Bend your knees and put your hands on your hips. Tip: Dance on a comfortable surface; the hula is always done barefoot. Step 2: Use this four-beat pattern for your feet. First, step eight inches to the right with your right foot. Second, bring your left foot toward your right without sliding it. Third, step with your right foot again, and fourth, bring your left foot toward your right, tapping the ground on the fourth beat. Switch directions, leading with the left foot. Step 3: Now bring your hips into the four-beat mix. As you step to the right, lower your foot toe-heel and lift your hip; repeat with your left foot and hip. After practicing getting the throw right, this was about our 6th try. We thought we would be there for hours and were shocked to do it so quickly. The Hula Hoop belongs to a flatmate and this was our first hula stunt, but it's coming on all our summer travels now. Story By 3 News in New Zealand: "Hennik Hassett woke up this morning to a pleasant surprise. His latest YouTube video, the result of mucking around with mates at a Tairua bach on a Friday afternoon, has over 15000 views and 100 comments. "It's pretty funny seeing all the comments," says Mr Hassett. "On my morning tea break I went and looked at my Gmail and there was so many comments I couldn't get through them all before I went back to work." The video's premise is easy to grasp -- dreadlocked Kiwi blokes jump through a hoop on the front lawn of their bach. So simple a dog could do it right? But their trick involves four guys and a backspinning hoop, in an entirely unplanned stunt. "We went down early on the Friday and we were just killing time on the lawn," says Mr Hassett. "It's my flatmate's [hoop] so she was meeting us down there so we took it down, not specifically to make that video." Biography by Steve Huey Along with fellow founders D'Angelo and Erykah Badu, Maxwell was enormously important in defining and shaping the neo-soul movement that rose to prominence over the latter half of the '90s. Drawing his greatest inspiration from the concept of the R&B auteur (looking to artists like Prince, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, etc.), Maxwell recorded some of the most ambitious R&B of his time, becoming wildly popular and often earning critical raves in the process. What was more, his recurring theme of romantic monogamy set him apart from the vast majority of his bump'n'grind lover-man contemporaries. Maxwell was born May 23, 1973, in Brooklyn, NY; he adopted his middle name as his stage moniker, keeping his real identity a closely guarded secret out of concern for his family's privacy. Born of Puerto Rican and black Caribbean stock, Maxwell suffered the loss of his father (in a plane crash) when he was just three years old. The experience made him a deeply religious child, and he first began singing in his Baptist church. Still, he didn't really get serious about music until age 17, when he began writing his own songs using a cheap Casio keyboard given to him by a friend.
