Christopher Hitchens - The Best of the Hitchslap

* Part Two is complete - www.youtube.com * Christopher Hitchens at his finest - some of my favorite moments by the writer who has inspired the ideals of skepticism, free inquiry, and rational thought in so many. I believe Hitchslap is now the proper term for the unflinching intellectual prowess displayed in these exchanges.

Christopher Hitchens (1949-2011)

Christopher Eric Hitchens was an English author and journalist whose books, essays, and journalistic career spanned more than four decades. He was a columnist and literary critic at The Atlantic, Vanity Fair, Slate, World Affairs, The Nation, Free Inquiry, and became a media fellow at the Hoover Institution in September 2008. He was a staple of talk shows and lecture circuits and in 2005 was voted the world's fifth top public intellectual in a Prospect/Foreign Policy poll. He was a champion for atheism, skepticism, science, history and common sense. He will be sorely missed.

Christopher Hitchens - The Best of the Hitchslap - Part Two

I have been working on this video for some time, and had planned to upload it today as the rendering completed just yesterday morning. When I heard the sad news of Professor Hitchens' death late in the evening, I struggled with the thought of canceling this upload. It seemed somehow opportunistic to release a video so soon after, even if this coordination was not intentionally planned in advance. The beginning of this video especially carries a different meaning now that this news has reached all of us. In the end, I decided I could cope with this feeling of unease in order to share more of his thoughts, provide a moment of reflection, and pay humble tribute to the man that is an inspiration to me and so many others. If the first video was a general critique of religion, this edition is aimed at responses to common complaints non-believers hear again and again. Mr. Hitchens, your contributions to the struggle for liberty, equality, rationality, and freedom will never be forgotten. Your forcefulness, wit, and intelligence gave me the strength and courage to argue for these ideals in my own life. That you have done the same for so many is your great and immortal contribution to mankind. These seemingly small victories are what change the world; one action, one mind at a time, until the tide cannot be held back any longer. Your actions and words have moved us ever closer to that point. Thank you.

Hitchens on the Catholic Church

One of the great rants by Christopher Hitchens was when he participated in a debate in England put on by the Intelligence Squared organization in October 2009. The subject being debated was: The Catholic Church is a force for good in the world. His opponents were a Catholic bishop from Africa (Archbishop John Onaiyekan) and Catholic MP Ann Widdecombe. Supporting him was Stephen Fry. In fact, this rant has been called his best ever on the subject of the Catholic Church. A version of this video has already been posted on You-Tube, but this video focuses on just this rant by Hitchens.

Christopher Hitchens vs Rabbi Wolpe - Public Debate on God Nov.2008

Christopher Hitchens vs Rabbi Wolpe - Public Debate on God Nov.2008 More than 1500 people went to Temple Emanu-El, one of the largest synagogues in the world, on Wednesday evening for a wide-ranging debate on that age-old question. On one side: Christopher Hitchens, the writer, wit and author of the polemic God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything, published last year by Twelve/Warner Books. On the other side: Rabbi David J. Wolpe of Sinai Temple in Los Angeles, whom Newsweek has called the No. 1 rabbi in America and the author of Why Faith Matters, published last month by HarperOne. Mr. Hitchens took part in a similar debate Is God Great? with the Rev. Al Sharpton in May 2007 at the New York Public Library. The debate with Rabbi Wolpe, while courteous, was at times more heated and more pointed than the earlier encounter, with the writer and the rabbi at times interrupting, and expressing irritation at, each other.

Christopher Hitchens—the incomparable critic, masterful rhetorician, fiery wit, and fearless bon vivant—died today at the age of 62. Hitchens was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in the spring of 2010, just after the publication of his memoir, Hitch-22, and began chemotherapy soon after. "My chief consolation in this year of living dyingly has been the presence of friends," he wrote in the June 2011 issue. He died in their presence, too, at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. May his 62 years of living, well, so livingly console the many of us who will miss him dearly ------ November 2010: Jeremy Paxman talks to the writer, polemicist and commentator Christopher Hitchens at his home in Washington DC about his cancer diagnosis, his life, his politics and writing. He is suffering from cancer of the oesophagus, has described his illness as "a bit of a yawn" and accepted that it is a result of his hard drinking and smoking lifestyle. He has been told that he has only a one in 20 chance of living for longer than five years. He said he was not surprised by the diagnosis, which came earlier this summer, and said: "If you've led a rather bohemian and rackety life, as I have, it's precisely the cancer that you'd expect to get" "I think my main fear is of being incapacitated or imbecilic at the end ...

Stephen Fry & friends on the life, loves and hates of Christopher Hitchens - IQ2 talks

IMPORTANT: This video will not be available to users in the UK and Ireland until February 20. Thank you for your patience. hitchfry.intelligencesquared.com In this historic event, Stephen Fry and other friends of Christopher Hitchens came together to celebrate the life and work of this great writer, iconoclast and debater. Fry was joined on stage at the Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall by Richard Dawkins and the two discussed Hitch's unflinching commitment to the truth. Hollywood actor Sean Penn was beamed in from LA by Google+ and, between cigarette puffs, read from Hitch's acclaimed work, The Trial of Henry Kissinger. Five friends of Hitch spoke via satellite in New York: satirist Christopher Buckley and editor Lewis Lapham mused on Hitch's prowess as a journalist. 'Like a pot of gold', said Lapham. Martin Amis, Salman Rushdie and James Fenton delighted the audience with stories of Hitchens as a young man. Rushdie drew roars of laughter when he recounted a word game invented by Amis and Hitchens where the word 'love' is replaced with 'hysterical sex'. Particular favourites included Hysterical Sex in the Time of Cholera and Hysterical Sex Is All You Need. Watching the event with Hitch at his bedside in Texas, Hitch's wife Carol and novelist Ian McEwan provided an email commentary. 'His Rolls Royce mind is still purring beautifully', typed McEwan. The event was watched live by 2500 at the venue, and by thousands more in UK cinemas and online.

Terry Eagleton slams Christopher Hitchens

Terry Eagleton - British literary theorist regarded as one of Britain's most influential living literary critics. Here he slams & upends the dynamic duo of Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens; whom he endearingly calls "Ditchens." I like the way Eagleton engages in a nuanced take-down of some of the pretenses associated with contemporary atheism. And he focuses in particular on the two most prominent writers within the neo-atheist movement---Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens. Eagleton currently serves as Distinguished Professor of English Literature at the University of Lancaster, and as a former Visiting Professor at the National University of Ireland, Galway. Formerly Eagleton was Thomas Warton Professor of English Literature at the University of Oxford (1992--2001) and John Edward Taylor Professor of English Literature at the University of Manchester until 2008. In the Fall 2009 semester, Dr Eagleton returned to The University of Notre Dame as a Distinguished Visitor in the Department of English. He has written more than forty books, including Literary Theory: An Introduction (1983); The Ideology of the Aesthetic (1990), and The Illusions of Postmodernism (1996).
