Thru-hiker Dusty aka Particle hand-picked the yummiest part of the Appalachian Trail for this tenderfoot to hike for three days and guided us. We hiked in Shenandoah National Park, in Virginia, and we agree this was a perfect spot for a casual hiker to taste almost everything the Trail has to offer, minus the despair. First day, hiked 8 miles from Big Meadows Campground to Skyland, then made friends and got a lift back to the campground. Next day, we drove to and parked at Skyland, and hiked 6 miles to the Byrd's Nest 3 shelter for a backwoods overnight. Next day we hiked 4 miles to the rest area at Thornton's Gap and then caught a ride back to the car at Skyland. Don't miss the famous and delicious blackberry milkshakes in Shenandoah. Hey! I got a chance to get out on the trail again for two nights and had the company of an good ol' friend Wanderin'Fool. Been promising to take him up to one of my favorite sections of trail up on the Superior Hiking Trail in northern Minnesota out of the Finland area. Got to rock in the GrizzBridge hammock...a gift from Grizz himself. We heard a pack of wolves singing like a bunch of bluegrass crooners. The Fall colors were exploding with hues.....still makes me sit and just stare at it. www.mdc.mo.gov Indoors or out...nothing is fun if your feet hurt. And if youre off-road hiking, birdwatching, or simply mushroom hunting...choosing the wrong boots can leave you stranded or lame. Heres what to look for when buying boots First, get real hiking socks and wear them when shopping for boots. Get a pair of liners made of one of the high-tech wicking fabrics that draw the sweat away from your skin. Over the liners, wear outer socks made from midweight or heavy wool or wool/synthetic...even in summer. Do not use cotton liners, which absorb sweat and cause blisters. Look for boot socks with a snug fit and smooth seams. Now for the boots. When theyre unlaced, you should have just enough room so that if you scrunch your toes toward the front, you can squeeze a finger between your heel and the back of the boot. When laced, there should be little or no heel slippage, but you should be able to wiggle your toes freely. Check the flexibility by going up and down steps and ramps making sure your toes dont jam against the front of the boot. Kick the toe box against something hard. Your toes shouldnt feel the impact. Finally, make sure the boots are wide enough. If they arent, special order a wide width, or if youre a woman, try mens boots. Whatever you do, never compromise on fit! Harden your feet and soften your boots before hitting the woods for a shorter version, use the following line and cut the rest of the paragraph: even if the boots you buy are the ultra light kind <b>...</b>

The snow fall does not abate. Throughout the night we get another foot of powder snow but we stay warm. I put dogness in a tent with the boys for body heat and she sleeps well there (this is pre-surgery for Allie). I give an insight to again how cheap gear can fail you at the worst possible moment in the process (Target tent). Also I give a reminder how cotton is usually a poor choice for winter backpacking. With the continuing to fall, it becomes a possibility the other adult leader with his car will get stuck in the canyon or slide off a cliff. As such, we skip the BB gun shoot and elect to bug out. Heavy snow and wind ensues as do the hike down and it's all I can do to get any footage of the event. However conditions overall were IDEAL for this instructive outdoor experience for the boys who were man enough to show up for it (others were too scare to come out). It wasn't exactly fun and never really is when snow backpacking (much work) but it builds self-confidence and if you can stay comfortable out here you can do it anywere. On any long distance hike where you can't carry enough water it's important you have some way of purifying your water. Boiling water is the most reliable way but also the most inefficient and time consuming way. If you don't like the taste of tablets and chemicals, a water filtration system is the next best choice. Reed Lakes is a top notch hike located just an hour north of Anchorage. Whether you're a Photographer or Hiker, this hike offers incredible high alpine terrain, and views that have kept me coming back here for years. Hike details: - 4.5 miles one way - 1850 foot elevation gain from trail head to upper Reed lake. - A solid pair of hiking shoes or boots with good ankle support are required for this hike. - Hiking poles good, but not required. - Varied terrain. Trail is very well established and in good condition generally speaking. First two miles is flat wide and maintained trail, from there you gain elevation quickly navigating boulders and at times slippery mud. It's a good hike, take your time and it's worth the rewards!
