A Computer Called Watson: IBM's David Ferrucci with Richard Waters

This is an episode of REVOLUTIONARIES, a co-production of the Computer History Museum and KQED television, sponsored by Intel. Recorded: Nov 15, 2011, originally broadcast on February 25, 2012. In an historic event in February 2011, IBM's Watson computer competed on Jeopardy! against the TV quiz show's two biggest all-time champions. Watson is a computer running software called Deep QA, developed by IBM Research. While the grand challenge driving the project was to win on Jeopardy!, the broader goal of Watson was to create a new generation of technology that can find answers in unstructured data more effectively than standard search technology. Computer systems that can directly and accurately answer peoples' questions over a broad domain of human knowledge have been envisioned by scientists and writers since the advent of computers themselves. Open domain question answering holds tremendous promise for facilitating informed decision making over vast volumes of natural language content. Applications in business intelligence, healthcare, customer support, enterprise knowledge management, social computing, science and government could all benefit from computer systems capable of deeper language understanding. The DeepQA project is aimed at exploring how advancing and integrating Natural Language Processing (NLP), Information Retrieval (IR), Machine Learning (ML), Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KR&R) and massively parallel computation can greatly advance the science ...

IBM Watson and the Future of Healthcare

IBM and University of Kansas Medical Center will host a healthcare forum with Dr. David Ferrucci, IBM Chief Scientist of IBM's Watson Computing System. Monday, May 16th 12:00 -- 2:00 pm G013 School of Nursing Auditorium Jeffrey Orndoff, Administrator, Kansas University Physicians Inc. Dr Ferrucci led a team of 25 IBM Scientists in building a computing system, named after IBM founder Thomas J. Watson, that rivals a human's ability to answer questions posed in natural language with speed, accuracy and confidence. The Watson system recently competed on Jeopardy! against the show's two most successful and celebrated contestants -- Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. Watson won this first-ever man vs. machine Jeopardy! competition. However the victory is for man and the ability to apply this new technology to solve problems and drive progress in various fields. One of the first applications of Watson is likely to be in Healthcare where this technology can help Doctors quickly and accurately diagnose patients. Watson's ability to analyze the meaning and context of human language, and quickly process information to find precise answers can assist decision makers, such as physicians and nurses, unlock important knowledge and facts buried within huge volumes of information, and offer answers they may not have considered to help validate their own ideas or hypotheses. IBM's Watson Starting Gig on Wall Street

Transcript by www.newsy.com BY DAVID EARL IBM's game show winning super computer hasn't had any problems in the job market. His latest gig? Wall Street. Bloomberg has the headline. "His title is best summed up as financial services advisor ... I know that traders down there complain about algorithm and high frequency trading..." Complaints no more from traders at CitiGroup. The bank hired Watson for his first foray into financial services. What does the big bank expect to get from the trivia whiz? The Toronto Star says the bank will use Watson to... "...take-in everything from information about customers' profiles and banking activities to corporate quarterly reports, analyst reports, regulations, credit ratings, government securities filings and the institution's own rules. It could also gather intelligence from online news reports, blogs, and Twitter feeds." It turns out the big bank has a long history with IBM. TechWeek Europe quotes a Citi press release... "In 1954, the two companies announced the first use of an 'electronic brain' that reduced the time required for a cost-benefit analysis from 1000 man-hours to nine and a half minutes." But is Watson, a kind of nerdy character, going to fit in on the Street? Noreen Malone from New York Magazine thinks he'll be just fine. "Sure, at first he'll probably still spend his weekends gaming or whatever. But soon he'll be getting drinks on a Friday at Joshua Tree... He'll be buying Knicks tickets and bottles at Dream. He'll ...
