The laptop was overheating and shutting down, to the point of not being able to boot up. After my father started to fix it (he procured heat conducting grease, a replacement fan, and HP website directions, plus a hard drive upgrade) but gave it to me to finish taking apart and clean out the fan and heat sink. The replacement fan turned out to be the wrong size and wasn't necessary after all. New grease and cleaning out the fan assembly did the trick! Thanks Dad!

The only reasonable way to remove dust from your laptop is to take it apart and clean the fans and the heatsink from inside. When you vacuum clean your fans, make sure to stick something in them to keep the fan from spinning to speeds that could destroy it's bearings.
Now laptops can get dirty too, and I have a quick tip on how to clean them. Now when dirt, dust and hair get on the mother board, or inside the fan, this can cause your laptop to over heat, which can damage the components inside costing much more money than you want to spend. An unusual hot base, or hot air coming out of the outlets, or the computer just randomly shutting off, these are all signs of your laptop overheating. And, it's also a sign that it's time to clean your laptop. Now, if you're not computer hardware literate, then I would suggest just taking it to a professional and having them clean the inside components. Otherwise, listen up and I will tell you how to clean your laptop. First, you're gonna wanna unplug your laptop, and then take out the battery. Simply, just use a soft damp cloth to wipe the outside of your laptop. And if there are any spots that won't just come off with the cloth, I suggest using rubbing alcohol. Do not use any household cleaning products. I would use a cotton swab to clean any of the openings in the computer, or compressed air in a can, to get any dust, hair or dirt. Personally I prefer to use a laptop cleaning kit, which you can find at any store that sells computers. And this is because it tends to use less lint, and you can clean the outside and inside fairly quickly, and it doesn't leave any more spots. And once again, if you don't feel computer literate, just take it to a pro and let them deal with it because they're usually <b>...</b>
