HIWATT Custom 50 SA212: Normal, Bright, Bridged and Effects demo (Strat).

Here's a comprehensive demo of the Normal, Bright and Bridged channels along with some effects added (Dice Works Muff and Eventide TimeFactor) at the end. There are two other videos on my channel featuring the SA212, one featuring a Les Paul. These can be found at: www.youtube.com and www.youtube.com The HIWATT Custom 50 SA212 is my new amp of choice and I feel lucky to have it. Now I understand why some of my heroes have sworn by them for many years. The guitar in this video is a modded 2006 Fender Clapton Signature Series Stratocaster. The Noiseless pickups and circuitry has been removed and replaced with standard wiring and Mick Brierley's most excellent hand wound pickups. (See: www.brierleyguitarpickups.com.au/) If you like the sound of these pickups Mick can wind you a set, too. I used an SM57 and Pro Tools 9 to record this video. No extra EQ was added but I did use a Waves L3-16 Limiter to keep levels in check. Special thanks to Carole Johnston at CMC Music Australia. Cheers and thanks for watching.

HIWATT CUSTOM 50 SA212 Combo - General demo (Strat) with and without effects

You won't find many amps that are better built from a commercial custom workshop. The HIWATT Custom 50 SA212 Combo is one of the cleanest, loudest, bell-like and most pedal friendly amps I've ever heard. Hence it has become my choice of amp for 2011 and beyond. I love it and now see why many of my heroes swear by them, too. Here I've teamed the amp up with my favourite Strat (loaded with Brierley Pickups), a Dice Works Muff Diver Finale (part of a custom Dice Works pedal I commissioned called 'The Overture') and an Eventide TimeFactor. I recorded it with an SM57 to ProTools 9 via an M-Audio ProFire 610. No extra EQ was added but a Waves L3-16 was used as a limiter on the master output. This is from a series of videos on the HIWATT Custom 50 Combo that I'll be uploading shortly. Many thanks to Carole Johnston at CMC Music P/L Australia for her assistance. Cheers, Burgs

BearfootFX: HONEY BEE OD (PRS to HIWATT)

www.bearfootfx.com This would have to be one of the most sought after OD's on the planet. After having experienced it for the last couple of weeks I can fully understand why. Bearfoot Guitar Effects is basically the great Don Rusk. BJFe, originators of the Honey Bee OD is one Bjorn Juhl. Together they have teamed up to boost production of the latter's legendary overdrive so that more of us can enjoy it. Here it is. Oh! You'll notice a lovely looking Dyna Red Distortion waiting patiently behind the HBOD; that video is coming next. Cheers, Burg.

Weehbo Effekte: HELLDRÏVE (Les Paul to HIWATT SA212)

www.weehbo.com The HELLDRÏVE is classed by Eike at Weehbo as a low to medium gain dynamic overdrive. And compared to the Weehbo Morbid Drive, it is. However it has a lot of gain on tap and its potent combination of FIRE!, Balls, Input and 5 inner trimpots will give you plenty of scope to tailor your sound. The main thing is, though, that its fundamental sound is killer and the aforementioned controls just let you fine tune it. It's expensive, yes. But the HELLDRÏVE is also handmade in Germany with the attention to detail that is stereotypically expected from that country. The pedal is solid inside and out, looks great and sounds even better. Do I like the Weehbo pedals? Very much. All class and they sound great. Can't argue with that! The HELLDRÏVE is the first of four Weehbo demos that I'll be uploading. The others include the Plexdrive, Morbid Drive and JCM Drive. For this video I miked the HIWATT Custom 50 SA212 with a Violet Design 'The Amethyst' condenser, about 4 inches from the centre of the right speaker. The mic fed an M-Audio ProFire 610. Pro Tools 9 recorded it. On the channel strip I inserted a Waves CLA Guitars plug to bring to you what the mic cannot - thud and the feel of being in the same room as a cranked HIWATT. A Waves L3-16 Limiter was inserted over the Master Output to keep levels in check. That's it. Thanks for watching! BK2011

Tech 21: ROTO CHOIR (PRS to HIWATT SA112)

www.tech21nyc.com What do I think of the Roto Choir? Well, I have one particularly high end Leslie sim at my disposal to compare it to and I have to say that the difference is marginal. This is a versatile, no-fuss and small-footprint solution that won't cost you an arm and a leg. I like it. A lot. From the Tech 21 website "No musician can deny the deep, swirling glory of a vintage rotating speaker cabinet, that uniquely lush, pulsing tone that brings any instrument to life. So, why doesn't everyone use one? Because they are the size and weight of a bulky refrigerator, cost big bucks and are more high-maintenance than a platinum diva. But, imagine getting all of that inspiringly rich modulation with cutting-edge features in a studio-quiet, road-worthy pedal. Just one little pedal. Now imagine you can use that pedal with guitar and to record direct. The Roto Choir recreates both the rotating lower speaker and the treble rotor horn --the only way to attain that complex, multi-dimensional tone. In fact, the Roto Choir utilizes a specifically formulated SansAmp technology to deliver the entire signal chain --from the original tube power amp to the speaker and high-frequency rotor horn, to the microphone used to capture it. This is HD, 3D emulation. The simple controls hide a wealth of options. Drive adds just the right amount of compression, harmonics and grit. Low and High sculpt the tube amp emulation with powerful EQ curves. The Fast/Slow footswitch allows users to ramp up ...

Shine On Blues with my Hiwatt DG-504!!!! PURE HIWATT TONE!!

This is using a backing track that I downloaded from Gilmourish.com. I am playing the lead guitar only. The lead guitar is improvised and sloppy at that. I will not be providing transcriptions. This recorded is PURE Hiwatt tone!!! The signal chain is as follows: Ibanez Artcore (with Dimarzio Humbuckers), Smart People Factory Ego Booster, Hiwatt DG-504, Hughes & Kettner 2x12 w/ Vintage 30's, SM57, Pro Tools. The reason I used a Booster pedal is because Hiwatts are notoriously clean amps and I wanted a little drive without coloring the amp. A booster pedal just sends more signal to the input of the amp and drives the amps own preamp section so you get natural tube drive. A lot of people that use Hiwatts and other amps use booster pedals. Clyde

50 Watt Hiwatt Clone (Weber 6H50)

This is a demonstration of the 50 Watt Hiwatt clone I just finished building from a Weber 6H50 kit. I modified the stock circuit by replacing all the signal capacitors with higher grade Mallory caps. The amp has 4 12AX7 preamp tubes and 2 KT-66 power tubes. The amp is being played through a 4x12 Peavey 5150 cabinet loaded with Celestion G12T-75 speakers. The audio was recorded with an SM57 miking the cabinet and recorded directly into a MOTU Traveler interface. I used a PRS SE Singlecut on the bridge pickup to demonstrate the amp. Please excuse my playing. It's been a while, and I'm a bit rusty. Plus, the guitar does go out of tune in a few spots, so I apologize in advance.

Maxon RTC600 Comp/Limiter - Telecaster to HIWATT SA112

www.maxonfx.com http From the Maxon website: "This new RTC600 Compressor replaces the original Real Tube RCP660 Compressor. The RTC600 is a studio-grade Tube Compressor Preamp in a compact Stompbox format. The RTC600 uses a precision RMS level Detection circuit and high-performance VCA to create a warm yet bold compression sound with ultra-low noise floor. Its five controls can create a wide variety of effects, including "Brick Wall" limiting and "Soft Knee" compression. Every aspect of the RTC600 has been re-thought and redesigned to provide a lifetime of trouble-free performance. The tube position comes pre-compression, adding classic valve warmth without increasing the noise level. As soon as power is applied to the pedal, an In-Rush Current control begins heating the tube at a very low voltage (much like a tube amp standby switch) to dramatically extend tube life. The RTC600 features an internal charge pump circuit that bumps the incoming voltage up to 25 volts, providing massive headroom and full-range frequency response. The RTC600 is perfect for use with any instrument or application and can be sent into an amp's front end, placed in an effects loop, or used as an outboard processor for home recordings. The RTC600's Front-Panel Controls are as follows - THRESHOLD - variable between 0 dBu and 40 dBu, allows the user to select the dynamic level at which the compression kicks in. Freekish Blues: Alpha Drive - Telecaster to HIWATT SA212

www.freekishblues.com 27 June 2011 There is some controversy surrounding this pedal that many of you would be aware of. However, the videos that I've made for the Alpha Drive will remain up for everyone's reference, controversy or no. The hype surrounding this pedal is deserved in my opinion. In the short time that I've had the Alpha Drive it has become one of my top 5 drives. Here it is with a Telecaster to a very clean HIWATT SA212. The sweet 'Dumblish' bits are towards the end after I kick in the Eventide for some space. It has tons of tone shaping capability, versatility, it's built well, has great looks and it's fundamental tone is killer. This one's a keeper for me and can compete easily with the higher end of other great drives I have in my possession. The Diablo can operate in two modes LO and HI. In HI mode you get a less compressed, more dynamic (and louder) sound. This is what you're hearing here. LO mode is great for more distortion due to its extra compression. LO mode may also be better for 'bedroom' level playing whereas HI mode will enable you to roar on stage. I'll take HI, thanks. :) This video was made with a 2006 Clapton Strat fitted with Mick Brierley 'Burgs' Hand Wound Pickups (see: www.brierleyguitarpickups.com.au) and a HIWATT Custom 50 SA212 amp. www.bearfootfx.com This is a very tasty dirt box. It cleans up beautifully when I roll the guitar's volume back and snarls when I dig in. The 'amp-like' description is justified in my opinion. Another winner from BJFe/Bearfoot Effects. From the website: "The Dyna Red is a classic distortion that immediatley sounds familiar. What sets the DRD apart is that it also manages to mimic the FEEL of a healthy plexibasketweaver. While it is known for its crunchy classic rock distortion - it also has a very tasty just above driven sound that really shows off its dynamic abilities. OKKO Dominator High Gain Distortion: Charvel to HIWATT SA212

www.stompbox.de Here's a very quick, no frills demo of the mighty OKKO Dominator. The Dominator is made for serious rock and has great attack, gain and EQ versatility. It's not made for low-gain or medium gain; it's made to crush. In fact, you might notice the picture 'shaking'. This was caused by the sound pressure level in the room when I was recording. It was seriously loud. (Sorry, neighbours!) You'll hear a heap of mid shaping possibilities, helped greatly by the three-way mid frequency rocker switch on the top face between the jacks (very important). Watch the demo just for that bit. I'm using a Charvel Music Zoo Custom Shop Koa H (2010) with an SH-5 in the bridge position and a '59n in the neck position. 81 Hiwatt Custom 50 - Squier Classic Vibe Tele- Weber Mass 200

Just got a Hiwatt this week, a Biacrown from 1981. I changed the resistors on the input jacks to 33k, it was brighter than I like with the 1 megs. I also removed the OL circuit to bring it closer to early 70s specs. I am loving the amp! With a Tele ( Squier Classic Vibe) it is still very crisp, great clarity and punch. The cam mic exaggerates the top end, as it is much fuller sounding than the clip, but you still get the idea. ... Part 1 of my dual demonstration of my Maton MS503 and Hiwatt Custom 20. This part shows clean, and slighty overdiven tones. Maton has been heavily modified to the best of its potential. Lots of tasty upgrades, which I will list below. Hiwatt is handwired in the UK out of their custom shop. All class A, point to point. That is going through a 2x12 Hiwatt cabinet, loaded with 12" Fane speakers. Just a heads up! The first 2 & 1/2 minutes of this video is talking. Just a spiel about the modifications done to the guitar, details about the amp, and recording set up. So if you are one of those who doesnt like talking at the start of demo's - you have been duly warned! =) If you wanna just see the playing, skip to 2:28 Also, the reason why I detail the recording set up, is I myself dont like watching video demos and not knowing how they are recorded - for lots of reasons. And im sure im not alone! Oh, and Ill be the first to admit, Im not a gun guitar player, and this demo isnt about my playing, its all about the tone! So on that note, think twice before verbally abusing my bad playing, etc =) Other than that, enjoy the demo and look up Maton guitars - they are an amazing Australian guitar manufacturer who make world class guitars!
