Shakespeare's "Macbeth" (Ian McKellen) "Tomorrow and Tomo...

Ian McKellen "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow " from the 1979 TV version of the Trevor Nunn production by the Royal Shakespeare Company G. Fletcher ("Studies of Shakespeare", 1847): There is no want of physical courage implied in Macbeth's declining the combat with Macduff. He may well believe that now, more than ever, it is time to 'beware Macduff'. He is at length convinced that 'fate and metaphysical aid' are against him; and, consistent to the last in his hardened and whining selfishness, no thought of the intense blackness of his own perfidy interferes to prevent him from complaining of falsehood in those evil beings from whose very nature he should have expected nothing else. There is no cowardice, we say, in his declining the combat under such a conviction. Neither is there any courage in his renewing it; for there is no room for courage in opposing evident fate. Bu the last word and action of Macbeth are an expression of the moral cowardice which we trace so conspicuously throughout his career; he surrenders his life that he may not be 'baited with the rabble's curse'.

Ian Mckellen In 'Richard III'--"Now Is The Winter Of Our.."

Shakespeare's 'Now is the winter of our discontent' soliloquy performed by Ian McKellen in his film version of 'Richard III' from 1995. ---tho with the long introduction in this modernized version, the soliloquy actually starts about 5 and a half minutes into this clip. I really like the re-created 30s style jazz tune here, but for those who want just THE SPEECH, go here: www.youtube.com Stacey Kent (born 1968 in New Jersey) is the fine jazz singer in this clip (and in real life!). Excellent music by Trevor Jones for this film. Christopher Marlowe. 1564--93 The Passionate Shepherd to His Love COME live with me and be my Love, And we will all the pleasures prove That hills and valleys, dales and fields, Or woods or steepy mountain yields. And we will sit upon the rocks, And see the shepherds feed their flocks By shallow rivers, to whose falls Melodious birds sing madrigals. And I will make thee beds of roses And a thousand fragrant posies; A cap of flowers, and a kirtle Embroider'd all with leaves of myrtle. A gown made of the finest wool Which from our pretty lambs we pull; Fair-linèd slippers for the cold, With buckles of the purest gold. A belt of straw and ivy-buds With coral clasps and amber studs: And if these pleasures may thee move, Come live with me and be my Love. The shepherd swains shall dance and sing For thy delight each May morning: If these delights thy mind may move, Then live with me and be my Love. Arthur Quiller-Couch, ed. 1919. Sir Ian McKellen's Lost British Television Debut from 1964 is Found!

www.findaclip.co.uk . Sir Ian McKellen, better known as Gandalf from The Hobbit is currently filming in New Zealand whereas here in dear old blighty, we've just rediscovered his very first television appearance. The master tapes of The Indian Stories of Rudyard Kipling were broadcast just once in 1964 and then swiftly wiped by the BBC, possibly around 1965-1966, if not earlier. It was thought that this programme was lost forever. Fortunately, a film recording of the master tape was discovered in the private collection of an Illinois historical society and was recovered by a financial consortium consisting of Steve Birt, Kaleidoscope and the Tim Disney Archive. Needless to say, the programme will be loaned to the BBC for digital preservation in their archives, after which the master print will continue to reside safely at the TDA's archive facility in Nottingham. Another programme that was missing, believed wiped forever, is safely returned to these shores. Enjoy the clip! Richard III - Act I / Scene I

Richard, the future king, opens his play not by protesting his discontent, but by celebrating an upturn in his family's fortunes. His brother Edward IV—they're sons of the Duke of York—has wrested the English crown from Henry VI and the Lancastrian house. So those who simply quote "Now is the winter of our discontent" are doing these lines a disservice, since the "now" actually modifies "made glorious" (ie "The winter is now made glorious summer"). To translate more loosely: "The oppression of our family, which made life like a long winter, has been turned to a summery contentedness now that my brother is king." Edward's emblem is the sun, and the radiance of his glory has dispelled the clouds that "lowered" (frowned) on the House of York. Richard's string of metaphors runs adrift, though, when he begins talking about burying clouds in the ocean. But lest we get the idea that Richard couldn't be happier with the current state of affairs, he quickly begins grousing about Edward's decadent ways now that he's king. And from there he moves on to brooding over his own deformity—Richard was born hunchbacked and disfigured. In many respects, it's still winter for the restless Richard, who himself has ambitions for the throne. He attempts to bring on his own summer through manipulation, treachery, and murder, and, for a short time, he succeeds.

Ian Mckellen in 'Richard III'-Lady Anne mourns, gets wooed

McKellen delights in showing Richard's humor and arrogance as he dances off at the end of this scene to the jazz music of the first. What Is Worth Dying For... Is Worth Killing For. Kristin Scott Thomas ... Lady Anne from an interview with Sir Ian McKellen: ---You're not suggesting that the audience should have sympathy for him?--- I'm not suggesting that they do anything, but if they don't I'd be very disappointed. He's very engaging. I think they will catch their breath, hopefully, at his bravado. I hope at times that they will be so convinced by his acting that they will forget what he's up to, which is why he has to keep reminding the audience. "You know what I've just done..." I hope they're going to see not just one person all the way through. They're going to see the different facets of this man's ability and his potential which he channels to absolutely the wrong purposes; but he is undoubtedly an attractive figure and that's why Lady Anne is momentarily seduced by him. ---Yes. I find that rather hard to believe.--- You find it hard to believe on the stage but you won't when you see it on the screen. The reasons are many, but one is Richard's overwhelming force; the other is her own heightened emotion, she's at a very vulnerable state emotionally. She's exhausted with grief. She cannot keep it up even faced with a man who legitimately killed her husband in battle. She is totally destitute at the point when she was about to become First Lady, Queen of England. Ian McKellen & Andy Serkis Back For The Hobbit

Twitter.com - Follow Us! The hobbit is about to start filming, but what about Gandalf and Gollum? Find out after the Break! Hey Everyone I'm Chelsea Cannell and your watching Clevver Movies! The hobbit films are going into production next month but there were still a few IMPORTANT names who still haven't signed on for the 2 part project!!! Really disturbing, yet Thankfully for fans of the franchise, Both Sir Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis have finalllllly made their commitments! You know that whole, good things come to those who wait? Well they definitely made us wait but it's gonna be GOOOD! Sir Ian, of course, will be reprising his roll as the wizrd Gandalf, which is a real relief because believe it or not, according to his blog, he was actually thinking about not coming back! We all know actors like a challenge, and according to his website, McKellen had to think long and hard about taking the part, saying" I kept wondering... was Gandalf what I most wanted to do, more than a new play for instance or indeed a new part? Sequels aren't necessarily as rewarding to act in as their originals!" Thankfully though, he has decided to sign on...good news huh! Also recently adding his name to the pot, "We wants it, we needs it. Must have the precious!" Though it hasn't been "officially" confirmed by anyone in his camp, Word it Andy Serkis has signed on the dotted line to return as Gollum, Gollum! Phew that was close, Can you even imagine the Hobbit without Ian and Andy as Gandolf <b>...</b>
