How to design like an architect

howtoarchitect.com www.powhow.com Learn with Doug via LIVE Webcam Classes at Powhow.com! Hi, Im Doug Patt and this is How to design like an architect. I thought the best way to talk about design would be to create a dream home for someone, but first, lets talk about the design process. An architect, like any design professional draws on a wellspring of information. How we design is based to some extent on what we know. What we know can be based on the school we went to, the books weve read, the magazines we like to look at, where we grew up, our friends and relatives, the occupations weve held and in general, our life experiences. A professor named Edmund Bacon (actually the father of the actor Kevin Bacon) told me something once that I will never forget. He said, Its in the doing that the idea comes. That is, we must sit and work through something before we can find the best way to solve a problem. Solving a design problem is essentially taking what we know and putting it together with that particular challenge. When an architect sits down to problem solve they frequently sketch. Sketching is one of the best ways to work out the solution to a problem. And I believe that its exactly what Edmund Bacon meant when he said its in the doing that the idea comes. Before we design our dream home I need to give you a little insight into one of my favorite architects. Le Corbusier (October 6, 1887 August 27, 1965) was a Swiss born architect, writer and painter among other things ...

So you want to be an architect - Part 2

howtoarchitect.com www.powhow.com Learn with Doug via LIVE Webcam Classes at Powhow.com! Hi. My name is Doug Patt. And this is So You want to be an Architect? A seven part series exploring the architect. This is lesson two. What does an architect make? On the surface this sounds like a dumb question. An architect makes buildings. But if you look below the surface youll see that the answer is much more meaningful. Ralph Waldo Emerson (who lived from 1803 1882), was a well-known writer, philosopher and poet. He said of Greek architecture, it is the flowering of geometry. Translated, Emerson was referring to the Greek architects elaboration and mastery of shape and form. Anne Louise Germaine de Stael (who lived from 1766 1817) is a little known Swiss author who lived in Paris and abroad. She is quoted as saying architecture is frozen music. In simple terms her comment means that architects make a kind of static harmony of sound. Philip Schaff (who lived from 1819 1893) was a Swiss born, Protestant theologian. He said, architecture is a handmaid of devotion, a beautiful church is a sermon in stone. Elaborating a bit on Shaffs comment we can imply that architecture, like a sermon, is also a kind of message or story. And finally John Ruskin an author, poet and artist (who lived from 1819 1900) said of architecture that the mere sight of it, may contribute to (his) mental health, power and pleasure. In other words architecture is an Inspiration. So, lets move beyond the ...

How to design a bridge house

howtoarchitect.com Welcome to design a dwelling - volume 2. Im Doug Patt. This is the series where we pick a site and put a house on it. Other than a medieval anomaly or a draw bridge with a small structure for operation its not very likely youll see a house built on a bridge any time soon. With that in mind this bridge site at the Grand Canyon is perfect for a house. Any building placed on this structure would be able to take advantage of the thrilling view and if designed properly the vista would be completely unobstructed. So, I did some thinking about the building and I like the analogy of creating a home that is something like a cork to a wine bottle. In simple terms just as a cork is round and fits the round neck of a bottle, the house would be rectangular, fitting the rectangular cut out shape of the structure. As noted in previous episodes, Im always more inclined to go modern and this site lends itself to that aesthetic. To get an idea of how big this house is going to be we can gauge the scale of the photo from the people on the bridge. The first design I completed followed my original sketch fairly closely. The configuration stayed pretty true the idea of a rectangular shape with simple cut outs and geometrical forms for openings and windows. However, the design fails to take any real advantage the most important factor of the site has to offer, the view. Now remember, This exercise is simply to describe what an architect might be thinking about in a schematic ...

How to write like an architect

howtoarchitect.com www.powhow.com Learn with Doug via LIVE Webcam Classes at Powhow.com! Hi Im Doug Patt and this is how to architect. Today well learn How to write like an architect. The basic drafting tool for an architect when working by hand is a parallel rule. You can also use a t-square. Ill be using an ames lettering guide to create the lines for the lettering. First were going to create our horizontal lines using the lettering guide. The guide has a variety of spacing options to create just about any combination your looking for. I will also be using a small triangle. Ive added tape to this one for ink lettering to avoid smearing. Ill also be using a .5mm pentel drafting pencil and a paper mate, flair pen for the letters. Ive created a small grid here to give me some guidance when I lay out the letters. Id say the most important thing to remember about hand lettering is that your letters need to seem animated while still appearing orderly and neat. I think this is achieved by using a few conventions. For example, youll notice the letters have some amount of incompleteness. The second diagonal on the A does not follow all the way to the guide line, the bottom of the B or D isnt complete, The bottom line on the E starts in front of the vertical. The second thing is that all the horizontals in the letters are drawn by hand, not using the parallel rule. They all sit at a slight angle making them dynamic and yet uniform. Youll also notice that I use the ruler for all ...

Fallingwater

howtoarchitect.com www.powhow.com Learn with Doug via LIVE Webcam Classes at Powhow.com! Welcome to how to architect. This is Great Buildings. A series about Great Buildings and their architects. Im Doug Patt. This is perhaps one of the most famous homes in the world created by an equally famous architect. Fallingwater also known as the Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr. Residence is a home located in Bear Run Pennsylvania and was completed in 1937. It was designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The home served as a weekend retreat for the Kaufman family until 1963 when it was donated to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. This home and its architect are well know for a multitude of reasons, one of which is the incredibly way Wright was able to conceive and carry out a design that so perfectly integrates into its landscape. The building sits above an active waterfall and cantilevers itself in all directions, much like the stone and landscape of a natural waterfall. Its materials, forms and colors integrate visually and yet set them apart enough to amplify the existing surrounds and waterfall. Unbelievably, the original design was sketched just before Wrights meeting with the Mr. Kaufman. Construction was also fraught with many challenges regarding the structural integrity of the cantilevered porches and Wrights desire for simplicity and unencumbered construction. In the end the house serves as a lasting example to the architects incredible vision and the ability to integrate ...

How to cut (X-acto) like an architect

howtoarchitect.com www.powhow.com Learn with Doug via LIVE Webcam Classes at Powhow.com! Hi. Im Doug Patt and today were going to learn how to cut like an architect. Cutting materials by hand is still a part of the education and practice of an architect. These are some pointers about how to do so well. Remember, these are rules of thumb youre responsible for how you chose to use them. This is a cutting mat. I use one. I wont cut on the vinyl cover Ive got on my drafting table or on the wood table itself. Ive seen people do it for years and Its dumb. It will eventually screw up the surface of your drawing desk and mess with your line quality when your pencil hits the divots you created with knife. Now, these cutting mats come in many sizes. This one is 18x24. Ive been using it since college. ItIt tucks away nicely and its the right size for most detailed work. These are the xacto tools I use. I like this one because its easy to handle and good for cutting small parts. And this one is a little more industrial, but I like it for just about any job. They come in tons of shapes, sizes and materials its your choice. I keep my blades turned over or pushed down when Im not using them. This is no joke, these blades are sharp and will mess you up. Ive got the scars to prove it. Now about straightedges or ruler. I never use plastic or wood. When your cutting along these materials the knife edge can cut into them because theyre soft and destroy the edge or ricoche off and cut you ...

Philip Johnson Ball Residence New Canaan, CT

howtoarchitect.com www.powhow.com Learn with Doug via LIVE Webcam Classes at Powhow.com! Philip Johnson designed a house for Alice Ball in New Canaan, Connecticut in 1953. The Ball Residence is historically significant because it was built immediately following the completion of the Philip Johnson's Glass House. Johnson was friends with a number of notable artists and architect's like Andy Warhol, Mark Rothko, Jasper Johns, Donald Judd, and in particular Mies Van Der Rohe who's considered one of the fathers of modern architecture. Van Der Rohe had a profound effect on Johnson's work. The Ball residence is an example of where that influence is apparent. The residence is rational, minimal and looks to some of Van Der Rohe's sensibilities in its clarity. The building sits on a 2.2 acre, partially wooded lot on the most coveted street in New Canaan - Oenoke Ridge Rd. The landscape and interiors blend beautifully as the division between exterior space and interior is obscured through areas of glass. The spaces are vibrant and delicately detailed. The property can be used as a home, corporate retreat, show house, or backdrop for still photo shoots and motion picture imagery. The buildings elegant detailing is unparalleled for displaying modern products. It's perfect for corporate public relations and philanthropy events or as a historical museum. So you want to be an architect - Part 4

howtoarchitect.com www.powhow.com Learn with Doug via LIVE Webcam Classes at Powhow.com! Hi. I'm Doug Patt and this is So you want to be an architect, Part 4. What does an architect use? Aside from the wide variety of items an architect uses to physically create the drawings, specifications, models, and paperwork necessary to make buildings the architect uses elements of style to create buildings. Narrowed from a gamut of items I believe you could say the elements of style, when it comes to buildings are scale, form, complexity, and material. Lets look at examples of each. Much has been made throughout the history of art and architecture over proportion from DaVincis canon of proportions to Le Corbusiers modular man. How buildings reflect & accommodate human scale is a key component of architects work. From the beginning architects like Palladio used ratio and proportion found in nature to create harmonious buildings. From Frank Lloyd Wrights cozy interiors to the grand palace of Versailles. to the Hancock skyscraper of Boston who's scale overwhelms the famous trinity church but was designed to reflect it's beauty nonetheless building can be scaled to the human figure or scaled in a more ambiguous manner. Ambiguity is key for Jean Nouvels Arab world institute where the elements of the elevation make scale extraordinarily vague. So scale is one way architects relate a building to the user. In the last few decades architecture has increasingly been able to take advantage of ...
