Beloved Buffalo Bob Smith (birth name Richard Schmidt) gives pitch for Hostess Twinkies on an episode of HOWDY DOODY. Smith was an enormously talented musician and a popular radio personality before co-creating the HOWDY DOODY show, which combined puppets, music and a live-action cast. It soon became one of the highest-rated shows on on television and, perhaps, the most fondly remembered children's television show of the 1950s. So in demand was Smith that he appeared on additinal radio and television programs while continuing his five-day-a-week Doody duties. His heavy schedule resulted in a near fatal heart attack which kept him off the show for nearly a year, though a small television studio was constructed in his home's basement and he would often join the program by remote broadcast. After the show was cancelled in 1960, Smith was in semi-retirement until he began touring the college cicuit in the 1970s. This resurgence led to a revival of the HOWDY DOODY in the syndication market in 1976. Though much in the spirit and fiormat of the original series, one of television's most iconic figures of the 1950s found the television market had changed substantially in the 1970s and the show was cancelled after one season. The idea for Howdy Doody began on the NBC New York radio affiliate WEAF in 1947 with a program called The Triple B Ranch. The three Bs stood for Big Brother Bob Smith, who developed the country bumpkin voice of a ranch hand and greeted the radio audience with, "Oh, ho, ho, howdy doody." Martin Stone, Smith's agent, suggested putting Howdy on television and presented the idea to NBC televi-sion programming head Warren Wade. With Stone and Roger Muir as producers, Smith launched Puppet Playhouse on 17 December 1947. Within a week the name of the program was changed to The Howdy Doody Show. Children loved the Doodyville inhabitants, because they were a skillfully created, diverse collection of American icons. The original Howdy marionette was designed by Frank Paris and in keeping with Smith's voice was a country bumpkin; however, in a dispute over licensing rights Paris left the show with the puppet. Seek & Destroy" is the ninth track on the album. The song has been frequently played in concerts over the years since its live debut in 1982 and has been Metallica's closing song since the Madly in Anger with the World Tour. During the documentary film about Metallica, Some Kind of Monster, the song is used when footage of the band down the years is shown highlighting the progression in the band's appearance and sound over time. Also in the documentary the song was often used in the auditions for Newsted's replacement. In the book Metallica: This Monster Lives one of the film's directors said how initially they wanted to alter the footage so it flowed smoothly but soon noticed the value of showing the alteration in the band in each piece of footage. This was also the theme song of former WCW and current TNA wrestler Sting and AAA wrestler Cibernetico. In Sting's case, the song was a live recording from Woodstock '99 which would be included on the 1999 compilation WCW Mayhem: The Music. New York Mets pitcher John Maine takes the mound to "Seek & Destroy." Also, the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League also use the song as their entrance theme during home games. "Seek & Destroy" was covered by Chuck Billy, Jake E. Lee, Jimmy Bain, and Aynsley Dunbar for the album Metallic Assault: A Tribute to Metallica. [From "Kovacs Corner" on YouTube.com] - Here Kovacs spoofs the grand daddy of all children's programming, "The Howdy Doody Show". Instead of Buffalo Bob Smith, we have Buffalo Miklos Molnar hosting the show, which also includes his on camera commercial plugs for his "Miklos Bor". (For those of you who are not aware, "bor" is Hungarian wine). Again, the stagehand's laughter clues us into the inside prank of spiking Ernie's bottle of "bor" with something along the lines of hard whiskey. The Clarabelle-type clown character is none other than Kovacs' and NBC staff announcer Bill Wendell. Bill later became the first studio announcer for "Late Night with David Letterman" and followed him to his current CBS gig before retiring in 1995. He passed away April 14, 1999. Kovacs takes dead aim at the early to mid 20th Century characterization of the eastern European immigrant type of personality. Their humor at that time was much less sophisticated and much more simple then that of the American norm, and their thinking processes and problem resolution skills were sometimes brutal and to the point. The Howdy Deedy puppet in this clip can attest to that! It has been suggested on other Kovacs web sites that Miklos is Ernie's loving spoof of his father Andrew. The voiceover for Howdy in this clip happens to be the late voice artist Dayton Allen, who was the voice of the character "Double Doody" in the orginal series. Roger Muir and telecast on NBC in the United States from 1947 until 1960. It was a pioneer in children's television programming and set the pattern for many similar shows. It was also a pioneer in early color production as NBC (at the time owned by TV maker RCA) used the show in part to sell color television sets in the 1950s. Howdy Doody himself is a freckle-faced boy marionette with 48 freckles, one for each state of the union (up until January 3, 1959 when Alaska was admitted as the 49th state), and was originally voiced by Buffalo Bob Smith. The Howdy Doody show's various marionettes were created and built by puppeteers Velma Wayne Dawson, Scott Brinker (the show's prop man) and Rufus Rose throughout the show's run. The redheaded Howdy marionette on the original show was operated with 11 strings: two heads, one mouth, one eye, two shoulders, one back, two hands and two knees. Three strings were added when the show returned—two elbows and one nose. The original Howdy Doody marionette now resides at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
