BEOWULF: Hurdy-Gurdy & Theremin
This is a short excerpt from the 8th century epic tale of BEOWULF. The instrument I am using to accompany myself is called a hurdy-gurdy , a popular instrument of medieval Europe. The hurdy-gurdy in this video was made for me by Alden and Cali Hackmann of Olympic Musical Instruments in Indianola, Washington, and is a fully equipped electro-acoustic instrument with a built-in sound console. Hurdy-gurdy players, like bagpipe players, cannot control the volume of their instruments which makes it difficult to use for accompanying the human voice but the intensity and sheer volume of the instrument also made it ideal for great halls and public places in ancient times. One advantage that it has is that it is a complete instrument, able to play melody, harmony and rhythm. The hurdy-gurdy in this video is plugged into an RSP Technologies Intelliverb processor which I control with a MIDI Ground Control foot switch. The only other instrument used in this video is a Moog Ethervox theremin. The original Beowulf epic was written in Old English which is no longer spoken and cannot be understood by English speakers today. I used a modern adaptation of the words for this video. For anyone who is interested, I have posted the text to my website, along with some closeup photos of the hurdy-gurdy. Artist: Hurdy Gurdy (Claus Böhling, Jens Marqvard Otzen, Torben Forne) Album: Hurdy Gurdy (released in 1971) Song: Peaceful Open Space The Danish trio (originally called the Boom Boom Brothers) began as Hurdy Gurdy during a London performance in 1968. Their first and only album recorded in 1971, is considered one of the top 10 Danish rock LPs of all time. The furious guitar playing of Claus Bohling is definitely the band's secret weapon, deftly maneuvering through heavy progressive, blues and jazz. Hurdy Gurdy are not mere 'sound-alikes', actually their sound is rather unique, particularly in the Eastern-influenced sitar-heavy tracks. Donovan - "Hurdy Gurdy Man" (1968)
"Hurdy Gurdy Man" is a song by the Scottish musician Donovan. It was written and recorded in early 1968 and released in May as a single and gave name to the album The Hurdy Gurdy Man, which was released in October of that year. It was late speculated that the song may have also been written about one of Donovan's former colleague, a teenage girl named Dale Hynes. It reached #5 in the US and #4 in the UK pop charts. The song was written for Donovan's old friend and guitar mentor Mac MacLeod. MacLeod was in a Danish band at the time called Hurdy Gurdy. The song features a harder rock sound than Donovan's usual material. It also features an Indian influence with the use of a tambura in it. In the booklet that came with Donovan's 1992 double CD, Troubadour: The Definitive Collection 1964-1976, Allan Holdsworth and Jimmy Page are listed as the electric guitar players and John Bonham and Clem Cattini as drummers on the recording. However, according to John Paul Jones, who arranged and played bass on the track (and also booked the session musicians), Clem Cattini played the drums and Alan Parker played the electric guitar. The song was an anthem for free-spirited hippies at the time due to its psychedelic sound. chart positions were #4 UK Singles Chart; #5 Billboard Pop Singles (US); #3 Cash Box (US) John Paul Jones, who later became a member of Led Zeppelin, was the musical director for the session.
