Back in the 70s, Joe Conzos pictures were part of Hip-Hop. 30 years later, his pictures are part of Hip-Hop history. Born February 6, 1963 and raised on the tough streets of the South Bronx, Joe was definitely at the right place at the right time. Strapped with a camera 24/7 during the late 70's and early 80's, he intimately captured the birth of Hip-Hop music and a culture that would forever change the world. Having attended school with some of the pillars of Hip-Hop, such as The Cold Crush Brothers, Joe was never too far from a classic shot. He would go on to be the Crushs exclusive photographer and record some of the most candid and exhilarating moments of the pioneering rap group to date. With the help of True School flyer king Buddy Esquire, those photos and many others would soon grace party flyers and event posters and act as the earliest forms of Hip-Hop marketing and promotion. In addition to the Cold Crush, he documented other legendary Hip-Hop groups like the Treacherous 3, Fearless 4 and Fantastic 5 in famed venues such as The T-Connection, Harlem World, Ecstasy Garage and The Roxy. Many luminaries, like Kool Moe Dee of the Treacherous 3 and Rahiem of the Furious 5 consider Joe to be one of the first Hip-Hop photographers. But Joes photographic contributions to urban culture werent limited to just Hip-Hop. Friedman was going up on the gallery walls, for his first ever career retrospective "Idealist Propaganda." The first episode focused on Fairey's famous Obama poster, the second episode on a collaboration between Shepard and Glen involving the hardcore group Bad Brains. TODAY: we bring you part 3 of this conversation. This episode's all about Glen's early work documenting skateboarder culture, and the beginnings of American hardcore. Below, an image from the very first roll of color 35mm film Friedman ever shot, which he discusses in this video. Also in today's episode: Glen shares the story behind the Circle Jerks "Golden Shower of Hits" album cover, which he also shot. His work was so much a part of these subcultures, which were in turn so much a part of my own formative years -- so this episode means a lot to me. I hope you dig it. "One day a young boy said to me: why dont you photograph graffiti? He opened his note book and showed me his drawings. The minute I understood that there was a systematic designing and painting on the wall I became fascinated." Photojournalist Martha Cooper was one of the first to recognize the creative power of the New York graffiti scene. In the seventies she started photographing the first generation of spray can artists, now three decades later she is called the Grande Dame of Hip Hop Documentation and has produced a series of much celebrated photo books like Street Play and Hip Hop Files. We talked to Martha Cooper about the early days, about the excitement of going into the railway yards at night, about the way graffiti was used as a secret language between the different NY boroughs. The pictures shown during the interview come from her first book Subway Art, which she published together with that other famous chronicler of street life, Henry Chalfant. One of her latest projects is We B*Girlz in which she presents strong, smart, independent B-Girlz and other Hip Hop females as role models for upcoming generations and to show everyone that there is a significant place for women in this worldwide culture.
