A fairly in depth look at the NRM Bachmann's City of Truro outside framed 4-4-0 steam locomotive. The model has been out for nearly twelve months and I explain my reasons for not buying one until now.

A look at the collaboration between Hattons and Heljan which has produced the Class 14 "Teddybear" one of which landed here in South East Queenland Australia last Thursday and is now running on my layout. All credit to Hattons and Heljan for producing such an unusual locomotive. Sadly quality control in the Chinese factory seems to be an issue yet again as you will see in this clip. There seems to be a difference between the samples they send for testing and what actually turns up in the box for you and I. If only production could be moved back to Europe perhaps Hornby etc might have more control over the final product. After all if Vitrains can produce competitvely priced Loco's in Italy why can't they. Perhaps when the global economy gets going again this is something that could be seriously considered.

Recent track improvements at Angeltown East and another controller have now enabled me to now run five trains simultaneously. In this clip there are some ariel views of the layout. Three trains run on the larger of the two tables, one on the smaller table on the left and one does a circuit of the whole layout thus making five. Basically the layout is two tables joined at one end by a another table whilst at the other end by way of a bridge which can be opened to allow access whithout having to stoop under all the time which is bad for my back !!

This lovely crystal clear version of "Midnight Shift" by Buddy was recorded in 1956 is a previously unknown take 11. The song was written by Luke McDaniels in 1955. Pure rockabilly this is about as wild a version of any song that Buddy recorded in his short career.

It is unknown wether Mr Bullied knew his creations were called "spam cans" but the air smoothed casing didn't generally stay smooth for very long and many of them were running around with dents and knocks and fire damage as they were prone to catching fire when the oil from the oil bath sprayed onto the casing causing it to ignite. But they were an innovative design way ahead of their time with many advanced (for the time ) features and I love'em ! They were free steaming fast and powerful but prone to massive bouts of slipping when departing even with a light train.

An M7 0-4-4 tank loco with a freight train consisting of six flat wagons returning containers from the Line Bros Triang Toy Factory in Merton. These flat wagonsand containers were based on the actual vehicles used for transporting Triang products from their factories in the 1950's. The inscription on them "return to Wimbledon" sugggests the Merton Factory in particular. These wagons are hard to get now but I recently acquired four to make a total of six and made a worthwhile load for a train on its own. Sadly today all our model railway gear comes from the Peoples Republic of China but one day perhaps it may become economically sound to start manufacturing again in Britain.

A recent aquisition is this Bachmann hand weathered WD austerity 2-8-0 as well as a Lima GWR railcar (nicknamed "flying bananas") we also see another weathered loco this time a weathered Hornby 8F. Look quickly because at the end of the clip is a 3 second out take of a crash while filming featuring a Duchess pacific with eight on !

This layout belonging to a friend is situated in South East Queensland Australia. Based on the Former Midland Region of British Railways it has a huge selection of former LMS and BR standard loco's as well as first generation diesels. It is work in progress. It took us a good part of the day to run all the stock that is on the layout. Most of the loco's are recent Bachmann and Hornby releases. The owner is setting up his own You Tube channel so you will shortly be able to see his layout in much more detail than provided here.

Purchased from the Kernow Model Centre No 129 of a limited run of 250 weathered class 22 diesel hydraulic loco's produced by Dapol exclusively for Kernow. These really are superb replica's of the class with all the running attributes we now take for granted in our models these days. Others have already reviewed this class of loco so I just give a few general comments including the fact it came from the West Country of England to the East Coast of Australia in just four days !!

Hornby's latest model the Brighton Belle is on display here, I make a few comments and we see some shots of the unit circling the layout. At the end of the clip is an old Black and white clip of the Brighton belle from the 1930's. you can see a couple of short colour clips of the Brighton Belle on the superb Southern Railway Films You Tube channel as well.

A short clip to herald the arrival of the new Bachmann 2EPB units which are shown here (I bought 2 two car units to make up a four car set) along with the 4CEP recent release and an old Triang 4SUB unit (has been seen in a previous clip). Also seen is the gunpowder train headed by a Hornby black A1X terrier 0-6-0 (this loco has also been seen before)

Just some trains whizzing round the layout filmed quickly on Easter Monday 2012. However do watch out for the two tender drive Hornby A4's 2511 "Silver King" in prewar silver livery and modified by Peasholme models and 60028 "Sir Walter K.Whigham" in experimental deep blue livery. Both models made at Margate in the 1990's before production was transferred to China and good runners despite the finicky tender drives.

A great away victory for Wimbledon at Anfield on 26th September 1992. The crowd was 29574 and the Wimbledon goals were scored by Fashanu (29) and Robbie Earl (27,76). Wimbledon's team on the day was : Segers,Barton,Skinner,Jones,Scales,Fitzgerald,Ardley,Earle,Fashanu,Holdsworth,Clarke and Sanchez. How much would a player like Robbie Earle be worth today I wonder ? Meanwhile AFC Wimbledon are following in their footsteps and hopefully can consolidate their position in League Division 2 this season. Joe Kinnear was Wimbledon's manager at the time.

A superb version of Bachmann's LNER 2-8-0 O4 in Great Central Livery as commissioned by the National Railway Museum. I was lucky enough to pick this one up on Ebay and thus avoid the extortionate oversea's freight charges to Australia. The previous owner had fitted cab crew and real coal in the tender and I think you will agree the loco looks great in the Great Central livery

From a 1983 live concert in London Billy Joel and Toots Thielemans render a faultless version of the song "Leave a Tender Moment Alone" from Billy's 1983 Innocent Man Album. Enjoy ! Toots is still around and is now 86 years of age, a legend in his own lifetime (as is Billy of course !)

From Billy's "From Piano Man to Innocent Man" tour in London 1984 comes this superb rendition of "Piano Man" complete with Billy playing mouth organ. Billy's voice has never sounded better than this in my opinion. Listen to recent concerts and see how much his voice has lost in tonal quality, hardly surprising considering he has been on road constantly over the last twenty five years. I wasn't going to release this clip but decided too as it was only one and a half minutes long. It is my first attempt to use Corel Studio after getting thoroughly fed up with Windows Movie Maker and Movavi 9.0 neither of which worked properly (on my computer anyway). It was also an experiment again with the little DV miniture camera which I put on the turntable and let it record one full circuit which I thought you may find interesting. You also get a brief glimpse of "hollpoll" himself at the beginning. Anyway I hope you enjoy it.

Sam Hamman sold out to the Norwegians and it was all downhill for Wimbledon FC from there. Egil Olsen was appointed manager and introduced new playing systems such as zonal defence which the players didn't understand and didn't want to understand. The fierce never say die spirit of the club and players did die and by the time Terry Burton took over for the last two games the damage had been well and truly done. This was Egil's last game in charge and although Bradford's first goal (a penalty) was an appalling refereeing decision the overall result was probably the right one on the day. It was April 30th 2000 the beginning of the end of the "Dons' run in the Premiership which had seen some magnificent performances. I have to say it still hurts to watch this even after all this time

Hard to believe this concert took place 24 years ago. Amy Grant is nearing the zenith of her powers here culminating in her secular hit in 1991 "Baby,Baby" and Michael W.Smith has gone from strength to strength as well. Please don't use this clip as a debate about Amy Grants marriage and subsequent divorce, its old hat so get over it, I've put this up so people can enjoy the musical talents of those involved. While the British Rail system closes down for "engineering works" over Christmas and New year to make it as difficult as possible for the travelling public on my model railway the situation is completely different as freight and passenger services struggle to cope with the extra traffic ! Here's a selection of freight and passenger trains and a couple of Southern Region electric multiple units including the superb new Bachmann 4CEP and now Hornby are going to do the 4VEP ! Could there be some collusion here with Hornby possibly using a modified Bachmann tooling ?

In October 2006 four aussie steam railway enthusiasts went halfway round the world to the small country of Eritrea in Eastern Africa to experience the restored line between Asmara and Massawa. This first segment shows our hotel in Asmara and some shunting activites in Asmara yard. I will over a period of time be uploading all my video of this wonderful experience. Sorry about the wind noise I didn't have the microphone on my camera protected as did some of my colleages.

Eritrean Railway-Part One

The 14th May 1988 was Wimbledon FC's greatest day when they took on Liverpool the red hot favourites and beat them 1-0. Now twenty years later here's some memories of the lead up to the actual game. I have supported Wimbledon since 1961 and since its demise and move to Milton Keynes now support AFC Wimbledon playing in the Ryman Premier League.

We see a completely refurbished triang Southern EMU with ultrascale replacement wheels and gears on the Motor coach all the other coaches have had replacement bogies fitted and the whole unit has had a complete repaint. We also see a pristine Hornby glossy finish "Evening Star" 1971 vintage but almost as new from a deceased estate.

The revamped Hornby Dean Single "Lorna Doone" with two vintage coaches. Only 2000 of these were made by Hornby mine being number 1594. What a pity they didn't see fit to re engineer the tender wheels which are still the old course Triang ones. I replaced mine with some from an old Bachmann tender and whilst still not correct they are do run a lot better. Did Hornby expect only collectors to buy these ? The train is running on the Laura Gardens branch.

Model Railways-The Vintage Train

A montage of photos and rare archival film all taken at Folkestone Harbour, Folkestone Junction and along the famous warren during the 1930's,1940's and 1950's. My brother and myself all took holidays there during the period 1956-1962 with our parents and many happy hours were spent watching trains and the numerous cross channel ferries. All sadly no more and the last steam special made its way down to the harbour for the last time earlier this year 2008. Lets hope that any redevelopment of the area will be to the benefit of the many and not just the wealthy few.

This very heavily weathered Bachmann Crab 2-6-0arrived from the UK today the 14th December 2011 just in time for the Christmas traffic on the layout ! Just to round out the clip some other loco's and rolling stock are featured

When I came by a rake of Blue Golden Arrow coaches produced by Hornby in the seventies I couldn't resist putting the lovely blue rebuilt Merchant Navy class number 35005 at the head of the train. I was also very fortunate to acquire this particular loco as they are fairly scarce now. Of course the Golden Arrow never ran like this, the rebuilt version of this class has only been painted blue since preservation and the Blue pullmans would have had one of the Southern Regions powerful electric loco's pulling it in the seventies. Anyway I reckon it looks great so savour this short clip as this is the only time it will run like this !

6th May 2000 and more heartbreak after scoring first against Villa (an own goal) Michael Hughes suffers a broken leg and Villa race into a 2-1 lead. Injury time and big John Hartson heads an equaliser to send the crowd crazy ! Will it be enough to keep WImbledon in the Premier League ? Final part to follow

In this clip we see 34081 "92 Squadron" a (Hornby) Battle of Britain class 4-6-2 pacific in early British Railway lined malachite green livery with six lovely old Rosebud Kitmaster coaches in BR green. I have a special connection to this loco as in the mid 1970's I was treasurer of the 92 Squadron Battle of Britain Society which saved the loco from Barry scrap yard and ultimately restored the loco to full working order. If any of those early pioneers happen to see this clip I would love to hear from them ! (Mike Watts, Tony Missen, Ian Bowskill and Barrie Woods are a few of the names I remember)

My brief review of Hornby's modestly priced Railroad Range version of "Tornado". If the postal system between the UK and Australia wasn't so slow now this would have been uploaded sooner considering it was despatched as soon as it landed at Hattons !

Take a look at the heavy weathering on this Class 37 diesel as it hauls a consist of fuel tankers round the layout. We also see a class 24 on a coal train of empties. I have added some class 37 sound effects to enhance the clip.

October 2006 a sleepy town on the restored railway line between Asmara and Massawa in Eritrea is brought alive by the sound of the train making runpasts for the steam enthusiasts who have travelled from many parts of the world to experience the sights and sounds of the unique Eritrean experience. As young children frolic in the pool of water underneath the bridge (its the dry season) carrying the railway everybody is acutely aware as the engine whistles and starts its run at full speed across the bridge, everyone that is apart from two donkeys meandering on the line who can't make up their mind where they are going..........................

I recently joined the Hornby Collectors Club and was pleasantly surprised when a package arrived containing the delightful little 0-4-0 saddletank arrived. Sadly it didn't want to run at all and I was forced to dismantle it and repair a broken wire ! We also see a Hornby "terrier" pulling a train of weathered china clay wagons and just to round it off a little more main line action for you.

A typical Great Western Railway pickup freight train hauled by a Bachmann 2251 class 0-6-0 number 2277 which has been nicely weathered (not by me !) This is the first clip to be taken using a canon Ixus 75 digital camera.
