Shooting groups at 200 and 300 yards with a .223 Bushmaster Varminter AR15. Target cam also setup for picture-in-picture (PIP) effect. This cartridge has the potential to be VERY accurate for a factory round....I just needed a better benchrest for these shots, in particular at 300 yards. Nonetheless, you'll get an idea as to potential accuracy. Also popped some water jugs at end of the video; slow-motion included. What more can you ask for....AR15, long distance shooting, steel targets, water jugs, HD, picture in picture, slow-motion, etc. Viewable in 1920 x 1080 HD if you have the bandwidth. With the HD, you can clearly see the bullet trail on the 300 yard shots. This was a technically difficult video to put together, considering the use of two cameras at times (my first attempt at this), and the editing. The shot sequences are as well-merged as I can get down to 1/100th of a second. Obviously, at greater distances, there is a delay on the target confirmation, and rifle report from the target camera. Evaluation of the Hornady TAP 75 grain load for .223 Remington. Includes shooting groups on steel at a laser-measured 100 and 200 yards (showing scope perspective at 200), and water jug test at 100 yards. Platform is the AR15 Bushmaster Varminter with 24" barrel. Chronographed velocity from this rifle was 2780 fps, slightly lower than Hornady's published velocity (2790 fps and test barrel length not revealed)....but impressive for this bullet weight/caliber combination. Although it really isn't marketed as such, this load would probably perform well on coyotes and other large varmints. This is definitely one of my favorite "heavier" loads for .223 Remington.

Basic ballistic test for the relatively new but popular Hornady Critical Defense FTX in 9mm. This was tested in gallon jugs filled with wet newspaper, 4 layers of denim over the first jug. This is most definitely a light-recoiling, low-velocity cartridge when compared to the greatest majority of self-defense loads for law-abiding concealed carry. It could also be a good choice for those concerned about overpenetration. NOTE: As of late 2009/early 2010 here have been sporadic instances reported with hard primers in the 9mm Critical Defense, and also the .380 version. From what I can discern through various forum posts, this has been reported to Hornady.

Last Pork shoulder shoot for the year. I decided to do .22WMR to see how it could even compare to any form of 5.7x28mm ammunition, and you can see from the wound channels it doesn't. I wanted to pick something that's more or less designed around the shorter barrel .22WMR pistols. The new short barrel gold dots were out of stock, so I saw the Hornady Critical Defense and decided to pick it up. I will attach the velocity tests from this round but I averaged 1215 fps from this 6" barrel. The first shot entered the pork shoulder and penetrated a ways into, and did not exit. I think mainy because of the bone it ran into. I later found the bullet cutting up the shot #2 piece an inch or so in from the bone. The second shot penetrated the entire pork (9"), and the two water jugs behind it. recovered bullet was laying under the backside of the second jug. As you can see after cutting these sections open, the largest area of the wound channel is a mere 1.5". It's well known the .22WMR even out of a super short barrel can penetrate 12"+ and that can be seen here. I'm not sure if the round keyholded, or just disrupted and yawed on impact, but i got literally no expansion out of them. the top of the bullet slightly bent over and flattened out, but max diameter was .297". The gel pic Hornady shows on their site, kinda shows the round shoud mushroom, but even after testing them in a water jug, all three bullets behaved the same way. Again thanks everyone!
