The movie was written by Robert L. A dramatic rescue of a stranded hiker and his dog by firefighters in a steep wilderness area of Lake View Terrace was caught on camera. Authorities say the 19-year-old man was hiking with his father and two dogs in Lopez Canyon when one of the animals slipped down a steep embankment. The dog, named Lola, was apparently chasing a toy, authorities said. The hiker went down after the dog and both became stuck. The teenager's father saw what happened and called for help. About 20 firefighters from the LAFD's urban search and rescue squad responded to the scene. Firefighters initially tried to lift the man and his dog out by helicopter, but then decided to lower the pair to safety, Humphrey said. "Once I got to my dog I'm like, 'Man, there's no way out,'" the teen told reporters after the ordeal. "I'm stuck here now." "My mom started crying, my grandma started crying... Oh, God," Angel Cano, the hiker's nephew, told KTLA. "Everyone's just starting a nervous breakdown." The teen and dog were not injured. The rescue took about 90 minutes and was covered live on KTLA.com.

Optimus newest base-camp box stove, the Hiker + with Nova burner. Been out a few years now but the high costs kept me from purchasing one before now. Picked this one up from ebay. The seller, poor_fish put this brand new Hiker + on my door-step a mere 7 days after pushing the buy it now button. Price was $134 with shipping. (great seller by the way & he's got more of these Hiker + stoves) Can't beat that so I had Inga buy it for me for Christmas. She said are you kidding me? Another stove? So far I am happy with the it. I've ran 2 full tanks through it in testing and it has performed flawlessly (knock on wood). We made espresso this morning and warmed up some home made clam chowder. Yum. I think this will be my new camping & knock around stove. The Nova+ burner is a real cooker. No complaints. The quality seems to be as good as the vintage Hiker 111 Optimus and the modern Nova burner makes this a winning combination. I know allot of the vintage stove purist have been less than enamored by Optimus's newest offerings. I should know I was one of them, but you know what? Things change and 20 years from now people will be collecting and coveting these Hiker +'s. Watch the video and see what you think.

*** Update from eyewitness to event*** Three young hikers climbed over the railing for unobstructed photo of Vernal Falls. The first person, a female, stepped to the water's edge to pose for a photo which was wet smooth granite and slipped into the deeper water. The second person, a male, lunged forward to save the first but encountered the same fate on the wet granite. The 3rd person, a male who was going to take the picture also lunged out in desperation but again slipped on the wet granite surface into the water. Non of the three were in the water for more than 5 seconds before being swept over the falls. As of 7/25 not one of the bodies has been recovered and it assumed they are wedged in the rocks below and will stay that way until the river flow decrease later in the summer and into the fall. Very sad because other hikers behind the railing were yelling at the three individuals to get back behind the railing. :-( The snowpack and resulting snow melt in the Sierras was at a record after receiving more than 800 inches. On top of the snow was a surprising summer rain which made for a spectacular and very dangerous rivers and falls. Here is was we encountered at the Vernal Falls. A couple weeks later new broke 3 hikers when over the falls plunging to their death due to their own stupidity. Apparently three teens and early twenties climbed over the railing to get a picture without the railing in the photo. The wet algae cover nature polish granite was like mother <b>...</b>

Katadyn Water Filter

60's-70's Optimus 111 Swedish military surplus pressure stove. Tutorial on the operation of the old Optimus box stove series. They all work the same so this applies to the 111B white gas, 111C & 111T multi fuels as well as the 8R, 99, 199 and Ranger 10. This particular stove is a Kerosene/Paraffin burner but I can see no difference between it or the white gas/Naptha/Coleman gas burner like in the 111B. So I burn white gas and it seems to work just fine. Coleman fuel is easier to find, burns cleaner and almost as hot as Kerosene so I prefer it. You can buy the latest incarnation of these stoves brand new from A & H packstoves for $199 or a refurb of the older Multi fuel for $120. They are also on ebay brand new for between $140 -170 plus show up at garage/estate sales, camping equipment swap meets for cheap so look for them there and pick up one of these great little "stove in a box" for a song. I have used these stoves since the mid 70's and still have my first 8R purchased new when I started backpacking on my own. That stove still works great and all's I have ever down is minor maintenance. It has literally cooked hundreds of meals and never let me down. I've bought and used many of the newer high tech stoves that have comes along but always gone back to the old Optimus Box stoves. They are built sturdy, reliable and are fairly cheap to buy. I like vintage, old school gear anyway and have collected 4 of these old Optimus stoves. Good luck with finding one for a great <b>...</b>
