Bob Hornett at Accordion Competition - Drover's Dream

At the 'Festival of St. Arnaud' there was an accordion competition. This was held at the local Senior Citizen's home. There were twelve contestants. Bob and Hector, for the first time, competed against each other!!! Bob was the only piano accordion player and did a fantastic job. There was a concertina player also. The rest were button accordions (melodeons). The tune set for all musicians was 'The Drover's Dream'. Each accordionist played this tune and then followed with a tune of their choice. The festival has been going many years but this was the first accordion competition. "Hector won this competition! It was awarded for best introduction of the song, playing and interpretation, creativity, etc. The prize was $100Aus and as a part of the prize, Hector had to go and play on the big stage at the town hall in St. Arnaud where there was a decent size audience and at the same time broadcasted live on national radio. Three tunes were played which where; Drover's Dream, Astrid Valse and Ernie Goodman's Waltz during an interview where Hector had to answer many questions from three members of the broadcasting crew. Friends and family were all tuned in that night. The day turned out very different to what was planned.... A memorable experience to say the least." November, 2009

1159. The Wreck of the Old 97 (Charles Noell) with Matthew Vaughan and Bob Hornett

This morning, Matthew Vaughan, from Canada via Bangkok, and accordionist, Bob Hornett, of bertosvids, dropped in accidentally while using the latest transportation technology to zap Matthew back to Thailand. Naturally we took the opportunity to do a few songs together. The wreck of Old 97 occurred when 33-year-old Joseph A. ("Steve") Broady, at the controls of engine number 1102, was operating the train at high speed in order to stay on schedule and arrive at Spencer on time on September 27, 1903. An extra fireman was assigned to help keep the steam at maximum pressure as the train was running an hour late. There were a number of danger points between Monroe and Spencer, but to make up time, Broady rapidly descended a heavy grade that ended at a bridge spanning Cherrystone Creek and, unable to decelerate sufficiently, the train derailed and plunged into the ravine below, killing nine people. Though they blamed Broady for the wreck, the Southern Railroad had a contract with US Mail which included substantial penalties for each minute the train was late into Spencer, so there was obviously pressure on the engineers to stay on time. The ballad, based on the song, "The Ship That Never Returned", was first recorded by Virginia musicians, GB Grayson and Henry Whittler, and then by Vernon Dalhart in 1924, the first million-selling country music release in the American record industry. It has since been recorded by several artists including Earl Flatt and Lester Scruggs, Woody ...

1164. Roddy McCorley (Ethna Carbery) - with Matthew Vaughan and Bob Hornett

Another of the four videos I made with Matthew and Bob when they were magically transported to my place on Matthew's last day in Australia. Matthew, a Canadian who works in Bangkok, has a popular YouTube channel based on the songbook "Rise Up Singing" and Bob is one of two accordionists from "bertosvids" channel, the other member being Hector Awol. Roddy McCorley was the son of a miller, and a local leader of the rebellion in Duneane, County Antrim. After the rebellion he went into hiding for almost a year but was betrayed, captured by British soldiers and court-martialled in Ballymena. He was executed on Good Friday 1799 in the town of Toomebridge, near the bridge of Toome, which had been partially destroyed by rebels in 1798 to prevent the arrival of reinforcements from west of the River Bann. His body was dissected by the British and buried under the road from Belfast to Derry. In the mid 1800s, he was dug up and given a proper burial in an unmarked grave. This well-known ballad was written by Ethna Carbery (1866-1902). It was given a new life during the folk music revival of the 1960's by The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, The Dubliners, The Kingston Trio and others. It has also been recorded by Shane MacGowan and The Popes (1995). You can see a playlist of my Irish songs here: www.youtube.com For lyrics and chords of my songs please see my website: www.raymondcrooke.com
