virginia, and we agree this was a perfect spot for a casual hiker to taste almost everything the Trail has to offer, minus the despair. First day, hiked 8 miles from Big Meadows Campground to Skyland, then made friends and got a lift back to the campground. Next day, we drove to and parked at Skyland, and hiked 6 miles to the Byrd's Nest 3 shelter for a backwoods overnight.
